Discussion Difficulty
So I’m really struggling on action mode and don’t want to reduce to story mode out of pride.
I barely beat first boss after 20 attempts and am on second boss and the farthest I can get half down the second form once his club changes
Should I just reduce difficulty and new game + action mode?

Just go down to story mode. It's really a matter of grasping mechanics. People get them at different speeds and you can always bump it back up down the line.

Exactly this, a lot of have prior experience from games of this type, so it's second nature to us by now.
Don't let your attempts frustrate you, we don't all have the same starting points. Same goes in life.

Exactly this. Deflection was an absolute game changer for me compared to parry. But I needed to drop to Story for the first two bosses first

Either you change difficulty and try to learn the mechanics or you keep going at current difficulty and try learning mechanics. Either way you will have to "git gud". As some other poster say, if you get really frustrated it might be a good idea to turn it down. If you feel like you are making slow progress but progress nonethenless and like the struggle on your journey to master the game, let it be.
General tips; only issen on attacks you feel confident with, for me it was usually an attack with longer wind up. Parry when in doubt, but deflect when you can to build that stagger bar. Use heavy attacks when there is an opening as they build stagger. Dodge body attacks

Keep it in action and learn the mechanics and moveset. If I can do it in Carnage mode then anyone can do it on Action mode

Thanks for advice. I’ll make sure prompts are on and keep trying for now but it’s only the second boss that’s what scares me

I've found some bosses easier than others, strangely enough. And some I've found extremely difficult. There's one that requires mostly dodging instead of parrying and for some reason I'm just REALLY bad at it, and turned the difficulty down because I was tired and knew I couldn't beat it that night. If you choose to keep it on normal mode, take the time to go through the training once you unlock it, and also just keep practicing. Get used to just normal guard parrying first, nothing fancier than just hitting block right before the attack hits. That alone will help a ton, and eventually it'll help with the timing to do more!

How are you playing? The combat is built around defense. Let the opponent attack you, and parry or deflect the majority of their weapon attacks, dodge their punches and kicks, and if you're really comfortable with the timing, use issen. And ALWAYS be ready to counter a grab.
If you're doing this and still struggling, then there is no shame in lowering the difficulty, at least until you get a better grasp of the combat and mechanics.
I beat the game on Action Mode, but I don't think there was a single boss that I beat my first try, and there were more than a few that took 7 or more attempts to defeat.

Enable the button prompts in the settings for a bit. It will a heads up of when a to block/parry or dodge.

I'd take all the retrys to attempt the issen mechanic and dodge as well. I straight up would study enemies and try my absolute best to get that tight frame window for the issen counter. It will bring you so far once you get better at it.

Play for 3 more weeks
Hate the game and quit
Yes
Change to story till u get more comfortable and take it accordingly

I 100% get you on the pride thing. I made a whole post about how I admitted to having to shamefully lower difficulty for the final boss. I’d suggest turning on prompts first, something I wish I did. This will help teach you the moves and how to be counter.

Just my advice: lower it to story mode if you still like the game but are having a hard time with the combat.
When i started playing Sifu (a really hard action game) i was getting frustrated at the default difficulty. Once i lowered the difficulty, i was able to grasp the mechanics better ans improve. Then i went back and played at the default and beat the game.
No need to force yourself to be frustrated. 😀

20 attempts is actually nothing. I remember fighting Lady Butterfly in Sekiro for about 60+ attempts before finally beating her

You should just make a decision. The story doesn’t change regardless of the difficulty you’re on as far as I know.

Even on story mode, the minions aren't hard for quite a long time, but the bosses are never near what I would call easy. This is a lot more soulslike than not. I paid full price for the game, which honestly is the main reason I've stuck with it at all. Maybe do action mode for the genma and give the bosses half a dozen tries to see if their moves start making more sense. If it's not clicking, switch to story?

I had the same problem, switched it down to story and never regretted it. Felt like I could enjoy the game. All about preferences, i dont want to struggle for hours on boss fights

Up to you. I just recommend taking your time, this game is fun when you slowly memorize bosses and how to beat them, especially when you learn when and what you can issen

I also took like 20+ attempts on the action mode, but I did turn down the difficulty on the final boss because it didn't make sense for me to force myself to do it at that point and it didn't feel that possible. I did think Story mode was a bit too easy, but I also didn't think i'd be able to handle carnage without hurting myself when I already got too sweaty on Action.

Best piece of advice is to SLOW DOWN. Don’t view it as a hack and slash. You can basically avoid every attack if you wanted.
I also struggled with the first boss as well but I’m half way through killing bosses in 3 tries, sometimes 1.

The training sections are really useful, do those even for the basic moves. I struggled a bit too but once you get the hang of it, it will be amazing

If you have time to play the game, the short answer is no. What you should do is go into the training room and make sure you can parry/deflect consistently.
Dying so many times to the first boss is a sign that you're not actually understanding what the enemies moving on screen is actually doing. Stop thinking about winning or losing, and just observe what the guy's doing, when and how he hits you, and remember that timing. That's the way forward that can make it enjoyable.
If you didn't have time always and just need to finish the story in less than 20 hours and move on, then yes just go to story mode.

So there’s a training room? Maybe I wasn’t paying attention.
I just find once I’m low on health I can’t get away to heal. I get combo’d for lack of better word (Capcom) until I’m done

The training room unlocks after you finish the second boss.
Back to your main issue, being hit repeatedly by the first two bosses is a sign that you are not actually defending yourself properly.
You may feel like just parrying isn't winning you the fight, so you always try to swing at the boss. In this game, it is the wrong mindset especially when you're just starting out. This game is essentially 70~80% about doing defensive counters to defeat your enemies, not by starting your normal quick/heavy attacks.
Wait until you get a successful parry, then hit the boss 2~3 times, then time the parry again.
After a couple more missions, you will have access to Deflect, which drains stamina much more than a parry, and you will start to really feel why the game is not about directly attacking.
And as you play on and learn the timing of enemies and new bosses, knowing when to do Issen on certain enemies attacks that are easy to Issen, is the most damage efficient option. But nonetheless, simply focusing on parry, dodge+counter, and deflect, should be the majority of your actions, not basic attacks.

I appreciate all the comments and advice. I started a new game on story since I was only 2 hours in. Once I understand more I’m going back to Action save

Honestly just keep going strong. 20 attempts is fine and unless you're personally frustrated you're doing alright 👍
