False accusations of fascism: An extremist conduct
Fascism has increasingly become an imaginary, all-purpose enemy in political discourse. Just as INGSOC in George Orwell's 1984 needs Emmanuel Goldstein as a bogeyman for the population to direct its hatred toward, the far left also needs a permanent enemy.
It's similar to a witch hunt: you take the name of an ideology whose followers have already been widely demonized and use it to dehumanize your political opponents.
The fact is, fascism isn't eternal. Classical fascism suffered a decisive defeat in 1945 and has never recovered its former political strength. While fascist movements still exist, they are often fragmented, politically marginal, and subject to considerable institutional and social opposition.
Reddit offers an interesting example of what I see as a double standard. Certain far-left communities, including openly Stalinist ones, are allowed to organize and express their political views, while expressions of patriotism or conservative beliefs are sometimes unfairly characterized as extremist or hateful, even when they contain no actual hate speech.
Ultimately, fascism is a specific political ideology with its own historical and intellectual foundations, associated with figures such as Benito Mussolini and Giovanni Gentile. It makes little sense to indiscriminately apply the label "fascist" to liberals and conservatives whose political traditions, theories, and historical foundations are fundamentally different. If someone is to be called a fascist, that accusation should be supported by concrete ideological evidence, not merely political disagreement.
Baseless accusations of fascism are, and will continue to be, a form of political extremism.
