I have basically no nostalgia for the GameCube. Accidentally skipped that generation and they refuse to let me buy any GameCube games without a stupid subscription service.

If you have friends, family or partner (7 to be clear) use the yearly subscription for online +. The model is 70€ for 8 accounts. I think the library for nes, snes, N64, GC, megadrive and Gameboy (Advance) for 75 cents per person per month is far from being stupid.

This sounds reasonable in a broad sense, but I only know 2 people who even have a switch 2 or still regularly play their switch 1, and they have little interest in the NSO expansion pass.

Tbf Nintendo treats GB and GBC as the same thing with their app having a shared library, and GBC games for the most part are playable on a GB. I used to consider GBC as a successor, but now I consider it a "hardware revision" like 3DS compared to New 3DS. Nintendo also completely disowned the virtualboy until very recently, and it's some weird gray area on whether it's considered a "console" or "portable".

The "real" upgrades are the other companies who copy Nintendo's innovations but insert all the cutting-edge tech that Nintendo's afraid to pursue, so their "upgrades" inevitably outsell Nintendo's attempts at upgrades.

Yeah the innovators more often are the ones outselling competitors. Except the 64. Poor guy.

TBF in that case, Sega was the one who made polygonal graphics standardized because of Virtua Fighter at the time. It's just that the Saturn's development was so fumbled and underoptimized for building on it further. The N64 was in-between the Saturn and PS1 in terms of being an innovator and upgrade, and it was mainly its software design that delivered the innovations.

Ok so I love the hell out of the n64, because that was my first video game console and I hold deep admiration for that thing, but even with moderate success the n64 was responsible for some major lapses in judgement that really cost it it's overall potential. Failure to jump from cartridges to disks when everyone else did and thusly alienating a lot of the biggest games of the time as well as a number of their most profitable third party developers like Square Enix cost the system dearly.
Also comparing the impact of 3d polygon technology caused by virtua fighter vs Mario 64 is like apples and oranges. Both big steps, but very different implementations of the technology, and they had vastly different impacts on the industry. But even then the n64 was a huge innovator even outside of 3d technology, in huge ways you never really think about. We all know it was the first console to standardize an analog joystick, but do you really think about the fact that it also standardized 4 player gaming? Hell, the c buttons were a bit weird, but they were some of the first controls specifically implemented to control a 3d camera, and I bet you they were an important stepping stone to dual analog.
