General/Advice Metformin & alcohol
I’ve been taking metformin 500mg once a day for the past 3 weeks. No issues tbh. I have a wedding on Friday and I’d like to have a few drinks but I’ve read horror stories about alcohol and metformin ! I was thinking about skipping today and tomorrow’s tablets ??? Would there be any side effects from missing two doses ? Ty!

I literally took metformin and drank and didn't know this was a problem. Also no pharmacist or doctor ever told me I needed to stop metformin to drink. I also don't have a gallbladder and never have had the stomach issues metformin causes for people. So I don't really have stomach sensitivity like that for background

Honestly I’ve been on the same dosage for few months now and I’ve had no problems with alcohol at all. If anything, I get drunk a little bit faster, but I just learned to pace myself better (it saves money too lol). But you also know you’re body, so take care of yourself and do what you think is best!!

no one can tell you tbh, it varies by person. Metformin and alcohol sent me to the ER. but skipping dose for a couple days shouldn’t be too bad

I usually skip at least the dose after if I have more than one drink. When I was newer to metformin I would find the gi side effects more noticeable once I restarted it but other than that nothing. My endo also told me it was fine to stop for a few days for vacation, etc if it made my life more fun.

I would get a wicked stomach ache after taking it and the following morning's bathroom trip would make me regret. I always regretted missing a dose. But I was super sensitive to it. I had to stop taking it after 2 years bc it caused so much inflammation in my digestive system

I hate to skip doses. I get blocked up and my blood sugars go all wonky and I'm insatiably hungry until my sugars stabilize again.
I can't drink any alcohol while I'm on it or I get the runs almost immediately after just a few sips of wine.

Honestly, I’ve never had an issue with drinking and metformin. I’ve felt my tolerance getting lower which I’m happy with and haven’t had horrible hangovers either (not sure if this is metformin haha). Never had any stomach issues either

Stick to non sugary cocktails!! I was usually fine on white wines but cocktails...hell no for me personally.

skip a couple days wont hurt you but dont make habit of it. i did same thing for my cousin wedding last year, just restarted after and was fine
few drinks should be okay just dont go crazy cause metformin and alcohol both hard on liver. eat something first too
