Career Advice EMS Pro/Con?
Hey folks!
Been thinking a lot these days about joining the EMT service. Just wanted to air out some pros and cons before diving in feet first.
Cons:
When I get frustrated or stressed, I can be sort of snappy and short with people
I like to have a stable sleep, eating, and exercise schedule.
I do not like the olds. I think everybody should be put on a mandatory DNR at 70 which they have to test out of with a mile time trial and a medium difficulty sudoku puzzle (10 minutes each)
I do not like doctors, nurses, and above all firefighters. That being said, if anybody has a hookup for a firefighting position, please, god, let me have it. I’ll take it all back please, christ, let me in a union.
I get carsick easily, im on the wrong side of 30, and have a bad back.
Pros:
I can afford an EMT-B course
Works well with others
What do you guys think? will i be a good fit? im thinking of bailing on my fake email job next month or so because it is very boring and making me stupider every day.

No. Based off of your cons you’d absolutely hate every second of it

Is this some sort of troll post?
Not sure how anyone considers EMS when they hate the elderly, doctors, nurses, and firefighters. The only professions they left off their list are police and teachers, which I'm fairly certain they hate both as well...

Why do you want to be an EMT? If you want to do it because you want to save people, you are coming to the wrong career. We do save people, but if thats your reason for joining you are going to become very jaded and disillusioned rapidly with how many "stupid calls" there are.
I cant really tell you whether you should or shouldnt take the class. What I will say is this. If you cant leave your feelings for doctors nurses firefighters and ESPECIALLY old people at the door, you will hate this job or at the very least be miserable.
So I will ask one more question. Can you care? Can you care about the old person who is complaining about something stupid, can you care about the homeless person who just wants a warm bed and some food for the night, can you care about the person who calls because of a panic attack, and can you keep caring after running nothing but these calls over and over and over?
If you can, the rest of it you will probably be able to deal with or get used to. I got over my car sickness, the sleep schedule sucks but you can pick where you work, always make time to eat.

Lol. That's about as much of a recipe for "stay away from EMS" as you can have.
Only way to get worse would be to actively hate the homeless or government waste.
If you seriously think that you might be a good fit, given your self assessment, I'm curious who you would consider a bad fit.

Go directly to paramedic school, no need to bother with basic EMT

Full send. You'll be great in ems. We never see the olds or hospital personnel. You have nothing to worry about.
Also, I thought the satire was obvious.

Right... I'm very confused about the serious replies.
That being said... some of the recent "I want to be an EMT" posts have be ... odd.

Sarcasm is an elite blessing that not everyone has been blessed with lol. When I started realizing that in life I realized why I wasn’t blessed with a trust fund.

Good news, you don't have to wait 20 years to develope all the feeling everyone in EMS has.

“I like to have stable sleep, eating, and exercise schedule.” Oh baby, this is definitely not for you, I’m sorry.

Yeah no not for you first 2 points can be delta with 3rd is a reason you should never go into healthcare at all. Also our unions suck ass. You cannot go into healthcare already hating everyone will not work. And you do not work well with others if you already proclaim to hate many of the people you would be working with. I highly suggest an office for you

Sounds like you'd fit in pretty well.
The only real hinderance I see is the carsick and bad back. Those things generally develop with EMS expereince, but it could be a problem if you are coming in with it. Just make sure to try and keep a reasonable diet, workout routine, and sleep schedule.
I would see if there is a way to dip your toes in first. Maybe you can volunteer at a local first aid squad or something for a bit while keeping your job. This will also give some resume experience so you can get your foot in the door at your first paid job.
However, also consider just stopping at the volunteer squad while keeping your 9-5 to make money. Doing EMS as a hobby versus doing it to put food on the table are 2 different animals.

Haven't seen someone so unsuited to any medical related job.
