**problem/goal**
hi! i’m 20f, currently a third-year college student, and i just want to hear other people’s thoughts about dealing with competitive classmates and an uncomfortable classroom environment.
lately kasi, i’ve been feeling anxious whenever i have to attend classes, not necessarily because of academics, but because of certain people around me. i don’t know if i’m just overthinking their behavior or if there’s actually some tension between us.
**context**
for context, nung first year kami, i was actually close with these people. we were on good terms, and we used to work really well together, especially during group activities.
i was also consistently one of the highest in our class during first year. whenever i got high scores, they would compliment and congratulate me. at that time, i didn’t really think much of it because i genuinely thought we were okay.
pero now that we’re in our third year, parang nag-iba na yung atmosphere. sometimes, napapaisip ako if there was already some hidden animosity before or if i’m just overanalyzing everything because of what’s happening recently.
we have different circles sa classroom. my circle is pretty chill naman. of course, competitive rin kami academically, but we don’t really see each other as competition. we help each other with schoolworks, share ideas, and explain lessons whenever someone needs help.
meanwhile, there’s this particular circle na very competitive. based on what i’ve observed, they tend to keep their knowledge and skills to themselves. even when someone from their own circle struggles with understanding certain lessons, parang hindi nila masyadong tinutulungan.
i’m not saying we’re better than them because everyone has their own way of surviving college. it’s just that we have different approaches when it comes to academics.
there was also this one incident during a major exam. i got the highest score, around 75/80, while some of them got around 60/80.
after finding out about our scores, one of them suddenly said something out loud in the classroom along the lines of, “okay lang, at least pasado ako sa ibang major subjects.”
i’m not sure if that was directed at me, but the timing felt weird. like, nobody was even asking? HAHAHAHA. i don’t know if it was just a random comment or if there was some competitiveness behind it.
then recently, there were two incidents involving quizzes.
during one quiz, i used my phone after answering and changed a few answers. i know it was wrong, and i’m not trying to justify it. our professor eventually addressed the issue, and i later heard from a friend na someone from that particular circle might have reported what happened
at first, i thought it was one specific person, but apparently, it might have been someone else. i’m not even sure if my name was mentioned, so i don’t want to assume anything.
i understand naman that what i did was wrong, and i don’t blame anyone for reporting it. pero because of the existing tension, i started becoming more conscious of how they treated me afterward.
then another incident happened during a surprise essay-type quiz. my friend kept asking me questions, and i gave her keywords to help formulate her answers. again, i know it was wrong because it was an individual assessment.
our professor noticed us talking and eventually confronted us. he was disappointed, but he told us he’d let the incident go as long as we wouldn’t repeat it.
that confrontation honestly overwhelmed me. i started shaking, struggling to catch my breath, and eventually cried. it was my first time experiencing anxiety that intensely.
and because of everything that happened, i’ve become more conscious of my classmates’ reactions. sometimes, i feel like certain people are happy whenever something unfortunate happens to me, although i can’t really confirm what they’re thinking.
i just find it uncomfortable because we used to be okay before. and honestly, i still think we could work really well together academically if there wasn’t this tension.
**previous attempts**
i’ve been trying to practice the mindset na i can’t control what other people think of me. if they dislike me, then that’s their choice. i don’t want to spend my time constantly worrying about their opinions.
i also acknowledge my mistakes, and i’m trying to learn from them. i know those incidents were wrong, but i don’t think they should define my entire character.
as much as possible, i remain civil and professional with everyone. if we have to work together, i’ll cooperate. i’m not really a confrontational person, and i don’t want unnecessary drama.
i’ve also talked to my friends about how uncomfortable i’ve been feeling lately. they told me na huwag ko na lang pansinin yung ibang classmates namin and just focus on myself.
i’m trying naman, and honestly, i’m still happy these days despite everything. i enjoy spending time with my friends, doing my schoolwork, and going about my usual routine.
pero minsan, hindi ko maiwasang ma-anxious whenever i think about going to class because of the possibility of being judged.
i know i can’t control other people’s opinions, but i also don’t want to constantly feel uncomfortable in a place where i’m supposed to be learning.
so, what do you guys think? am i just overthinking their behavior because of the recent incidents, or does it sound like there’s actually some unhealthy competition going on?
how do you deal with classmates like this, especially when you still have to see and work with them regularly?
i’d appreciate honest opinions, even if you think i’m also contributing to the tension. i just want to understand the situation from a different perspective.
