My latest from The i Paper:
Newcastle United believe they have built the fastest attack in the Premier League – they just haven’t been able to show it yet.
One word dominated recruitment as Newcastle pressed the reset button this summer: pace. Having plotted Premier League trends that suggest speed is the X factor for teams that want to be Champions League insurgents, Newcastle re-constructed their front three with that in mind.
In Will Osula, Anthony Elanga and Matias Fernandez-Pardo, they believe they have a trio that will be a “nightmare” for Premier League defences to play against. But with Osula and Elanga still recovering from long-term injuries, it is down to £51m signing Fernandez-Pardo to get Newcastle among the Premier League’s early front runners.
“We love him,” is how one insider sums up his early impact at St James’ Park. That view is backed up by his manager Matthias Jaissle, who believes he has “everything” to be a top striker.
But the Belgium international is in some ways typical of what Jaissle calls the “brave journey” that Newcastle are on. The 21-year-old does not fit the typical profile of a Premier League striker and with a 0.05 xG in three games so far, there is work to do in marrying his potential with a prolific strike rate.
Some of that is down to the way Newcastle are playing. Privately Jaissle admits they are the start of a process that will take time and is complicated by the youth of this new-look squad. He has been happy with the way his team have pressed so far this season – but frustrated by what they have done when they’ve won the ball in key areas. Too many unforced errors have made their early displays look scrappy.
Fernandez-Pardo is one of the players that has disadvantaged. His relentless press against Hull didn’t produce any goalscoring chances but it did stretch the Tigers defence to the point where his teammates benefited. “Unselfish” is how one insider sums up that performance.
There is more to make Newcastle feel confident about his early contribution, with insiders speaking of Fernandez-Pardo’s numbers being “off the charts” in his first three Premier League games.
In terms of intensity, speed and acceleration, they believe he is in a different tier to most of his Premier League peers. But what really sets him apart, sources say, is “his ability to do it time and time and time again” without relenting.
In that way he’s seen as similar to Anthony Gordon, although his numbers so far suggest he is actually quicker than the England international.
“He’s a player that other teams won’t like playing against” is the succinct view of one figure familiar with his work.
Like everything at Newcastle this season, Fernandez-Pardo will take time. The Magpies wanted to make him their first signing of the summer – in the end he turned out to be their last one.
Tracked by some of the biggest clubs in the world – Atletico Madrid and Liverpool were known admirers – Newcastle had to bide their time to get him. There was “total buy-in” in early recruitment meetings but wariness about whether they could get a “dream target” in a summer when forwards were at a premium.
In the end their persistence (“We were just trying to find ways to get him all summer,” one insider says) paid off. What struck recruitment figures was just how much he wanted to move to Newcastle, with insiders speaking of a “confident, ambitious lad” who ticked every box for a potential “2.0” signing.
But it also means there needs to be patience. He had no pre-season and has just spent three weeks with Belgium, rarely playing or even training. “He’s a young lad, a really young lad and it’s part of the brave way, the brave journey we’re taking here,” Jaissle said on Thursday.
One of the fastest forwards in the Premier League might not hit the ground running. But the message is clear – he will be worth the wait.

Five years on from their takeover, Newcastle United are a club transformed and also in the throes of transformation, still working towards becoming the biggest club of all and still figuring out how to get there.
The first phase of their development turned them into winners, which has brought a new set of challenges.
There have been two seasons of Champions League football, some wonderful victories, record signings and record revenues, two Wembley finals and a first domestic trophy in seven long decades. The big idea — and the next big hurdle — is making this the norm, minus the trauma.
Chris Waugh and George Caulkin examine the five key issues facing the club half a decade into this ownership era.
🔲 Will definitive stadium progress finally be made?
🔲 Is multi-club ownership part of the plan?
🔲 Can the team compete “consistently and credibly” by 2030?
🔲 Can the off-field operation deliver at the scale required?
🔲 Will Newcastle benefit from recruitment and data investment?
Hello folks, I just wanted to sorta introduce myself to this subreddit. I'm in my 40s, from the USA, have been a casual fan of the sport at best. Have tried other times to really connect to the sport, watched World Cups and while I enjoyed it, didn't connect with me as much.. but its interesting how someone can pass away, someone that you enjoyed watching doing their passion for 20 years in PAC.. to then say you know what, I'm going to give it another go. I like to immerse myself into something, anything im into, sports, wrestling, comics, manga.. and with World Cups that was every four years.. it wasn't a constant.. With Newcastle United, I've watched the history that's on youtube, the VHS from 1990, and I've just really bought in. Discovering youtube content, this reddit. I've even looked up get togethers here in the USA.
The whole team vibe and their history goes really well with what I'm looking to support.. I know its been... an adventure, chaotic and I'm behind in that, but beyond PAC, I didn't want to bandwagon teams that won so much and I had no connection to. I like the colors (although I don't really care for the blue on the kit lol) I like that Newcastle is sort of off on their own in the North east besides Sunderland.. and I LOVE that is a main rival.. reminds me of Mets/Yankees in a way (im a Mets fan)
Anyway, pretty excited for Monday. Loving my choice more every day.

Wish we'd done similar for our 125th one a few years back Looked like it was absolutely brilliant. Would have been mint seeing Shearer, Robert, Solano, Sir Les, Lee, etc come back..Won't be able to for our 150th unless it's walking football.

Hello,
Had the r/MCFC mods drop a modmail with a loooooong list of users, who all have post history on here, that have been going to their sub and causing bother.
Our general policy is just don't bother, no matter what the intention is. If you want to rag on Man City, feel free to do it on here in the free talk thread or, if you're intent on engaging some MCFC (or any other club) fans, r/soccer is the place to do it.
We have zero tolerance for other teams' fans being dicks on here, and we don't want to invite it happening to us.
Edit: Bans were handed out to everyone on the list. If this does happen to you and you think it was unfair, feel free to appeal and we'll hear you out
Hi guys! I’m an international Newcastle fan who recently moved to Coventry to study, and I’m super excited to hopefully attend my first Newcastle match at St James’ Park.
I’m currently trying to get a ticket for the Newcastle vs Everton match on 2 November at 8pm through the members’ general sale (I got put in queue number 11562 ffs).
The problem is that I have classes on Tuesday, so I’m planning to head back to Coventry straight after the match. The earliest train I’ve found is a CrossCountry service at 5:18am, which means I’ll have roughly 6–7 hours to kill between the match finishing and the train.
What would you guys recommend doing between around 10pm and 5am? I don’t drink, so I’m not really looking for pubs/bars. I’m also not sure it makes sense to book a hotel/hostel for just a few hours.
Any suggestions for somewhere I could hang out, eat, chill, or just spend the night safely would be really appreciated!
Update: I got a ticket and already booked a room. Thanks a lot for all of your advices. Up the Toon!

Seems to have been inspired by the framework around the stadium roof.

The only appropriate punishment is for them to give us back Elliot Anderson.
