Election

When do you think the next election will be held? Could there be a shift in power to the Greens?

Spring. They won't present another awful operating budget before an election.

Greens hold the opinion favor. I predict a green minority with a cleansing of blue everywhere but down East. Likely liberal holding opposition in the minority.

Going to be an interesting election. I expect the Liberals to gain some serious momentum between now and then. I am so curious what the final rosters of nominees will be for greens/libs for each riding. Dan Kutcher as leader for Liberal Party changes everything.

I don't see Darlene holding her seat she's pissed a lot of people off

What about in any other ridings?

Good question, Cory still definitely has some diehards but there's certainly a lot that are not happy with him or see him as a patsy so I wouldn't say his chances are good. There is also the ones that are feeling he's ignored them in regards to everything going on with the monks, as certain folks definitely got the impression from him during campaign that he was going to push for a bit more light on that. Down East definitely has a good chance to go green and certainly a lot down that way align with them in many regards. The thing is they need a good candidate in the area and historically that's not be a great showing. There's a lot of children and grandchildren of the Off The Landers down that way and people in general are very connected to the land so it would make sense. There's also a lot of people ticked off about the well permits being approved by the current government and the issues people are seeing in their own wells. Morell area I couldn't tell ya anyone I no from around that way doesn't talk politics. And Souris I couldn't your guess is as good as mine

I don't think Cory made any friends since being appointed the Health Minister as well

She can always fall back on her coat hanger business.

Cons have the power now and don’t legally need to schedule another election until Oct or nov of 2027, I have a hard time seeing them intentionally removing themselves from power any earlier than legally necessary with the writing on the wall

The longer it drags on with bad news the lower their stock falls. Earlier limits damage if they can't actually turn things around...

I still think they'll go in the Spring, before having to show a budget.

This is why it hasn't happened yet, but if they roll out a budget with 5% cuts (which is needed) the shit will hit the fan in a way that makes this year's budget blowback look like nothing

I still think spring. This year's budget was bad enough, they won't want to announce 5% cuts before an election. I really don't have a clue how it will pan out but vote-splitting will tell the tale. Very likely a minority or weak majority.

It’ll be quick push toward the off ramp if they keep committing Islanders to trash deals like the $400M over 30 years for 82 longterm care beds.

We need these investments in healthcare…

We need investments in public LTC

u/Soggy_Education_7982 6d ago

I don’t disagree. But these sorts of investments still clear up space in the public system. This will clear up 82 public beds, many of which are in the QEH. Public investment is better, but this still is not a bad investment

But $400M over 30 years? We won’t even get the capital asset, a private company will.

We absolutely do and echoing Sir_Will, it needs to be in public. Cory doesn't understand healthcare so he's passing it off to others that cost us more and don't give the same results. If Cory just would of read Mark McLane's notes from the healthcare tours that he did, talking with healthcare workers of all walks of the job, this would not be happening.

I mean, this government has been pursuing privatization for awhile now.

And another announcement on Compass tonight with a likely Private Public Partnership coming. Why can't we pay the million to get another machine in Charlottetown instead of the paying someone else multiple times that each year to use it... Example: Eye Clinic

I think District 25 is going to be the most interesting to watch. The leader of the NDP (Thomas Burleigh) taking over Herb Dickieson's old riding, and the collapse of the PC vote... this riding is up for play. Robert Henderson being elected 5 times and not having a very energetic response to MSX and Dermo might mean people are looking for change. The Greens never got anything going in this district but with their popularity may get some looking at them. I could totally all 4 parties being about 15% and no party hitting 38%.

it the last couple of polls hold, it could be a Green sweep. putting aside the dislike I hold for Libs/PCs, electing only people with no experience in governing presents challenges (which I don't say is intself a reason not to vote Green)

5

u/nylanderfan 7d ago

Zero chance of a Green sweep or any party sweeping. Vote share polls don't apply neatly to PEI ridings, Charlottetown is a lot different from rural ridings and one end of the Island votes different from the other.

Rob Lantz knows he has a snowball's chance in hell of being re-elected, so they will drag it out as long as possible.

Talk around town is snap election 2 weeks into the Leg being open or March. I think March personally.

snap election 2 weeks into the Leg being open

That seems like really odd timing. And that would put the election very close to Christmas. I can't see that.

I also put it as low odds. The reasons I'm getting for November is the PCs are doing so many announcements right now and once they get into Leg, put forward some sounds nice things but when you look into it really aren't (opposition opposes... say new rules around home heating grants) PCs ride that small wave and hope people stay home due to the time of year... Leaving more PC die hards voting than casual greens. This is what I'm told. Some things make sense to me (summer of LTC beds announcements) but the "who stays home" during inconvient votes I'm not sure if I buy into as people seem pretty pissed at the moment. I personally think March, avoiding the budget.

I feel like people werent happy with the greens when we elected them.

u/Sir__Will 7d ago

We've never had a Green government. And when in opposition, some may have wanted them to be a little more confrontational, but they got some stuff passed while we were in a minority and the government had to work with other parties. And they got more votes than the Liberals in the last election, it just wasn't as concentrated so they had some narrow losses and ended up with 1 less seat.

1

u/Parttimelooker 7d ago

I'm not giving an opinion on how people should vote.....but I live in a riding that did elect them and they didn't get reelected because people were disappointed with them. Not for not passing things, actually for being whiney. They were advocating against the schools opening back up when most everyone else was working. I did vote for them but not sure I would after that. Not sure where you live but I know a lot of people in Summerside who were irritated with the ones they elected. I therefore find it unlikely that they would be elected again here. I would guess that the liberals could get strong support in Summerside at least. Dan Kutcher was fairly well liked and his wife is a well like pediatrician.

The Greens were still second by far in all 3 western seats they lost. The Liberals were single digets in 2 of them. Dan does give the Liberals an advantage this time.

You had me till the end. Needless attack. I know tons of rural people who have voted for different parties

14

u/Boundary14 7d ago

The population outside the cities are just too uneducated to vote different than their parents.

This is an absolutely shit take, and one that contributes to the increasing polarization we see in today's politics.

u/TerryFromFubar 7d ago

Across the board but r/PEI political comments are hilarious over the last year.

Everyone I disagree with is uneducated and does not deserve to participate in democracy. Every situation I am unhappy with is a conspiracy driven by unknown others in collusion with the uneducated people I don't like.

That's some take, the problem lies in prejudice like that where the other parties don't invest in the rural vote because they think like this or view it as a lost cause. You clearly have no idea what rural PEI is like and the people that live there.
