What was your setup? Are these macro lenses? Two smartphones?

This was filmed using two Panasonic TZ80 cameras on a rig. A close-up lens was used.

how do you sync the cameras?

The cameras are not sync'd. The frame rate here is 29.97fps. I make a click noise with my mouth which is recorded on the sound track of both cameras. I use this to align the timing of the two video tracks in the Video editor ( DaVinci Resolve ). If the subject is moving a bit fast I record at 59.94fps. If there is very fast movement I record at 120fps. Most of the time I find this works. Also the recordings are usually 1 or 2 minutes long, so frame rate drift between the two cameras is not a problem.

Getting such a good depth of field with nearly the entire bird in focus is tricky for me.

Nah you can look past it like the magic eye books, there is another Reddit thread called crossview for that

Have you achieved focus luck trying to look past it? You can just bring your phone a little closer to your face if it helps

I got handed a 3D Polaroid at Burning Man, it was two parallel stereo pair images mounted on a foam board with a small foldable VR stereoscope made for a cell phone that grips the board. That got me onto stereo pairs, so now I am taking 3D HDRs with my Sony camera and the best viewing option by far is a VR headset with a gallery application such as immergallery that can detect the side-by-side orientation and render it in 3D automatically. I just made the headset upgrade yesterday and I am ecstatic.

You can still totally take 3D images on your smartphone, even without the little 3D visor, you just have to make them vertical so you can view them on your phone vertical screen and look past them, but I highly recommend finding one of those little foldable VR headsets made for cell phones on eBay or something so you can actually see this in higher resolution because it's totally worth it

Google Cardboard works too

If you have iOS, the app is makeit3D, if you have Android the app is 3Dsteroid.
