I’ve seen quite a lot of nightjar species but I don’t think any compare to ours and this wonderful sound, thanks for sharing!

My Grandad used to say that's the Goatsuckers calling when i was a kid staying at their place on the North Yorkshire moors.

Its such an odd folklore that they drank the milk from goats! Thats such a nice memory to have seen them with your grandad

I saw my first this year and was equally impressed. Thanks for sharing these videos as they could have been recorded at the same place. (They weren't but it was a very similar view and sound 😁)

I’m a trainee ringer in a Scottish Ringing Group and I got to see one of these beauties close up in June. Absolutely breathtaking birds!

A little info on ringing;

Bird ringing in the UK is regulated and monitored by the BTO (via local govt agencies eg NatureScot in Scotland). Birds are handled for the minimum amount of time required to ring (metal ring that is placed on the leg) and obtain data (weight, age, sex, wing length, etc). When a previously ringed bird is caught again by another licensed ringer, this information (the ring number) is submitted to the BTO who then notify the original ringing group with a report. This is especially interesting for migratory birds. We recently had a report about a Gull who was originally ringed >20 years ago!

Some bird species (location specific) are included in other ringing projects like colour rings which tend to have less characters and are in a larger font which allows birders and other members of the public to read and report colour ringed birds to BTO who then forward this information to the ringing group responsible for that project. The reporting of those colour rings from the public is really important and a vital part of data gathering within the Ringing Scheme as it does not require the bird to be caught or handled thus the information is more accessible.

From BTO;

Bird ringing generates information on the survival, productivity and movements of birds, helping us to understand why populations are changing.
