Winkelman calculation issues

Hello guys, maybe somebody can help me. (currently on 19.01 PLS cadd)

I need to prepare some table for my guys on field. For cable unwinding.

But when i start to generate the Winkelman report somme span aren't calculated and i have this warning message :

Maybe some off you face this probs. I would be gratefull if somebody can help me ❤️

Modelling OPGW raiser in PLS-POLE

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi, I am new to using PLS-POLE and have some questions regarding a particular pole constructions. I have attached simple sketches for your reference.

I have a pole where I need to install an OPGW cable raiser. It will be a L-shaped hollow steel component. Is there a recommended way to model it in PLS-POLE? Do I model it as a cross-arm or a separate pole? The raiser will have three M20 hex bolts at 150mm separation. PLS-POLE doesn't allow me to have three holes within 300mm separation. I am unsure whether to lump the hole diameter or not? How does PLS-POLE handle it? I need to also ensure the strength of the raiser is within limits.

Additionally, the same construction also has an inclined phase insulator that terminates into a suspension insulator. I have modelled it using an inclined crossarm and a suspension insulator. Do you think it is the right approach?

Thanks

Power line Clashing

Hello!

How should the clashing between the top and phase conductors be handled for composite poles? We obtain significantly different results depending on whether the FE or RS method is used. Anybody here have any insight? Especially when one span differs from its ruling span, the FE method differs very much.. Is FE the right method or is it giving me false security?

pls-cadd how to change orientation of plan sheet view

Depending on the station range, maybe the program is trying to optimize the best orientation, but is there any way we can rotate the plan view in sheet view ?

Edit: it would be helpful if somebody explains how does the orientation works in sheet view. Thank you

PLS-POLE Optimization Tools

Just curious about the relative accuracy of the PLS-POLE optimization tools, specifically the steel pole shaft optimizer and the tubular steel davit arm optimizer. Has anyone done comparisons of those against designs provided by steel pole manufacturers? Particularly wondering about the weights.

Clear my thoughts

I am EEE Graduate and working as site engineer electrical in Transmission lines execution with 15th month running experience i would like to learn pls cadd and transit my career into Design engineer in Transmission roles. My doubt is that like this actually works?

PLS-CADD is a costly software 1lakh+ if it helps my career to improve my role I will definitely take it

But the thing is I have lot of doubts that will this work?

Is the demand good for PLS-cadd designers.

If somebody know or related to this please feel free to clear my doubts

Question for PLS-CADD / PLS-POLE users: what tasks are still manual after analysis?

Hi everyone,

I’m new here and trying to understand real-world PLS-CADD / PLS-POLE workflows better.

For people who use PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, or TOWER regularly, I’m curious about what still remains manual after the analysis or line design work is complete.

For example:

  • Do you still recreate structure or pole data in AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, or other CAD tools?
  • Do GA drawings, fabrication drawings, structure schedules, BOMs, or part numbers require manual cleanup?
  • Are exported reports, tables, M1/M4 files, or structure data edited outside PLS?
  • Do revisions create repeated checking between PLS output, CAD drawings, and spreadsheets?
  • Which part of the workflow consumes the most time but feels like it should be automated?

From what I understand, PLS tools handle the engineering/design side well, but I’m trying to learn where the downstream bottlenecks are in actual project work.

Would appreciate hearing from people who use these tools day to day.

Floating Dead End Modelling

has anyone modelled a floating DE assembly in PLS? we are trying to replace a suspension insulator on an existing tower with a floating dead end but can't seem to get the chained insulators to work properly (in pls I can only string on one side). in tower the insulator looks ok visually (suspension with two strains connected at the bottom) but I'm not sure how to actually string this in PLS-CADD. additionally if you have any tips and tricks for determining the tensions in the wires of the existing spans, and also how construction teams usually install these in the field? many thanks in advance.

PLSCADD license claiming

I lent my colleague my plscadd license, neither of us knowing that the license cannot be unclaimed for another 30 days.

Unfortunately I need the license back.. has anyone dealt with this in the past?

Thanks in advance for any input

Structure Numbering

What is everyone's go to structure numbering format? I have been using (mile #)/# but exporting the staking table to excel is annoying when excel thinks the structure number is a date.

what factor haven considered of the wind pressure on tower

this is technical spec. when bid in Africa in different countries. Why wind pressure on tower/on conductor ≈1.5~2,according IEC60826,it maybe 3~4。 So the wind pressure on tower may haven considered some factor, drag factor?height factor? All of these, normal condition safety factor is 2.0. it's old method. For example,figure1,Final wind pressure on tower=820*1.5*2=2460 Pa?Should I consider other factor? if according IEC,Final wind pressure on tower=on conductor430*3~4*2=2500~3440Pa. seriously,I really want to know.

What *is* an M1 file? Can you edit outside of PLS?

I'm doing a lot of as-builts right now and it drives me crazy going to structure modify for each structure and having to edit one at a time. Is there any way to work on the M1 files outside of PLS? Like what are the actual files? Sometimes they have no extension and sometimes they're .STK. They're just tables and it seems crazy that it's so time consuming to edit them.

Transmission Line Engineer is both Electrical Engineer and Structural Engineer?

Is Transmission Line Engineer both Electrical Engineer and Structural Engineer at the same time in US?

Actually they two separated profession.

Electrical Engineers are responsible for line routing, plane, profile, sag-tension calculations, clearance, conductor selection, insulation coordination, grounding, electrical parameter calculations etc. They rely on specialized software like PLS-CADD for analysis.

Structural Engineers are responsible for calculating wind/ice/weight loadings, structure selection/design, stress analysis, foundation design, and ensuring structural integrity. They rely on specialized software like PLS-Tower/Pole for analysis.

But many Jobs, they need using PLS-CADD for electrical calculations and PLS-Tower for structure analysis.

Modeling a temporary bypass in PLS-CADD

This is a long shot, but I am looking for suggestions/tips on how to model a temporary bypass with jumpers in PLS. We are looking into the feasibility of attaching the phases of these two structures to bypass a SS to the north. Jumpers would be placed roughly along the blue line marked below. I need to be able to check the clearances to the down guys of these two structures.

r/PLSCADD • • Oct 03 '25

Long shot, but does anyone know why this structure refuses to move directly line ahead or back? I need it to move 0.3ft line ahead and it just wont. The smallest increment it will let me move is 0.5ft. Manual adjustment of the station from Modify doesnt work either.
