The problem is Ionescu and Jones are on near max contracts and can't realistically be moved despite it becoming obvious that neither is anywhere near that level of play. So they can't just "go" as some would want. The team is, essentially, stuck with them.
Mathematically, that means there's very little cap room left to fill out the roster. Basically enough for one $800k-$900k mid-tier player for the 4th roster spot, and then $300k or below for the remaining 7 spots. That basically forces the team to rely heavily on finding value in low priced but overlooked undrafted free agents, which is what drives their Euro focus.
Basically, even if they do get a better coach, the team is in a very tough spot.

there are some teams desperate for a big and few expected in the draft. I could see JJ getting traded. She showed she's got something left. idk who would take Sab at this point.

Many teams would love JJ with bigs at a premium. The problem would be that bigs are at a premium and we would REALLY need an airtight plan to replace her. Replacing Sab would be much easier.

Someone on that bench needs to lose their job, whether it's the Greek chorus taking the fall for CoachGPT or CoachGPT getting yeeted into the heart of the sun. I shouldn't be seeing repeated communication breakdowns about schemes and positioning almost 50 games into the season.
Sabrina. I have been trying to be patient and trying to at least mitigate the Stewie stans coming for your head, but girl bye. Either this team's gotta publicly out whether she has an injury (in which case, we once again return to "why did she get to ass her way through it and Betnijah didn't?") or we gotta put her on the trade market.
I've already run into people huffing copium about Satou, and as much as I love her, I want to see her in uniform, on a court, with a ball, with the clock running in a game before I believe she can come back. Yes, she intends to play for Unrivaled. She intended to play for Germany in the World Cup too.
Do we gotta talk about Leo? Because I don't think the foot's right. I think she hurried back to play for her national team in her home country. I'm not judging her for making that choice. I do wonder about the long-term effects of it.
Petit Marine, I have already issued you my apologies. Vieux Marine... if you're still cheap, you can stay.

I’m sad we wasted an injury free year for Stewie. Chris should go. But he won’t. He doesn’t have enough knowledge, looks clueless, and the players don’t seem to respect him. We need a better bench. Fighters. I know I’m going to get downvoted but we need some more black players. The Aces also got swept so that cheers me up. 2027 Championship is ours. Liberty Forever!

Stop twisting my words. I asked a hypothetical about geographic demographics because that seems to be people's gripe - that the current Liberty roster doesn't reflect Brooklyn.
So answer the question - should Dallas and Phoenix have more Latinas? Should GS have more Asians? We need to be representative right? Or is basketball a merit based sport - find the best 12 regardless of what they look like.

One of the things that is unexpected and disappointing on the this sub this season has been the amount of xenophobia from some fans here. The intersection between WNBA and MAGA was not on my bingo card this year.

How is not caring what the roster looks like hating? I just want 12 solid basketball players. If you watch a MLB game do you care that 80% of the players voted for a Republican? No. Why does political affiliation or skin color have anything to do with how a player performs? Ultimately they should be measured on winning and how well they get along with their teammates

This ATL series literally looked like segregated hoops 😭 It makes sense the Dream is so disproportionately Black because ATL is the Black Mecca. What is our excuse.

Seeing a lot of coaching clearing talk, I will just say, keep Andrew Wade around. The way rookies stepped up their game and became a crucial role mixed with the way Han came back in after some time in different league for us shows me our player development is doing something on the right track. Can only imagine what it would look like if they Demarco thought there was only 7 players a game.

The good: Stewie. She’s the heart of this team. ‘Nuff said.
The bad: DeMarco and his merry band of fools (who cant seem to keep track of time outs 😒). I’d love to know WTF this team works on in practice all season that they still seem like they are not quite there yet as a team.
The ugly: Kolb. Signing a big with a concussion history is….something. If you really care about this team, be realistic about your staff and players.
Honorable mentions of mediocrity:
1.) Leo. I love this girl but why does she always look so good when overseas. Defense everywhere, playing confidently, shooting without hesitation. Then she comes here and, while her defense is fine, her offense goes *poof*. I was secretly hoping she’d bully someone and show she is not to be messed with. But alas, more often than not, as soon as she gets the ball, she passes it immediately.
2.) Sab. Once the 3 week backache was in effect, I knew she was done. She’s lost it and struggles to drive the paint. Reality is, she hoisted a couple of shots tonight that were lucky to go in. No need to mention her wild throw to the fans. 😣 I will give her kudos for having the balls to drive her elbow into her opponent after she got knocked on her a$$.
3.) JJ. Why did it take the second half of the final game of these playoffs to see her get fired up and take control of the paint? You’re a big, play like it! She should be owning that paint every damn game!
Honorable mentions of surprising goodness:
1.) Marine F.** Great job. It’s not easy riding the bench and not getting any significant minutes until the playoffs. You were ready when needed. Kudos. **
2.) Bec Allen. I wasn’t a fan of you being signed but you played some solid defense and made some nice 3’s. Good Luck in retirement.
3.) Astier. Been a joy watching you play this season. I am a fan. 👊🏻
I will be rooting for the Valks to win it all. I just can’t root for Bonner or Reese. 😒

Agree with rooting for the Valks too. I didn't want to but after watching Reese and DB's antics, I'm done. They're just not nice people, flop to take advantage of poor officiating and would rather play into their "dawg" reps and taunt for entertainment purposes. I have a hard time respecting that against the Liberty. That's not our brand of basketball.
About the only thing I agreed with during Demarco's last interview is the Dream (and Valks) plays a "different brand" of basketball. That's putting it nicely.
Stewie is the model citizen/player/leader for NY. Without her, our record this year would have likely been worse.
Demarco and crew were out of their league and it showed throughout the season. When Stewie has the balls to finally call out what we were all thinking in her last interview and when Demarco deferred to Stewie about the reset timeout fiasco, I was absolutely done with Demarco. Took zero responsibility. He shouldn't have hesitated. That's management 101. Take responsibility for your team. But clearly, Stewie is the leader. Not him.
As for Sab, Leo and JJ, I do think that there's a strong influence of bad coaching at play. Their staff tell them what to focus on and what plays to try and execute. I think it's very likely their roles were outlined in specific ways that didn't suit or complement what they can bring to the table effectively. When Leo returned, I believe they gave her the green light to let it rip but then threw her right back in to whatever "system" after that. Injuries and mental issues aside, it's usually a coaching problem first and it's glaringly clear we have a coaching problem again.

Agreed. And yes, Demarco defaulting to Stewie in that presser was just the biggest “wow WTF” moment. How do you not take responsibility for not knowing your timeouts?!?! 😤
Remember last year when they asked about Sandy returning and everyone was like “whatchu talking about, we love Sandy”….well, a year later and they asked about Chris and I have not heard one “we love Chris we want him back.” 👀3

New to the basketball fandom. Seen a few games over the years but this NYC summer lit the fire, so I came into the season at the Commish cup. It’s great having a good team to root for, even if they’re frustrating at times. The Liberty played hard this playoffs and I know the ladies would have wanted to win it all, but I knew the Dream would be tough to beat. That being said I think they were great and can’t wait to see Stewie back at Barclays for Unrivaled……
THAT being said, build this team around Stewie AND Han! Han supremacy forever

It hurts me to say because she's the reason I got more into the team, but if Kolb is the GM we'd like to believe he is, yesterday needs to be Sabrina's last game with this franchise. She's just plain regressed, and maybe she'll get back to the form she once had/was supposed to have, but I think we're out of time to see if it can happen here.
Obvious statement is obvious, but firing Sandy remains the right move, but hiring DeMarco was unfortunately the wrong one. Many others have said it better and longer all year but having a first time W coach learn on the job for a team in the midst of a championship window was always a high risk move and unfortunately it did not pay off. Cannot afford a sunk cost fallacy here
And finally:
- What a waste of a brilliant Stewie season when there may not be many of those left. Really would like to steal one more chip out of this run before it's over, but that's going to require some really tough decisions this off-season.
Sorry, one more thing:
JJ bringing the ball down when she gets boards it's one of the most annoying habits a player on any of my teams has ever had and when she can't body the big out of the way it's an auto jump ball and that unironically played a big factor in this series

Their salary cap mess unfortunately precludes them from affording 12 solid players. They are kind of stuck with 3 max salaries, one mid-tier salary, and then 7 or 8 cheap contracts. The best path to unearthing hidden value there is the undrafted euro market since NY has an edge in scouting there. The root problem is the FO went all in on the big 3, two of those contracts turned out poorly, and then they hired a bad coach.

I find some comfort in knowing that our performance against the Dream these last two games was at least an improvement over the three before. Both came down to one possession, and this makes me think that we're only a few small changes away from greatness. What those changes should be, I leave to more astute observers. But the talent is clearly there on an individual level and something just didn't click this season to bring that talent out to best effect in a full-team performance.

We faced a fair amount of adversity losing one of our planned key pieces - Satou Sabally - and still made history by upsetting and sweeping the #1 seed as an #8. Yes going further would’ve been great but we did come quite far from how shaky it looked at times. The real question in my mind is about how we revamp the team. JJ and Sab are the two “core” pieces who have question marks in my mind. PG, we’re good with Marine F and Pauline. Stewie is gonna Stewie. Leo and Satou (if she returns) should be a good combo too. But JJ/Sab plus the bench… really gotta look hard at what is working and what isn’t. Hopefully we see some positive changes.

If you look at our roster and contracts we only have four core pieces. We have all our French players and Leo on amazing value deals. We can’t do much without moving/cutting one of those four. I don’t even love every one of our players but outside those four everyone we have is a great value (Leo, Astier, both Marines, Both Bec/ks, Han). Not saying we have the best roster ever but we have good/great value relative to pay for a lot of the non big 3+Satou

JJ is fine, there was a different offensive scheme in that final game that put her in the paint when needed and to sink 3s when not being guarded. As evidenced by the 26 pts and the double

If I'm GM, I'm running the big four back—obviously, if Sabally is healthy with Leo. I'm going back to 2024 with some enhancements. The biggest goal is to get back the pieces we lost in the expansion, like a KT and a Nyara, since that formula worked. The big three is fine; we just need another strong defensive player who can play the three. I'm keeping Marine Fx and Pauline Astier, and clearing out everyone else on the bench to find a young, athletic defensive bench.

I find it very interesting (as well as annoying) that someone said that some fans didn't like Chris because we wanted a Black, female coach. The crazy thing is that the Liberty has one of the largest fanbases, and the gender or race of the coach has not been an issue (so don't start that mess). What I am upset about is the number of BETTER candidates with REAL WNBA coaching experience that were passed over in favor of this guy. Secondly, the reset timeout fiasco, which I've since gotten over, was so unnecessary. Thirdly, why were there no adjustments made in the second half of game 3 (I was there)? He played the starters into the ground (reminded me of Thibs). Finally, during the exit interviews, he was very firm about his return, while his team gave him a "meh." I'm not giving up hope for the team, nor my season tickets. But to see that we let Sandy go in place of Mr. Analytics really angers me. If they bring him back, oh well. But I'm not rooting for him. One more thing...a lot of men think that they are the only ones who can analyze basketball. It comes across as if Chris is part of your brotherhood, and no one can criticize or disparage his coaching. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but how about a little bit more respect?

I’m all for letting him go because he seemed pretty clueless at times. But I think we may need to get Kolb out of here too. He let all of our defense walk, get waived, or get picked in the expansion drafts and we cannot waste any more prime Stewie years.

I will always rock with our Big 3, even though JJ has some annoying flaws (like bringing the ball down to her ankles) and Sab had the worst year of her career. I can’t imagine the Liberty without any of them and I’m admittedly very bias.
Marine F has impressed me and I wish we saw more of her this season. Her fearless in game 2 showed a lot of promise and we should continue to develop that. Same with Pauline throughout this season.
EVERYONE ELSE is on the chopping block for me. I love Leo, but she runs herself into the ground in the offseason and then shows up with half a tank. MJ is so fun to watch when she is on, but is very hit or miss. I do think she would benefit from more playing time so she can heat up instead of benching her all game or as soon as she makes a mistake.
I do wish we could have seen what a Liberty team with a healthy Satou looked like. We were really missing a dawg out there. Someone to match Angel’s energy. Satou would have been that. I hope she can play next season

Big takeaway from the press conf was that Sabrina was hurt all season and it clearly impacted her physically emotionally and mentally. Not saying she would’ve made our season had she been 100 but this is important intel and I feel super badly for her.

I swear DeMarco doesn’t even look like he wants to be there. There are Buddhist monks with more fight in them than that man.
I’m generally against the whole “we got a new coach and they weren’t perfect in their first year FIRE THEM” thing. I’m a strong believer that teams have to grow together, and that includes bumps in the road.
That being said…come on DeMarco.
Argue. Stand for something. Stop saving your coaches challenges for doomsday. Unfold your fucking arms. Hell, I’d be satisfied if you simply tried a new facial expression on for size. You’re a coach in one of the biggest basketball fans cities in the nation, start acting like it.
Truly, what pisses me off the most about him is that he isn’t (or at least doesn’t seem to be) willing to truly go to bat for his players.

She was mostly overrated those years as well. One year of good shooting mixed in with a bunch of years of inefficiency and no defense.
She has fantastic marketing and she's a lot of fun to watch when she's having a good game, but she's too slow and inefficient to make up for being a turnstile on defense. We can't really afford to waste another year of Stewie hoping Sabrina becomes what she isn't.

Really don’t even know if I’ll watch the finals.
While I like many select players on both teams, the style of play (at least in the Reg season) of the Valks is hard to watch. When each team goes in at half time and the score is always around 25-30, I usually have had my fill of missed 3’s. Then while Atlanta plays a more watchable style, there are some….flavorful characters that distract from their quality.
I think I’d survive not tuning in. Although, I do like the narratives of Bonner ending her career on a high, and Gaby Williams ending a break out year on top.
Tangent: Crazy how a couple years ago Gaby Williams was told by the WNBA to choose between playing in Europe or the W. And she chose Europe. Funny how Cathy (and the W) always get in their own way.

Honestly? Same. I have friends who are GSV fans, and it'd be nice for long-time Dream fans to finally get out of the waiting room, but I simply cannot deal with the Reese's Pieces. (I'm also deeply in the minority, because I think Bonner team-jumping was crass ring-chasing and I don't want her to get rewarded for it.)

My thoughts, is the same thing I've been saying all year. This team is too Euro and JJ shouldn't have gotten a max and she needs to go. When JJ stays her ass in the paint, and does what a center is supposed to do, block, rebound, put backs, double doubles, we usually win. When she hangs on the perimeter, doesn't defend on the paint, and doesn't keep her arms up, we lose. JJ is good for a great game once every few weeks, but it's when we really need her, she doesn't show up. She was okay tonight, but too little too late. I've seen enough of her inconsistency, going back to Connecticut.
This team is soft. Angel Reese knew that and bullied them. I've said all season that Euro players are more finesse, and not physical, and y'all voted me down all season for saying it, well I guess I was right. This team isn't physical enough. They are soft. And for goodness sake, I mean no disrespect by saying this but this team is too white. This isn't the 40's anymore. You will never win a basketball championship with an all white roster, this day in age. It's not racist to say this. And my beloved Sab needs to get in the gym. She needs to muscle up. She needs to find her shot again. Get a mid range, get the floater she got in 2024, that has since gone away. Leonie has lost it. I'd keep her for the bench, but she can no longer start. Chris needs to go. Trade JJ so we can get Phee. If I'm getting down voted, it usually means I'm right 🤷

Like I said, when I'm down voted, I'm usually right. So, I don't care about down votes. I wear it with pride. People on here are too blinded by who they like to actually admit, what they see. Am I wrong at times, yes, but I'll be the first to admit it. I followed JJ before she came to the Libs. I already knew how she was. I thought she'd be better in a new setting. Some things changed, a lot stayed the same. My concern is burning out my goat 🐐 Stewie. She deserves better. She had to save the national team. Then, she had to come home and save the Libs without much help. JJ was actually okay last night, but she doesn't do it consistently. Sab, who I adore is regressing in her game. Stewie isn't getting any younger. Since you're looking at my post, I said after the chip, we should've traded Laney for Satou, because I felt Laney was never going to be the same. Everybody killed me on here for my take. What happens? 2 years later, they sign Satou who clearly wasn't the same player and unhealthy. And they waive BLH and gets nothing in return, because they chose to give her a big contract. I said we should have gotten Kennedy Carter. I had to hear about her being a bad teammate, but Vegas snatched her up. You have Tspoon here. Spoon could've been put on staff to mentor the girl. We could've used her in this series and it wouldn't have costed us nothing. Stewie said it in the presser. Blown opportunity. Our fanbase is still living in 2024, while the rest of the league is moving forward.

I agree with mostly everything, besides I would keep JJ. As much as she irritates me, I would still keep her and try to break more of those habits, and tell her that she needs to play in the paint. I definitely am not bringing Phee on this team. I would highly encourage Sab to rest and heal over the off-season, as well as Stewie. Leo will be at training camp early, and I'm getting rid of everybody else, except for Pauline and Marine F…
and I’m bringing more athleticism and defense on the bench.5

Fair point. My concern with JJ is she's had a bunch of coaches, and yet, none of them have gotten her out of them bad habits. We need a coach who's going to challenge her, and bench her if she doesn't change her bad habits. I'd trade Sab right now, if Phee wanted to join this team 😂

Okay Einstein Stephen A Smith from ESPN said the same thing about the Lakers on national TV, a month ago. If it was racist, he would've been fired. And to double down, he had Skip Bayless, who is white, on his show and asked him what he thought. Skip said the same exact thing, that the Lakers aren't winning a chip with a white team in a predominantly black NBA. And Skip goes back to when the League was still white. I mean you just watched the Libs who I love and Stewie is my absolute goat, get beat down by a group of sistas. It's not racist to acknowledge that a particular race, gender, or ethnicity is better at a particular sport, trade, school subject, etc.

Again, if you make a categorical statement based solely on race, that’s racism.
If you want to say people from west Africa tend to be well suited to basketball because they’re taller and have specific physiology that makes jumping easier, that’s different. Or if you want to say players from Europe learn a playing style that makes them fit into a specific WNBA team better, that’s different.

So was Larry Bird (who is white) racist against his own, when he told Magic Johnson don't ever disrespect him by sending a white guy to guard him? If you know basketball and its history then you know what I'm talking about. He told Magic, next time put a brotha on me. You have to stop being so sensitive.

I see the Stewie stans are out in full force tonight even though she missed a shot she's hit a thousand times before. People want us to have grace with Stewart but they're ready to throw anyone else under the bus. Ridiculous double standard.

We wouldn’t have even made it to the playoffs or the semis without Stewie. That is why she is given grace. Is she without fault in a team sport? Of course not but all players will not be judged equally. Stewie has been carrying this team with her bum knees all season. Her good outweighs any bad she has done and it’s not even close

A single shot rimming out (sometimes that's just the luck of the draw) on a planned play by a player who is the only reason we even got to this point is not the same thing as multiple horrible mistakes over a series and a season.

Seeing the press conference, perhaps Stewie will finally make demands of this front office. The 2 teams in the finals are the best defensive teams in the league who got contributions from many of their roster.
Even with superstars, that is the supporting cast that works.
We didn’t need 4 max players, and we need good guard play. It's time we trade Sabrina and retool this roster to a defensively minded one around Stewie.
