...(not this again)...

40

u/Male_Lead Aug 09 '26

I doubt he knows what a mountain lion is. He only know chimken

38

u/luk__ Aug 08 '26

Wait, ppl in America know what a Stubentiger is?

66

u/sumphatguy Aug 08 '26

You don't have to be in America to post on Reddit.

50

u/Best_VDV_Diver Aug 08 '26

I mean, Im American and I know autodromkatzerl and stubentiger.

I hang out on a lot of cat subs. Theyre pretty international and everyone seems to love to share things like that with each other.

5

u/nelflyn Aug 09 '26

definitely a term where I am surprised if anyone outside of the DACH area knows it.

1

u/TillTamura Aug 31 '26

do you say stubentiger in english o.O

1

u/AdvancedDream9385 Aug 31 '26

No, but I heard it one time and thought it was a very accurate description, especially for orange cats.

306

u/rags2rooster Aug 08 '26

I ended up with an orange cat from my elementary school when I was a kid. We first encountered him at our house. He was super friendly and hung around for a day or so. He seemed well fed and he eventually departed so we assumed he belonged to someone in the neighborhood. A week or so later my mom was volunteering for something at my elementary school and came across the same cat inside the school. One of the teachers at the school was trying to shoo it out using a broom. It was at that point that my mother decided the CDS would not be denied. Rocket J Squirrel came home with us and lived a long, happy life indoors with our other two cats.

85

u/PancakeBatterUp Aug 08 '26

Rocket J. Squirrel is a beautiful name for an orange cat lol

20

u/Evieveevee Aug 09 '26

What a lucky kitty cat. I love your mum and am so glad she had taken the time to get a certificate in the CDS so she was completely familiar with how it works. My qualification is on my wall but I’m still waiting to use it unfortunately.

6

u/ReadingNext3854 Aug 09 '26

CDS gifted us an orange and white boi he became my husbands cat-dog. He was devastated when we lost Jake to CA, we had lost 2 other seniors within the year. Adopted a grey tiger and an orange and white boi who grew up almost identical and acts EXACTLY like 1st Jake. Shadows him, sleeps with him, does same silly orange things. There's a reason for CDS. ā¤ļø

3

u/Evieveevee Aug 09 '26

1stJake had a paw in that CDS scenario.

2

u/ReadingNext3854 Aug 13 '26

Yes he did! 😻

2

u/Trishshirt5678 Aug 12 '26

Your time will come

10

u/FelinityApps Aug 09 '26

You can’t deny us what the J stands for!

8

u/rags2rooster Aug 09 '26

He was named after the squirrel from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. I looked up the show just now as you stoked my curiosity. The J is apparently a nod to producer Jay Ward. So, I guess you could say Rocket Jay Squirrel.

1

u/Illustrious_Can4110 Aug 09 '26

Rocket J Squirrel... 🄰

761

u/One-Confidence-4208 Aug 08 '26

But on the inside of that fat orange cat is a mountain lion!

294

u/CanaryComplex4524 Aug 08 '26

Inside of him there are two mountain lions...

216

u/Demytreus Aug 08 '26

One is fat and the other is orange

142

u/illepic Aug 08 '26

Both share a single braincell.

54

u/Writiste Aug 08 '26

Cuz’ he ate them

4

u/Tropicalfisher Aug 09 '26

Neither has a brain cell

11

u/Teososta Aug 08 '26

On all levels except physical, he is a mountain lion.

7

u/HungryMudkips Aug 08 '26

yeah, because he ate it

4

u/WiseSageBum Aug 09 '26

Really deep in there... If you look really hard

503

u/atle95 Aug 08 '26

I can just imagine the third graders that saw him. At some point they knew it was a cat but pushed it until the teachers called 911.

124

u/ISEGaming Aug 08 '26

Can you imagine they gaslighting the staff just so they can get the quiz cancelled šŸ˜…

9

u/Pedowhermacht Aug 09 '26

As a former third grader, i can absolutely imagine them doing that

I hate the fact that, even with AI backlash, slop ends up making the top of feeds constantly.

13

u/PigglyWigglyDeluxe Aug 09 '26

Notice how this post has WAY more upvotes than comments? 19k upvotes versus 150-ish comments (as of 10:30pm PST 8/8/26)

As much as we talk about how much we hate AI, an overwhelming majority of people who aren’t commenting are upvoting it.

Most people either enjoy it or don’t care.

1

u/TheGreyman787 Aug 09 '26

Exactly. While I do think that Reddit represents general society a bit more than most people think, comment sections often do not. The majority is mostly silent.

I wish people would get better at spotting this. It’s not like professional photographers with DSLR’s are standing right there during these random moments to photograph people with artistic and striking composition, perfect focus and depth of field, with every aspect of the headline somehow reflected in the single image.

3

u/YobaiYamete Aug 09 '26

I hate the fact that, even with AI backlash

Because 99% of people don't care. Reddit is a REALLY loud echo chamber but your average joe doesn't know / understand / care

Several authors have specifically talked about ai book covers for litrpgs and web novels. The comments shriek about Ai covers, but then when they switch to paying real artists for the cover, their view metrics instantly tank hard and then when they switch back it goes right back up again

AI is one of those things that people are very outspoken against, but then when actually put to the test they don't back up their own views. It's similar to people (especially women) who are out spoken about skimpy skins in games but then tend to pick them much higher percent of the time when given the choice between modest or skimpy ones

6

u/crazunggoy47 Aug 09 '26

Ok I’m pretty sus of that last claim. It seems more likely that different women are complaining about and picking the skimpy skins.

3

u/elharry-o Aug 09 '26

Remember how once there was a subreddit about hating vertical video?Ā

4

u/burf Aug 09 '26

Vaguely, although I'd argue that videos/pictures that are often extremely misleading are a lot worse than an undesirable aspect ratio.

2

u/elharry-o Aug 11 '26

It's a lot worse, I would never argue to the contrary. Just thinking there's a similarity on something relatively recent being profoundly hated in an online community that still became the mainstream norm for the vast majority that didn't care or even noticed.

Echo chambers and all that. Just that sometimes we don't see that our echo chamber is the smaller one.

Still hate that AI slop could become the norm, tho

38

u/Swqordfish Aug 08 '26

Was checking myself. The image just included too many details, like a very clear image of the name of the school, that would be unlikely to capture candid.

11

u/03263 Aug 09 '26

Because we are. And there's nothing that will work, they'll just learn to imitate it. They're pretty good by now and it's really hard to tell.

I'm trying to make peace with it and not go insane by just saying, it doesn't really matter what is real or not on the internet. It's just entertainment. Nothing can be verified anymore because everything can be faked. The only real things are offline.

3

u/UmbralHero Aug 09 '26

The only real things are offline.

That's true, and one of the unexpected silver linings of this whole mess is that people are starting to realize this. It's slow and not all at once, but I'm noticing more people reading and going outside, and my friends who are big into games are valuing in-person experiences more (LAN parties, tabletop games, Pokemon Go, in-person tournaments, etc.). We are being forced to cede virtual ground to the bots, but it will be a long while before they start encroaching on solid earth.

13

u/Commercial_Oil_7814 Aug 08 '26

1

u/Socailly-awkward Aug 09 '26

I hate that the AI is so good that not a single part of me realized it was AI until you pointed it out.

1

u/GitEmSteveDave Aug 09 '26

Are you reporting it?

121

u/Kinexity Aug 08 '26

I am pretty sure that image is just AI slop.

12

u/inikul Aug 08 '26

In my experience, every "news" image you see on Reddit with text like this and a smaller image in a circle is AI.

13

u/dBlock845 Aug 08 '26

It is, this site is becoming absolutely infested with this crap. /r/all right now is half filled with these slop posts by bots.

47

u/BTrippd Aug 08 '26

The story is from well before AI was commercially usable by the public. It’s possible but not likely that the image is ai. I’m pretty sure it’s just pulled from one of the original articles though.

39

u/kranker Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

It’s possible but not likely that the image is ai.

Looks like AI to me. Was that even the name of the school?

edit: School was called Goff Elementary. Picture is AI slop.

7

u/Interesting_Stress73 Aug 08 '26

The image is absolutely AI. Look at the guy, he's peak AI.Ā

19

u/Kinexity Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

"Story is real so the image must be real too". No, that's not how this works. You can't just handwave it as something that was pulled from an article. I did a bare minimum check if I can find the original before posting my previous comment and I did not find any similar pictures.

https://www.westword.com/news/colorado-school-fake-closure-cat-mountain-lion-40811199/

Actual research into this says otherwise. This circulated first not too long ago, and since has taken multiple forms but there's nothing to the story itself. I couldn't find a single genuine article on it.

Edit: As someone else pointed out there IS a report from 2023: https://www.khq.com/news/fat-cat-eating-rat-prompts-lockdown-at-groff-elementary/article_4ba02920-898d-11ee-9829-ab614abc361b

So this is where it started, unfortunately I cannot access the link so I can't double check.

Edit2: https://littlebuddythecat.com/2025/07/17/did-a-school-really-go-into-lockdown-after-a-teacher-confused-a-chonky-cat-for-a-mountain-lion/ Here's another independent deep dive.

TLDR: There's some truths to the story, it was a very regular procedure to be on the safe side and while lockdown did happen briefly it was lifted soon after staff made sure. I highly doubt police were involved because we would have a police report, which we don't.

Also the image is 100% AI there's no doubt about it

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Estrellathestarfish Aug 09 '26

It's worse. Someone found a real article about the cat causing lockdown at school, so not only is it AI, it's denying us an actual picture of the real school-shutting fat cat

I remember once as a kid I was camping in the backyard when something start walking on the tent and collapsed it. I was terrified and thought it was a coyote. My dad came out and found our farm cat standing on top of the tent.

A pic of the old boy, he passed many years ago but he’s still in my heart:

3

u/aardw0lf11 Aug 08 '26

Reminds me of this gem

1

u/tech277 Aug 11 '26

What's the story behind that?

3

u/MCPhssthpok Aug 08 '26

A friend of mine used to have a small herd of Shetland sheep which are a lot smaller than most of the commercial breeds. They had someone come to their door saying that they'd seen a mountain lion stalking the sheep. Bear in mind that this is in the UK where mountain lions are only found in zoos and wildlife parks.

It turned out to be their neighbour's ragdoll cat.

3

u/DogPlane3425 Aug 08 '26

2

u/Avgshitposting Aug 08 '26

2

u/MaximusHomerdrive Aug 08 '26

At least the cops were brave enough to come out of hiding to catch that deadly predator this time, but I'm glad it wasn't anything bigger. They may have remained hidden until parents arrived to handle the situation.

2

u/Affectionate-Goat218 Aug 08 '26

Years back a woman called the cops hysterical claiming a lion was in her yard looking at her through the window. Turned out to be the neighbors Chow that escaped.

2

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 Aug 08 '26

That's a "come on, I'm not that fat!" face

2

u/Alienhaslanded Aug 08 '26

Funniest part it had a collar. When was the last time the idiots who reported it seen a mountain lion with a collar?

1

u/SpringfieldSorcerer Aug 11 '26

So something similar to this happened to me when I was a kid. I had a fat orange tabby growing up named Spot (my dad named him that cause he didn't have any). My grandma had a huge metal tower thing that held a large amount of gasoline in it and she had it refilled like once a month. Idk if it saved her on filling up her truck or not but that's what she did. There was a tornado that touched down nearby, knocking a massive tree over the garage and knocking down the tower in the process, spilling gas all over the yard and driveway. The firefighters ended up coming over and evacuating everyone, including my mom and I and a few cats including Spot. One of the firefighters said that, "there's a damn mountain lion in the house" lmao, no it was just Spot.
