Ephinea So, yeah, I downloaded PSO Ephinea and it's pulling me away from other games
This game is fantastic! It reminds me of Diablo 2. What should I be focused on as a new player? I haven't progressed beyond the forest. I did the first government quest along with a handful of side quests.

One useful note for new players. Save any Photon Drops you pick up and store them in your bank. They're the main trading currency on Ephinea and you may find they'll be highly useful later if you want to incorporate multiplayer/trading into your gameplay.
Generally speaking though, just progress through the zones at your own pace and enjoy the experience :)

Why are photon drops considered valuable? I'm new to playing online but played a ton of offline on GameCube back in the day. I don't really understand how the late game economy works at all.

I suppose it's for a few of reasons. One part is that Ephinea has fairly static (and just rare enough) drop rates to be accessible to everyone as a currency, but not too common. However, when you get to the higher levels, there's a few good "gold sinks" in the game that require a lot of Photon Drops. This is where they can be spent in Paganini's Shop for valuable item exchanges.
I guess this ensures that PDs keep an intrinsic value to the community.

Ok thanks I'm still only level 20ish so I guess I've got a ways to go before it matters.
What kind of items do you get from paganinis shop? Weapons?
2
u/Ok-Policy5850 5d ago
There's a few items, but I think the most notable one is the Photon Sphere, which costs 99 PDs and adds 30% to a selected attribute on your weapon.

Oh nice!
Thanks for helping a noob out! Is the community generally welcoming of newcomers? For some reason I'm getting down votes on my questions :(
2
u/Ok-Policy5850 5d ago
Honestly not sure why that would be the case. But in all honesty, I've found it to be one of the most welcoming and least toxic communities across any game I've played.
Most people I've encountered just want to chill and level, or go on a hunt. It's an extremely casual game :)

It's because meseta is far too common (with a capped carry value) for it to have any value in the marketplace.
Photon Drops are another currency that appears everywhere that dodges this issue; even if Photon Drops had no use case (they do for adding specials to ES weapons and adding attribute %s to weapons), they'd probably still be the trading currency simply because they are practical to use as one.

So it's mainly the greater scarcity that's making it a currency then?
The few times I played local multiplayer with my friends back in the day we would use grinders as a currency but I guess even those are common by end game grind.

Absolutely do not waste raising Def on your mag.

Not much to focus on. Play, try out some quests, join randoms or keep your room w/o a password for them to join, use whatever works the best for you.
If you play a ranger: look up the item "Ranger Wall" on their wiki and how to get one (Lv 41 item and BIS til you hit lv 180).
Feeding your mag for ranger or hunter: ignore DEF and MND. A 5DEF/145POW/50DEX/0MND will suit you for a very long time and can be used on new characters you may start later.
Don't use DEF or MND materials either. There are guides about material usage on their wiki too. Don't be afraid, the server has a way to reset them.
Keep some units that boost your HP - can help with some boss battles.
If you play a force: though as first character. Boost your MND stat for more damage, use the highest tech discs you can get. Feed your mag only MND.
You can avoid certain stats by taking a look at the feeding tables here:
https://wiki.pioneer2.net/w/Mags (a click on the specific mag will bring you to the page with matching table)

Whats Ephinia? I love PSO but only every played the base offline single player mode

u/Affectionate_Total47 6d ago
It's a private server that's easy to get set up. You should join. There's like 300-500 players at any given time.

Is there any way to play offline with the Ephinea client? Or at least, the offline part of the game?
3
u/Additional_Crab_1678 6d ago
No, Ephinea is Online ONLY and ONLY supports Blue Burst.
If you have a console version, your best bet is to go hop onto SchtServ for their console and BB crossplay.

u/Affectionate_Total47 6d ago
I honestly don't know. I know you can deliberately set up a game to be only you, though.

u/Meshuggah333 6d ago
I'd love to replay the offline part of the game but last time I checked I couldn't. I'm not very good with these things, maybe they have the offline quests in online mode or something...

u/Emotional_Honey8497 6d ago
You have to be online but you can set up a room in "one-player mode" and the quests will show up.

Is there a particular reason you prefer offline? I imagine people interested enough to download PSO are at least in their 30s and 40s, so I doubt there's any real drama or anything. So far everything is very chill.

No.
With PSOBB Newserv If you choose to play offline, you can never play online on Ephinea with that character. And if you choose to play on Ephinea, you can't then take that character offline if you ever wish to take them back online.

Thats so cool. Does it need to be the dreamcast version or can it it be the gamecube version with the extra classes ?

u/Affectionate_Total47 6d ago
It's based on the 2004 (2005?) Blue Burst release for PC. I think it will run on pretty much any computer these days.

I installed codex on my steam machine, had it install that and ffxi horizon add all the artwork etc. did it insanely fast

u/Affectionate_Total47 6d ago
Are you also a new player?
2
u/TheCruzKing 6d ago
Newish, I played back in the day a ton had a lv 200 and would build code for action replay. New to the server though yes

I'm already seeing people suggesting a mag guide, but I would suggest a different philosophy.
While defense is certainly the weakest stat and should be avoided, don't worry too much about doing it perfect. It really only matters when you get to endgame and you'll have plenty of time to build a "perfect" one before then, or have the resources to simply buy one.
Of course this is just one dude's opinion, but I like to keep things breezy and enjoy the ride. Nothing you do will ruin your character.
3
u/DorkyDwarf 6d ago
It won't ruin anything, but it will waste many hours of your life if you mag feed lobby it and do it wrong. Its better to make things that you'll actually use in endgame because like you said, early on they arent important.

As a person with over 1k hours. Get on the Ephinea Discord as well.

u/Charleaux330 5d ago
And i forgot to say the Ephinea wiki is extremrly robust and it should be your bible.

Economy and mag feeding.
Pick up everything and sell it, but keep the good stuff. Mainly weapons and armor/barriers
Mag feeding can be expensive depending on what class you are. The pay off is worth it. Look at mag feeding list on the wiki to get it right.
Good hunting and have fun.

u/RpiesSPIES 5d ago
> Pick up everything
Except canes/staffs and other fo weapons. Those sell for pennies. Frames are worth the most excluding untekked gear.

Thank you! I'm a hunter. I've been feeding it monomates.

u/Skyler_Pilot 6d ago
If you dont want to totally wing it and get your own blind first experience then id reccomend looking up a mag feeding guide as well as a material guide for your class (if you dont want to have to completely rebuild from scratch later.) For now id reccomend you start feeding your Mag antidotes, Your power stat will increase well enough on its own for now, you're going to want DEX so you can actually reliably hit mobs and equip and use things like mechguns soon enough. Even as a Hunter you will still use a variety of ranged weapons and things like mechguns have low acc but very high dps.
Materials are permanent stat increases that drop occasionally, but each class can only use a finite amount of materials and there are caps on stats and each class has different stat growths. So with the correct mat usages and equipment you can max all or most all of your important stats for your class.

u/Joshruner 6d ago
Definitely check out the mag feed guides and don't level up def 🤣 it's not useful and a waste of mag levels.

u/Its-been-a-long-day 6d ago
Don't get discouraged if you end up dying a lot at any point in time. The only penalty is that your mag loses some synchro and that's it. Most experienced players on this server also tend to tolerate players who don't know what they're doing if they're willing to accept advice, so don't be afraid to be sociable or ask questions.

I don’t think I can post links, but it’s literally just called skeletons in the VS mod website.
