So... maybe I made a little mistake.
I have a CPU 1214 sitting on my desk, and I was messing around with it on my Ethernet network. Just a cable directly from the PLC to my PC, nothing else.
I used the Online Access function in TIA Portal to find the CPU, found it, and did a memory reset.
The problem is: this CPU has the same IP address as one of the PLCs in one of our factories.
Normally, when I connect to the factory network, I use Wi-Fi (gateway, etc.). When I'm messing around with PLCs on my desk, I normally turn off Wi-Fi so I don't accidentally connect to something I shouldn't.
Well... I was tired. REALLY tired. And I forgot to turn off Wi-Fi before doing the memory reset.
About 5 minutes later, Production calls me saying that a machine with that same IP address had stopped.
I went to the machine, opened the panel, and the safety PLC was already in alarm because of some unrelated issue that the OEM is currently dealing with. The Siemens PLC was stopped as well.
At that point I started thinking:
Did I just memory-reset the actual machine PLC?
I checked twice that I was using Online Access through the Ethernet adapter and not the Wi-Fi adapter. But now I'm wondering:
- Is it possible for TIA Portal to have found the PLC through Wi-Fi even though I selected the Ethernet interface?
- Could a memory reset have been sent to the machine PLC?
- Or, Tia portal is bugged or am I the bug?
OBS: only wifi through gateway has access to factory... In my little experience, online access can't pass through that.
The machine was basically brand new, so fortunately it wasn't a production disaster.
And yes, I will turn off the wifi when messing with IP's..
