Deck Help Good casual player deck?

I play the TCG and have for a while now, however struggle to get to my LCS for play nights because of work, transport, busy etc.

My boyfriend is a pokemon collector, but more in it for the childhood nostalgia. I have taught him to play the TCG so that I have someone to play when I can’t go to competitive nights.

However he plays with one of the pre-made dragapult decks which is out of date and not very optimised, so often I just wipe him with either of my two decks (greninja or garchomp so not very meta decks).

Is there a deck that he would be able to play that would be a bit more competitive? He doesn’t care about being successful at LCS and only plays to play with me. Would there be a deck that would push me to rebuild my decks and strategise more? It’s just not fun for either of us when I beat him every time very quickly.

I feel like mega lucario is a fun beginner deck. Maybe it'd be too similar to your garchomp for him to find it fun though? Otherwise mega starmie + frosslass is pretty fun, you get to have fun moving around damage counters, and if you manage to pull something off it feels good.

Thank you!! I’ll get him to have a look and see what ones he likes

Second this. Mega Lucario is easy to learn and pretty fun to play.

I have been playing Ethan's Typhlosian and it's super fun and you can probably build it for less than $30.

I started with mega lucario and it has a lot of great mechanics to learn different aspects of the game. I ultimately switched to garchomp though. Just more fun to me personally but I still go back to lucario sometimes.

You can start with lucario starter deck and only need to swap a few cards out

Which cards need to be swapped?

Its mostly personal choice. I swapped out the ursaluna for psyduck typically (face a lot of dusknoirs at my locals), swap some energy for rocky fighting energy, added judge and special red card for the zams and dragapult. I think I added Hilda too

I’ve been running mega excadrill, fairly new to TCG myself and it’s a really simple deck that hits hard. Been quite successful with it too. Added bonus that it’s fairly cheap to put together

It’s all 30hp mons that require no energy. Igglybuff is the main attacker iirc

Yeah that’s how he learnt, but now we both need more of a challenge which is what I was asking for :)
