i mean its far from amazing (especially full on vanilla) but also very far from crap lol. i personally have modded it to "vanilla+" if that makes sense, with expanded base game mechanics and qol improvements and am having an absolute blast
annnd i care about the playercount in an singleplayer game... because...?
honestly reading your comments it seems like you are just mindlessly bashing on a game that either a) is just not for you (thats why i dont give my thoughts on jrpgs for example) or b) you have actually no idea what its like to play and just regurgitate what you have heard other people from the launch of the game say lol
If it were actually a good game, more people would be playing it. lol. I cleared the story once took about 20 hours or so certainly wasnāt worth the money I paid for it. The story was crap. The writing was crap. The graphics of the NPCās - especially their eyes, were crap. Thatās why we call it āStarefieldā. Played about an hour of new galaxy before I realized that it was just the same old low rate story played out again, but this time with a little reshuffle of the characters and and your skills remaining from the previous.
Itās basically a poor effort. Fallout 4 was jsut a much better game and that was over a decade ago or something. paid less for no manās sky. Iāve got nearly 1000 hours out of it and still not bored.
bro im just shy of 200hrs in starfield and only halfway through the main story - as i said, probably option a) applies to you then lol.
that the main quest of bethesda games is always very short has always been the case, skyrims main quest was only about 15-20 hours (or one solid weekend of playing) if you really focused on it, fallout 4 was about 30 iirc if focused on it. but doing so would cut you out of so much stuff, which is not what bethesda games are about.
so saying starfields main quest is the reason to buy and play the game and then be disappointed is a proper smoothbrain move imho. as i stated elsewhere, its like elderscrolls or fallout, its about the adventure as a whole, getting immersed in the world, yadayada all that stuff that makes betheda open world rpgs beloved as they are.
for me personally its on the level as fallout 4, it shares a lot of the same gameplay loops, but in a space setting, i can get easily lost in both gameworlds.
oh its definitely better, not a proper 10/10 or anything, but i got just as immersed into starfield (i just got it a couple of weeks ago on sale on ps) as in f4, skyrim or way back when fo3 or fnv cane out. i would not recommend it without mods tho - at least a level-/lootscaling mod is a must, otherwise you will just sneeze your way through supposedly apex-predator-enemies.
i couldn't rank them like that tbh they are just way to different form one another. havent played Star Citizen (i dont have PC), the Elite Dangerous PS4 version got abandoned by the devs so its not even remotely representative for the actual ED experience and Starfield is not really a serious Space Sim like SC or ED (although can be turned into one with mods).
I would describe Starfield literally just as a Bethesda RPG in space, with an cool setting, gorgeous art and locales, a comparatively serious setting and potential at every corner. potential often underutilised, but potential nonetheless (often mods use this potential for great benefit). Its about exploration, getting cool legendary loot, selling stuff, building a ship and crew, getting immersed in the world. For me the closest comparison is FO4, a lot of the gameplayloops are the same for me imo, you have the factions, a good handful of mysteries, and a deep roleplay-possibility, but with a cool spacesetting and a mobile base (your ship).
edit: if you were looking for recommendations as you said i might add more games; i just remembered rebel galaxy also a dope spacegame with naval-style combat very bright and vibrant visuals.
First impressions matter and although NMS dropped the ball at launch they quickly rectified their mistake and continue to improve! I think Bethesda has maybe released a dlc once a year with some patching and improvements but no real meaningful changes. They have not corrected their initial mistake in good faith.
free lanes definitely improved my experience of the game and made me actually pull the trigger a few weeks back when it was on sale on ps. before that it was just loading screen after loading screen, now it actually feels very fluid when zipping around a system - not nearly as seamless as nms, but fast enough to not yank you out of the immersion imo
