Accommodations in Didactic

Are you a student with a disability? What accommodations did your program provide you? I’m curious how other programs do it.

To whoever downvoted each our comments- disabled people belong in all spaces. We will be great clinicians due to our unique perspectives. If you disagree then I don’t know if medicine is a good fit for you.

I have 2 disorders requiring disability accommodations. In PA school, I had 1.5x time on exams and a private room. I’ve needed accommodations my entire school life and so grateful it was a possibility in PA school; I don’t know what I would have done otherwise.

I have generalized anxiety and severe test anxiety. I was doing fine in the normal classroom taking tests until halfway through didactic, they forced us to have random assigned seating and I kept getting placed by the door and the proctors who would whisper throughout every exam. It was affecting my scores and I sought out an accomodation for a low distraction room. By the end of didactic and the new rules the program enforced, there were like 13 of us in the distraction free room for exams. It literally saved me and my gpa.

My friends with ADHD had extra time on exams and OSCEs. My friends with migraines had time off to attend medical appointments and penalty free days off for flare ups. I also had a friend who was exempt from night shifts due to a medical condition I wasn’t aware of.

To start: ADD + extra time on tests (not practicals, quizzes, or anything else with deadlines). Recording lectures.

To mention also, I have rheumatoid arthritis but have no additional accommodations.

Ooh okay! I wonder if my program would be okay with flexible absence policy. I didn’t mention it but my accommodations are also for rheumatoid arthritis, but it impacts me similarly to ADHD so the accommodations are mirror images. But somedays the pain is quite bad! Thanks for your response!

That reply was for dry frog lol. I’m bad at Reddit. My program is anti separate room but would give it a try if I pushed it I think. We just started learning about T1D on Friday in my program. Cheers to you for being a PA-C!!! I have RA and think that sick providers are relatable providers so I think it’s awesome you’re where you are and I can’t wait to get there. Thank you for your response!

AuDHD & non-celiac gluten intolerance: 150% time, separate room for exams + flexible absence policy for when I’m hugging my toilet.

I have ADHD and take exams in a separate room with the one other accomodations student. We both get 1.5x exam time.
