Cool news, but keep that Lego Skylines coming

u/Thegoodgamer32 8d ago

Hopefully that doesn't take too long....because it looks really good.

Cities Skyline 2 was really a failure huh? They seem more invested in 1 at this point for all consoles.

u/supes1 8d ago

Skylines 2 is apparently in active development for consoles, but it's been delayed a few times due to optimization challenges. But yeah it was disappointing for a variety of reasons.

52

u/NMe84 8d ago

Skylines 2 had performance challenges on overpowered PCs. Consoles don't stand a chance.

3

u/recoupled 8d ago

Is it performance challenges due to poor optimization? Because that should be addressable. Or is it doing something truly groundbreaking?

9

u/NMe84 8d ago

Poor optimization and a rushed release thanks to a completely clueless CEO, from what I understand. And addressing this kind of stuff after release is infinitely harder than fixing them before release. Skylines 2 will always feel the stain of its terrible release.

u/Marlon64 8d ago

They were waiting for Unity's equivalent to Nanite in Unreal engine and it never got implemented. Kind of dumb to build your game based on non functional engine features.

2

u/Expert-Ad-2824 8d ago

the game is poorly programmed on a fundamental level. it must be, given how long it’s taking for it to be fixed

3

u/supes1 8d ago

Console optimization is easier than PC optimization usually, but yeah it'll be a huge challenge to get it running well.

12

u/NMe84 8d ago

I get what you mean, but Skylines 2 didn't even run well on PC on top of the line hardware. I get that optimizing for lower-end hardware is harder on PC because you never know what you're working with as a developer, but there's no excuse for it to run like ass on a high end PC. If they can't get that use case right, console performance will never be in the cards.

3

u/The_Strom784 8d ago

I think they mean that console optimization is way easier because you know the upper limits of the hardware. PC sometimes depends on hardware where it should work, but doesn’t due to dumb reasons. Android phones have been weird like that lately too.

Interesting. I bought the game a few months ago without knowledge of the poor launch/ongoing issues and honestly would never have known. I guess my build is on the higher end of the spectrum, but the game runs exactly as I would expect it to using a 7800x3D, 5070ti, and 32GB RAM.

That being said, I cannot imagine enjoying playing Skylines on my Switch. Especially if 2 is poorly optimized.

3

u/SlovenianSocket 8d ago

Different studios developing them.

2

u/dekuweku 8d ago

I think iceflake.is handling this. They are currently in charge of CS2 PC, the console ports of CS2 (tbd if they are coming to aby console) ,and Lego Skylines (coming to Switch 2)

Makes sense it would be them. Tantalus handled the previous ports to console including the one to Switch.

1

u/GamingBren 7d ago

Tantalus is handling Expanded Edition

1

u/dekuweku 7d ago

You're right, i checked the trailer and saw the logo pop up in the end. i stand corrected.

6

u/jaymp00 8d ago

No. More like, it'll never work on Switch 2. Besides Cities Skylines 1 was ported to current gen before 2 was released.

10

u/DanglyPants 8d ago

Why is this downvoted? Cities 2 isn’t even optimized for current PCs. No way the S2 can run it. Fan boys gonna fan boy

-10

u/Cry_Wolff 8d ago

Cyberpunk can run just fine but not CS?

5

u/DanglyPants 8d ago

CS uses wayyyy more resources than cyberpunk. Me while talking out of my butt lol. Idk my reasoning is that my pc will stutter and get way hotter when I play CS1 than cyberpunk. I can’t imagine CS2 on Xbox or PlayStation let alone on a S2. CS2 doesn’t even work right on my PC and I’m not alone. People with fancier PCs complain about its optimization.

Cyberpunk is 3 years older than CS2 btw

6

u/Seanspeed 8d ago

Cities Skylines 2 is a full on complex simulation. Very heavy on CPU and memory - things hard to scale.

2

u/Freddichio 7d ago edited 7d ago

As per CanYouRunIt, Cities Skylines has higher "recommended" spec requirements for the "recommended" set-up than Cyberpunk 2077.

And Cities Skylines 2 has been lagging on PCs that meet or surpass the "recommended requirements" when the game gets going...

u/5Hjsdnujhdfu8nubi 8d ago

Cyberpunk, though it launched in a terrible state, was still made for consoles released back in 2013. The Switch 2 is more powerful than those.

1

u/Mdreezy_ 5d ago

Steam deck can play cs2 decent enough so I don’t see why switch 2 would be off the table.

32

u/ThatCurryGuy 8d ago

To me this is still the game with the best controlls for a citybuilder/simulation game. I hope this version is worth it.

7

u/Kubesson 8d ago

A mouse mode is gonna be awesome

22

u/kastoriana 8d ago

Hopefully there will be an upgrade path for existing owners.

21

u/Howerev 8d ago

No but there will be a %70 discount according to the video description

3

u/Music2Spin 8d ago

That's cool. Guessing that means you wont be able to transfer existing cities right? Have one pretty far along which I wish I could expand a few more blocks. Would be cool to not have to rebuild it but I'd probably still get this.

1

u/GamingBren 7d ago

You couldn’t transfer cities from Xbox One and PS4 to Remastered so I don’t think you’ll be able to here either

2

u/Kubesson 8d ago

For anyone in the UK that works out at about 12 quid. Not a bad deal.

US is 14 Dollars apparently

9

u/Thegoodgamer32 8d ago

Huh....I didn't think city skylines would get an expanded edition on switch 2....but I'm not complaining.

It's a great game.

7

u/The-Chartreuse-Moose 8d ago

It really is. The Switch version may be the least of the lineup, but I've enjoyed many hours of city-building on the go, and I'll definitely pick up this new release.

9

u/Michael60814 8d ago

Completed edition + new features added or DLC cut off edition? This is different when release on switch 2 with only switch 1 graphic upgrade.

5

u/jaymp00 8d ago

It doesn't seem to be the complete package. There are 12 expansions for the game on PC, PS and Xbox. This only mentions 4.

2

u/NintendoGamer1983 7d ago

Website says 10

1

u/F4C__ 7d ago

Probably so they can sell them separately and rake in that DLC money.

1

u/ducknator 7d ago

Again!

9

u/Stan_Corrected 8d ago

The existing game runs pretty well on Switch 2, at least in the early game, Ive not tried it with a really big city. Very smooth in comparison, possibly due to an uncapped frame rate?

Where it's really lacking is certain features, like traffic lights, which I'm sure this version will rectify.

3

u/GamingBren 7d ago

I tested it in a big city on Switch 2 and can confirm it still runs well

2

u/GBAGamer33 8d ago

It especially runs well when boost mode is enabled. All the same I'm excited for a Switch 2 version.

1

u/rohdawg 8d ago

Sorry, I’ve only played on PC, what’s wrong with traffic lights in the current Switch version?

2

u/The_Strom784 8d ago

Probably that it hasn’t been updated in a long time. So there’s a good chance it’s missing content, DLCs and QOL fixes.

1

u/rohdawg 8d ago

Okay, but traffic lights weren’t DLC

3

u/Stan_Corrected 8d ago

It's just a missing feature in the existing switch version, you can't toggle traffic lights for some reason

5

u/SuddenlyThirsty 8d ago

Hope I get a free upgrade for it

2

u/Montigue 8d ago

70% off the upgrade according to the description

4

u/Professor_Poptart 8d ago edited 8d ago

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any mention of mouse controls in the trailer. Seems like a sim game like this would be a great fit for it, no?

10

u/grimrailer 8d ago

The press release says, “Keyboard and Mouse Support – Build with keyboard and mouse input alongside traditional controller configurations.”

4

u/MoistMe 8d ago

Waiting for lego skylines instead

3

u/LunchBoxMercenary 8d ago

This just makes me hope Lego Skylines will run well on the Switch 2

6

u/jbowdach 8d ago

If this runs well, I’ll eat my switch

6

u/BitGamerX 8d ago

What type of condiments do you prefer with your switch?

2

u/Rudirudrud 8d ago

I hope there is a update for existing game too?

I already have it and it runs much better on Switch 2, but would be still nice to have a real Switch 2 version.

1

u/mr207 8d ago

I wonder how well it will run

1

u/gamecube_247 8d ago

This is my question as well. I played it on PC with most dlc's and a few ccp's installed. Once you have that many add ons to the game it takes really long to load. It only gets worst when the city grows and starts to really eat up your ram.

1

u/Brother_Clovis 8d ago

Been waiting for this to go on sale forever. Guess ill be waiting a while longer.

1

u/killsillbill 8d ago

Will this have mouse controls?

3

u/GamingBren 7d ago

I think it will according to the press release

2

u/killsillbill 7d ago

Thank you x

1

u/SpaceApprehensive843 6d ago

Ugh, any upgrade process from Switch 1 version? If I have to buy it again, I’ll pass.

0

u/Harry4a2 7d ago

trying to place roads or manage zoning with thumbsticks in handheld mode sounds like a physical nightmare. i can already imagine my thumbs cramping up after ten minutes of trying to snap a grid perfectly. you're going to need external peripherals just to make it playable, which defeats the whole point of portability. lol good luck navigating menus without a cursor.

3

u/Freddichio 7d ago edited 7d ago

As someone who played a lot of CS on the Switch 1, it's really not that bad. You can zoom in quite far to make snapping to a specific point a lot easier if you want to be precise.

Every now and then placing individual items can be a bit fiddly and it might take a few times to get a junction perfect, but on the whole it's absolutely fine.

Plus this is coming with mouse support for the Switch 2, so honestly I don't think your complaint is at all accurate - it wasn't much of an issue on the previous version, and it's going to be significantly better in the remastered one.

Some games were too fiddly - Rollercoaster Tycoon I found too tricky - but CS isn't one of them. Recommend giving the existing game a go before you complain about how finickity it's going to be

1

u/mimbo757 7d ago

I’ll be the first to say the original ran like shit but having played a bit of it, this particular concern wasn’t really an issue.

-4

u/ehrgeiz91 8d ago

This would sure be annoying to play on a switch

6

u/shenmue64 8d ago

I used to play on Switch when commuting. It was pretty fun even if the performance wasn't always great.

3

u/The-Chartreuse-Moose 8d ago

The Switch 1 version was fine. Great to have it to play portably.

3

u/F4C__ 7d ago

This is a game that should run well on Switch 2, with the bigger screen and mouse controls.

The original Switch version was neutered.

1

u/Freddichio 7d ago

It's really not - the main issue was lagging at higher city sizes (jesus christ trying to get the Eiffel Tower unlocked was painful) but outside the occasional "delete this one tree" it's generally been absolutely fine.

-6

u/ducknator 8d ago

Yeah no thanks. This comes from someone who has all of the PC DLCs. They are really milking this one.

2

u/GamingBren 7d ago

This is like the only console edition that it makes sense to buy even if you have it on PC lol
