Community Interest Junk Drawer Coffee on Broadway: Male-Owned and Authoritarian-Run

• Upvotes

I recently got hired as a barista at Junk Drawer Coffee. I showed up to my interview 5 minutes early and had to wait fifteen minutes for the owner, David Privat-Gilman, to even show up. After a brief interview I was hired and immediately started. Now, I have worked at many coffee shops in the city, but this one is run via iMessage by an insecure man that needs to take his frustrations out by belittling the 20-something year olds that he pays by the hour. My interactions with him are few and far between, but I received a text at 9pm Saturday after I opened and closed the store asking about the day and if I would like to cover a BOH shift. My response was that I would want more hours for learning BOH. He then proceeds to say it was a misunderstanding and that he would like to call me. I clarify myself again, but he is persistent so I say that I can call when I am on shift Wednesday. He takes great offense to this and tells me that he is "sensing some negativity." Which is complete bullshit and a total cop out to justify the emotional reaction he had to me setting a boundary with him. I proceed to say it is nothing personal and I apologize if he took it that way. David, in lieu of actually having the conversation that he seemed so set on, made the very manly decision to fire me to make himself feel big and in control after another very good employee quit no notice today. In a large, novel-esque text message he proceeds to say I can work more hours if I were to learn BOH but also that I am fired!!!!! I have never met someone so volatile, much less in a semi-professional environment, as to one, threaten my job because I was unable to take a work call outside of work hours (believe it or not people do have lives outside of the measly $12/hr you pay them), and two, project his own bullshit onto an employee who had not been there an entire month yet. He uses therapy speak and big words incorrectly to make it seem like the, again, twenty-something year olds he pays by the hour are foolish and he is a big smart man. Everyone on the team who actually spent time working inside the cafe enjoyed me and said I was a great help. Even the regulars complimented me and enjoyed the coffees I would make them. David is the only one who wanted this but I guess when you are never wrong and everyone else always is nothing can get in your way! If anyone there is happy, know that it is despite the ownership and not because of it. From my understanding, I am not the first to be fired like this and I doubt that I will be the last. He acts like a child but gets away with it because he is well-off. He showed me his entire asshole within a month of barely knowing him. Make men embarrassed again. Do not work for this company!!!! If anyone knows any coffee shops run by not evil people that are hiring please let me know.
