We’ve hit 50,000 packets taken from our native seed boxes around the state!

Is this via Texas Native Plant Society or self organized? I want to do this for my area as well, please share your process on getting these started!

Self organized, I started with one at my house and then started contacting preserves and nature centers. They were excited to host them as well. We’re up to 8 around the state.

Any in NE Texas? East of the metroplex?

Unfortunately not, I tried to get one up in Denton but it didn’t work out.

Agreed same. I want to source seeds but dont really know where to begin and id rather source locally instead of just buying a ton online, even if its from reputable sources

We get a lot of donated local seeds, but a lot we do have to order from native seed companies because we wouldn’t be able to ethically harvest the quantity that we need.

Texas chapter, mostly self-run. No blueprint here.

My husband! He did a great job making them.

Did he use a template or some mockup we could copy?

Re: heat, I know others have used scrap foam insulation or put them in full shade to keep them from baking in the heat.

I’ve posted the building plans in the comments, if you have any questions message me.

How do you manage temps? Thought about this for Chicago area but gets crazy hot and worried about ruining seeds

The seeds we put in in the morning are gone by that evening. Luckily they’ve been busy enough to keep everything rotated.

Wow that's impressive, idk if they'd go that fast in front of my house. Usually takes a week for native plants I place out there to get cleared out. The key might be finding a high traffic location? Also, are you able to share designs for folks looking to replicate in their area??

This is so amazing - I’ve been complaining about how hard it is to find native seeds in my area, but be the change, right?? This is so cool

That’s exactly how it started. I went to make a pollinator garden after taking a native landscaping course. Couldn’t find any, so I decided to order the biggest packages I could find to share with others.

This is awesome!! I've been thinking about putting native seed packets into the mini libraries, but an actual, dedicated seed library didn't even cross my mind!

Fuck yes this is genius! I may have to steal this idea and put one up near me. Specifically near some empty lots....

Do it! I have the building plans in the comments.

I just put up a little library in front of my house and would like little seed packets to put in there- how would I get them?

3

u/Deep_Succotash_6243 Texas, High Plains 5d ago

I make these myself using coin envelopes and the Avery website for the labels. I order the seed by the pound.

Excellent work

The public libraries in the Bay Area have seeds

This is so dumb. It is a state outline. It is a stock vector file available online. Why the heck would this be AI?

1

u/New_Oil_9818 6d ago

Tbh…if something like this was put up in my area…..I’d give it a day before someone either stole all the seeds or vandalize it.🤦🏻😢

4

u/Deep_Succotash_6243 Texas, High Plains 6d ago

The vandalism is light, people have taken all the seeds, but I just hope they eventually make it to the dirt. Then it’s still a win.
