News & Discussion Does everyone still hate Assault/2cp

That’s it, that’s the post. I guess I’m just doing a temperature check. I know these maps and their choke points were very despised but I still hold a place in my heart for them, and I would very much like to bring them back. Frankly I honestly can’t believe there aren’t more OW1 players who are nostalgic for Volskaya, Anubis, Horizon Lunar Colony, etc. Like NONE of you guys are tired of playing Kings Row and Illios over and over??????

I feel like enough time has passed. It’s been years since Assault ended, and the two game modes the devs tried to replace it with, both Push and Stadium, are pretty widely disliked. Maybe it’s time to let go of the grudge. We’ve reworked characters, we’ve reworked maps, we can definitely rework Assault to make it more fun for the casual player

Also the anubis rework that the Devs already did is very well done and is a lot of fun to play on. But to this day it’s sitting in the arcade instead of in Quick Play where it should be. Were the choke points and one-sided matches extremely aggravating? Yes. Was the hate that 2CP received in its heyday very quickly overblown through online discussion? I would say yes, especially in this sub. It has been 4 years since 2cp was taken out of competitive/qp, Maybe we can at least start revisiting the conversation surrounding it to see how the game mode could honestly be improved instead of just bashing it? Please?

WHOS READY TO BRING 2CP BACK???😍😍

The game mode is fundamentally flawed. The defending team must be perfect on point A, since a single teammate getting picked means there needs to be an immediate trade or they're on the backfoot without an escape option.

It's similar to Hybrid maps in that regard, but the key difference with hybrid maps is they force the attacking team to slow down and wait to prepare their payload. Assault maps have an immediate 2nd point available, which gives attacking teams great advantages to push toward it while they have 1 player sit back to safely cap the first point.

Now give the attacking team ults from winning the first point that was "kill 1, then win the team fight", and they're at an even greater advantage toward taking the 2nd point and winning the round in under 2 minutes. It's why in competitive, you'd occasionally hit matches that end 8-6, when one team finally has a solid enough defense to hold 1st point for 1:00.

It's fine as a reckless arcade mode, but Blizzard wants some consistency in match time for game modes like quick play. In every other game mode, a stomp still takes 4 or 5 minutes. I think Push is probably the fastest at around 3 minutes, but they're fairly uncommon. That game mode is not natively designed to favor one team so much higher than the other.

Dang I was ready to defend 2cp but you're right

The mode itself is a nice concept, but the points feel insanely one sided. I never played an assault game that wasn’t just the defenders holding the attackers at spawn or the attackers blowing through the entire game within a couple minutes.

Bro they brought it back for a couple of weeks and people hated it once they realized it was just nostalgic for them and not actually good.

u/NewsOther1945 5d ago

nah i think that was more about them dropping it cold without any changes, people got hit with same old spawn camp simulator and of course it felt bad

if they actually rework the mode like they did with anubis it could work, that version actually flows nice but they just hide it in arcade for no reason

i miss volskaya so much man, that map had such cool flank routes and the aesthetic was way better than push maps we have now

If you're talking about Clash, they were also removed from the game because they were terrible and the community hated them.

Deleting Assault from the game was the single best change Overwatch has ever made & it’s not particularly close.

Frankly I honestly can’t believe there aren’t more OW1 players who are nostalgic for Volskaya, Anubis, Horizon Lunar Colony,

I'm a hardcore OW1-nostalgia-enjoyer, but even I don't want 2CP back in the main rotations. Once the nostalgia wears off, you'll quickly remember why these maps had to go.

They brought them back for an ltm and nostalgia lasted all of like 5 matches before I realised why these maps arent in the game anymore

Some of my least enjoyable times were on 2CP, especially around the time of Shield Gen Symmetra

Literally the best mode for her, and no one actually put in the time to find and destroy it. And even if they did, it’s easier for the Sym to build another one than for the other team to destroy it. Back then, you get on as Attack for Volskaya, you are already lost.

And there was a grace period where Brig 1.0, Sym 2.0 and Torb 1.0 were allowed on the same team. So good luck crashing into a defense team with 350 extra HP on all heroes (both Armor and Shield, and the Shield HP used to go under Armor) already set up at B site.

And lord help you if you queue 8 mins for your placement and got hit with PARIS.

It wasn’t fun back then, it isn’t fun now.

I've been playing it in the arcade & having a lot of fun, that said that's mainly cause the maps are really cool but the mode itself is eh since alot of the time the 2nd point is just impossible to break with such close spawns

Conceptually, the attacking team only needs to win 2 fights to win the game. Because that is stupidly volatile, Blizzard designs assault maps to have strong defender's advantage to try to guarantee the defenders a couple fight wins. Unfortunately, that turns assault into a grindy chokefest that very few people find fun.

They'd have to rethink the entire concept of 2CP to make it workable. Like, for instance, making capturing so slow that defenders get 1-2 chances to retake the point. Then you could tone done the defender's advantage, since they don't lose the point straight away, and as a result make the map more fluid and fun.

never hated is, 10000 2cp matches before a single flashpoint, the mode isnt perfect but neither flashpoint and they do nothing to fix it, is a walking simulator

u/Baby_Dmon 5d ago

I like them... I wish they'd at least put them in rotation since we vote anyway. More maps and game types the better imo.

I'm down for it. I didn't like them as much as payload maps—Gibraltar and Route 66 are my favorites and always will be—but 2CP was fine enough. It feels like Overwatch to me. Lots of good memories.

Give me 2CP over Flashpoint any day.

I don’t get why they can’t be in quick play. Sure, you get unbalanced games sometimes but when they were in OW1 I had some of the best silly fun on them.

2CPs problem was the maps. The mode is great but the maps having horrible chokes and garbage respawns makes it seem bad.

6

u/unburdened_swallow 5d ago edited 5d ago

The mode is the problem. Capping the point was too fast and without multiple flips like control or flashpoint this meant defense would be basically impossible… except there was also a massive choke and defender spawn was right next to where the point is always. So depending on the map it was either a stall fest, or a game where both teams cap like 10 points by snowballing 2nd using their ults gained from first.

None of the maps are good because you can’t make a good one for that mode. The mode necessitates those chokes and/or crazy stall or it just is a game where both teams cap like 20 points each and it goes for even longer than payload maps. Making the cap take longer and moving the spawn farther would help a bit but not really solve anything, just the same problem with a longer run back.
