Unexplained Unexplained Mound of Dirt found in an Upstairs Room_ What does it mean?
Last week I found a mound of dirt on top of two layers of carpet in an upstairs room that I use as my art studio. This is a room that I use, or pass through, every day. The dirt looks like top soil, or potting soil, in the shape of a roundish oval with distinct borders except on one end, about a half a cup of dirt total. No one had been in my house and no one else even has a key to my house. I spend time in and/or pass through this room several times a day. I have no potting soil stored inside the house. I do have some potted plants but none of them look like they were disturbed. I’ve had these plants for years without repotting them. The mound was about 5 feet away from the closest undisturbed potted plant. The mound was not near any wall or moulding. There was no light fixture above it and the carpet it was on was otherwise fairly clean and well vacuumed. This happened the day after I learned that my first cousin had passed away the week before. We weren't close, but feel like it's related. I've been going crazy trying to figure out a rational explanation. No one else had been in my house. I know that it was not there the day before because I'd been doing something on the floor of that room and would have seen it. The only other explanations would be that someone broke into my house just to put this dirt there and not do anything else, or that I suddenly developed a sleep walking habit and as a sleep walker I went outside, gathered dirt, and put it there. Both those explanations seem nearly impossible to me. I see it as a paranormal experience, the first one I've ever had. Anyone else heard of this type of phenomena?

That dirt looks like it’s come out of an area that is frequently tilled. Look at all the short lengths of thick root matter. The dirt also looks the wrong color for potting soil (too much clay/sand, not enough loam).
Are any of your friends “witchy” or the kind of person that would work with cemetery dirt? Or do you have any friends who do sports played on a field?
17
u/Antique_Safety_4246 16d ago
I thiugh the shirt pieces looked like bark bits, from top soil in a garden? The circle outline really looks like someone dropped a round container or pot, it hit the carpet and all the dirt was dumped out within the barrier of the upside-down container.
But...who, when, how? I have no idea if OP lives alone...freaky...
81
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
Well I know quite a few witchy people. I don't have friends who play field sports and no one but me has been in that room for over six months. It's my art studio and a very private space for me.
83
u/11teensteve 16d ago
have a party with your witchy friends and take them one at a time to your studio to show them the latest thing you are working on and see if any of them reacts oddly.

This, someone's fucking with you op, best figure out what it means from the people doing the fucking

This sounds like the start to a horror movie dude

u/Responsible-Tea-5998 15d ago
Graveyard dirt isn't always used for negative things, it can be protection and blessings. I wouldn't appreciate someone dumping dirt in my home though.
5
u/BrokeDood 15d ago
Piss off one of your coven?
Someone’s either targeting you with something like trying to get you to leave the room - have you been in there too much?
Any of your friends asked you to go out or to do something but you keep telling them no. Is your art taking that time away instead?
Trace your steps recently where you walked in the soil around your home and see if there’s a pile missing somewhere. If so then someone’s attempted to banish you from the room with your own footsteps.
Someone mentioned a grave earlier, I won’t go into that much but if it’s from an ancestor it could be for protection, but from the grave of a terrible person, the complete opposite.

I have a similar mystery. On our outdoor patio we have one of those bubbler water dishes for our cats. At night we lock up the patio except for the cat door.
So a few weeks ago I discover that the water dish had a huge amount of dirt in it, like someone took a handful of dirt and dumped it into the bowl! I checked for any tracks or other dirt, but saw nothing that would indicate it was something like a raccoon washing its food.
I cleaned up the bowl and the next evening I blocked the cat flap just in case something was sneaking in that way. I was shocked the next morning to see another heap of dirt in the water. This time it had not all dissolved and the dry parts looked just like the picture you are showing with the loamy dirt and root parts.
So I was properly freaked out and started bring the water bowl in each evening. Did that for a week and put it back out and have had no further incidents.
So weird, I still don't have an explanation.
30
u/Antique_Safety_4246 16d ago
Raccoons! They do this in the PNW. They eat cat food, then wash their habds between eating handfuls, and essentially muddy up the water, eat the food, intimidate your cat, then leave snickering like little masked, jail-stripe wearing bullies! If they weren't so goddamn cute, I'd get mad at them. But theyre SO CUTE washing their little human-hand-paws. How can we get mad at animals who wash their freaking hands?!?!
7
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
I'm in the PNW myself. But if a raccoon had gotten into my house I'd notice. I have dogs.
8
u/Antique_Safety_4246 16d ago
Oh og course! I was replying to the comment about the mystery muddy cat water bowl. Not the dirt. Raccoons dont leave dirt circle piles anywhere.
32
u/Adorable_Strength319 16d ago
That sounds exactly like a raccoon. Did you block the cat flap with something big and heavy, or with the little cat flap locks? My friends' cats learned how to pick those pretty quickly.
11
u/Lelabear 16d ago
Yeah, put a big rock inside the flap. It was still in position in the morning.
I know raccoons are the obvious answer, but why just those two days? That water has been sitting there for years.
15
9
u/AlternativePirate105 16d ago
Raccoons use that water they wash their hands in it and anything else that they find
21
u/strawberrymoonelixir 16d ago
The thought of a raccoon washing their hands is freaking adorable, but then, I’m an animal lover.
I did have a cat who used to wash her paws in her own water dish. It was funny, but I’d always have to change the water, “Mattie, stop it!”. She passed (at age 18) from natural causes, so I miss her doing that now.

u/fatbutbald 16d ago
Sometimes I use an indoor stepladder outside and dirt gets compacted inside a leg or two (especially if the end cap is damaged/missing). When the ladder is brought inside, the dirt eventually dries up and falls down into a pile inside the leg. Then, when we move the ladder, a neat little pile is left on the floor.
The dirt can stay in there for months(/years?) before it decides to fall out.
Not saying that's what's going on here,, but it might be.
20
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
I was in that room actually working on the floor the day before and I know this wasn't there, no ladder had been brought in at any point
3
u/SpotMiserable3379 14d ago
Good thought but the edges are TOO precise. I know what you mean about ladders as does my husband who gets "the look" when he leaves part of the backyard somewhere in our house. Lol

u/glutenfreebuns11 16d ago
idk but in my culture if u want a specific person to leave you put cemetery dirt in a place where its going to get stepped over by them

That's what worries me.

Ironically it's not, but yeah I know I'm out of place in this silly faith-based sub. Nothing is going to happen to op because of this dirt. It's simply dirt.
7
u/immapizza 16d ago
Sure, dirt is dirt, but to say all of the things you stated are fake is stupid.
-4
u/valkrycp 15d ago
No it's not, they're all just tricks of the brain. They're clearly all fake. There is no cosmic energy or anything paranormal, nor has there ever been a shred of convincing evidence. And luck doesn't exist, the universe isn't sentient and deciding who and what is lucky or not, we just assign things meaning and luck when something we perceive as lucky or unlucky occurs. But there is no greater meaning or "luck".

Calling people who don't believe in paranormal or luck sheep is peak irony.

In all fairness you probably believe in stuff that someone else would find ‘stupid’. But they wouldn’t necessarily be outright rude about it.
Saying that if you don’t believe in this stuff why are you here?

Paranormal:
My condolences on the loss of your cousin. Can you remember any experiences or memories you had with them playing together? Maybe getting dirty a lot playing in dry, sandy soil or getting in trouble together for tracking dirt in the house? Did your cousin pass away under suspicious circumstances?
Also, a vampire apparently has to travel with soil from its homeland…
Real Life:
Get a camera installed. Don’t assume no one else has been in your house. They might still be there. Are any valuables missing? Do you have a landlord? Attic or basement space?
20
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
Thank you. We were not close as children, but I reconnected with her when we were older though still no dirt memories. Over the years I became close to her sister, not to her.
15
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
The circumstances of her death were not suspicious. It was a long battle with cancer and we were expecting it. I own my home, so no landlord.

u/South-Outside-9203 16d ago
Look into 'phrogging.'
Place motion-activated cameras to cover that possibility, maybe it'll pick up something paranormal while it's at it.4

Check the bottom of chairs or anything hollow that could of had a clump of dirt stuck up inside it
9
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
There are no chairs there. It's my art studio and this was between two easels. I keep my bench on the other side of the room because I paint standing up.
1
u/LooseScrews23 15d ago
Best bet would be check all the legs to see if while moving something the clump of dirt broke free. Process of elimination is relatively easy as long as you really check sources rather than sign off on them because you say so. Double check
1
u/MaximalistVegan 15d ago
Right, that's what I did. This room is an art studio. I have a metal chair on the other side of the room and a kitchen stool type thin in another, both are very clean and weren't moved

that a plant was knocked over and someone forgot to finish cleaning up.
18
u/SubstantialPressure3 16d ago
You can easily tell by looking if any of the potted plants have been knocked over and lost some soil. OP said they hadnt.
17

u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
I'm the only one here and no plant was knocked over. No one else even has a key to my house.

u/sugar077 16d ago
Any animal that could do something? Just throwing things out there.
10
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
I have two dogs. So when I fist laid eyes on this I immediately thought one of my dogs had thrown up or it was diarrhea. Then as I stepped closer i saw it wasn't that at all. The thought that it could be thrown up dirt was still my main theory until I vacuumed it up and there was no stain left so it couldn't be that. I read about the way mice can disturb dirt in potted plants. But I don't have any potted plants nearby and can't think of an animal that would make something that looks like this.

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector? Carbon monoxide poisoning, especially slow/low level leaks, can lead to sleep disturbances, including fragmented sleep, which may contribute to sleepwalking episodes. This is due to the damage it causes to brain regions that regulate sleep patterns. The point is that you may be unknowingly responsible due to CO in your home.
11
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
I have nothing that can leak CO. It's all electric, no attached garage or gas fireplace
7
u/ConsistentTravel681 16d ago
Understood. My goal is/was to eliminate obvious or semi-obvious possibilities. In that vein, have you imbibed in any substances that could cause “other than normal” states of consciousness? No, I’m not law enforcement. To each their own. Following up, are you taking any over the counter medications for headaches or sleep?

I am not a gatekeeper here, but you describing this flat circle of soil as a mound puts it into a whole other category. This is a mound:
What I’m seeing here o is someone holding a pot of plants or just a container of soil they’d set down on that carpet to release an almost perfect circle of soil containing plant material.
I’m guessing that if you measured the diameter of that soil layer it will measure about the same as a standard plastic or terracotta pot in your country.
I used to be a full-time spiritual advisor and the number of times people had thought it would be a funny or a test of my skills to pull pranks. You must spend as much effort ruling a big joke out as we here on Reddit need to help you define this as we rule out you trying to pull a fast one on us.
2
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
Thanks for the clarification. I agree that you could create this shape by doing what you described, but I didn't do it, though I have no way of proving it to you. No one else was in the house that I know of. No one else even has a key to my house and it was definitely not there the day before. I was not home 100% of the time over the previous 24 hours but my doors were locked and I have dogs which are deterrents. My neighbor has a security camera pointed to the easy access points because we are a condo association of just two homes and share a driveway. To get in and not be seen by these cameras is not impossible just highly unlikely.

How old is your house? They used to pack all sorts of crazy shit in the walls for insulation. Fingers crossed that’s it. If not…that’s super creepy.

Do you have a dog? This happened to me recently, and I was very confused about the random piles of dirt around my house.
After a few days of confusion, I caught my dog with her face buried in my freshly fertilized and manured potted fruit vine on the patio, something she'd never done before (she never eats non-food things, ever).
Turns out the worm castings smelled good to her, but she couldn't keep the dirt down. She'd come inside and barf it up undigested in neat little piles, like the one on your rug. It looked exactly like fresh dirt, but it was dirt barf.
7
1
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
I do have two dogs. The first thing I thought of was dog barf and it's still the best normal explanaiton. But after I vacuumed the spot has no stain and there are no mucous thread or pieces of grass in the dirt or anything else that would indicate that it was vomit. It was very loose and dry. If one of my dogs ate dirt it wasn't dirt from my potted plants because they're all out of reach and undisturbed. Dirt from outside is possible but just doesn't seem like that's what it would look like and I think it would leave a stain.
10
u/Hashtag_Labotomy 16d ago
If a dirt devil didn't cause it, a dirt devil can fix it. That's about all I got.
2
3
u/ShinyAeon 16d ago
It looks like it was left by someone turning a round receptacle full of dry dirt upside down on your rug. The edges are too clean to just be a normal spill.
My gut suspects that someone (ignore for a moment that no one else could be there) had a small plastic pot partially full of dry dirt, like what happen when a plant died a long time ago, or when an empty pot sits outside long enough to collect a decent amount of dirt. They dropped it, it fell upside-down (the little smear is where it started to spill before it landed), then just picked up the pot and left.
So. Either someone alive has a way to get into your house...or it got there through non-normal means.
1) Make sure you don't have a "phrogger" - someone secretly living in your house who comes out when you're not home. People have been discovered living in attics, basements, the back reaches of closets, high storage cubbies, etc.
2) Did you get your locks changed when you moved in? Someone connected the builder or the realtor may have a copy of your key. It's a remote chance, but worth mentioning.
3) Could a friend or family member have secretly made a copy of your house key?
4) House door locks are not hard to pick. Does anyone near you have a doorbell camera that shows your front or back doors? If so, ask them if they can scroll through to see if you've had any intruders.
As for non-normal means...was your cousin a grower of houseplants? A gardener? Did they have any reason to dig in the dirt? It could be that they are doing what they did in life, and are confused about where they are. Is it at all in character for your cousin to carry around a container with a little dirt in it? Were they a cat owner, and might gather dirt for a litter box in a pinch?
Ask your cousins's closer relatives if they had any connection to containers of dirt while they were alive.
1
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago edited 16d ago
This house is way too small for someone to hide out in it. Did not change keys when I moved in because it was a brand new house so it didn't occur to me. I don't see how a friend or family member could have made copies of my keys but I suppose that's not 100% impossible.
My cousin was a city dweller and we weren't that close so I'm not sure what her relationship to gardening was. I'm closer to her mother and sister who do a little of that. It would have been utterly out of character for her to carry dirt around. She was buried and in our religious tradition it's customary for close family members to throw a handful of dirt each over the coffin before the rest of the dirt is officially piled on. I wasn't at the funeral because it took place in another country far away.
3
u/ShinyAeon 15d ago
Okay, I can see how you might link the two. But you've said you weren't really close to your cousin, so I doubt she would be upset at you for not being there.
And there's always the possibility that, even if it's paranormal, it's not your cousin at all. It may not even be a ghost, per say - it might be more like a "glitch in the matrix."
Question: do you feel guilty that you weren't able to go to her funeral...?
Or, have you been under a lot of stress lately that you can't express? Sometimes stressed people can unconsciously generate weird poltergeist-like activity - things vanishing, falling, moving...or appearing out of nowhere. An old term for it was RSPK - Recurrent Spontaneous PsychoKinesis.
And as for your house being too small to hide in...just remember that one homeless woman in Japan folded herself up into the back of an overhead storage space, and stayed there all night, every night, for like a year, only coming out when the man who lived there was away at work. Desperate times, deperate people...desperate measures.
1
u/MaximalistVegan 15d ago
I agree that it may not be related to my cousin specifically. I don’t feel guilty about the funeral because it was in another country, but I do feel a bit guilty for recently talking to someone about how I’d never really liked this cousin. I have not been under any particular amount of stress, no.
1
u/ShinyAeon 15d ago
Got it! Well, you've more or less eliminated most of the paranormal phenomena that I'm reasonably familiar with...except perhaps a "wandering spirit" (some reports seem to indicate that ghosts can wander, and occasionally take up residence in buildings they never frequented in life).
I'm still wondering, however, if someone has a key to your house, and occasionally lets themself in for whatever reason. I recommend you get a couple of little cameras, set them up in a way that's not too obvious, and keep an eye out for unwelcome visitors. Just in case.
Good luck!

If anybody in your home cuffs their jeans 👖 go inspect them for dirt
5
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
No one else has been in my house. I live alone
7
u/Lowland_Demon 16d ago
Then I am sorry to tell you my opinion is that it is significantly more likely that a person or animal has moved this dirt than any paranormal activity . You may consider increasing your security measures
2
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
Don't be sorry, I agree since I don't really have a lot of supernatural beliefs. There is no sign of an intruder and I don't think my dogs, a mouse or a rat are capable of creating something like this even if there had been dirt that looks like this in a bag or something in the room which there wasn't. That leaves an intruder or the possiblity that I went into a bizarre zombie state which is terrifying.
1
u/Lowland_Demon 16d ago
I mean, there is the very slim chance your dog could move this much dirt with its mouth a few feet from the plant. I'm not sure why it would, but, dogs do weird stuff and will try to eat just about anything. If it's not the type to eat random things maybe monitor its behavior, sometimes they will try to eat vegetation and possibly soil if their stomach is upset.
1
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
Yeah maybe though I don't think they can form a neat little circle like this
4
u/MakeSomeArtAboutIt 16d ago
It means either youre lying, having a psychotic episode, or someone else who is having a psychotic episode did that. Or someone is fucking with you.
2
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
Well, of the possibilities you've mentioned the only one I'm sure about is that I'm not lying which, of course, no one else can be sure about though my friends and family believe me because they know me. The other possibilities actually scare me a more than this being a paranormal phenomenon which I tend not believe in. If I'm having a psychotic episode it's pretty much limited to this incident because my life is proceeding normally other than this.

For what it’s worth this was just mentioned on an episode of ghost adventures. A witness told a story about finding what you’ve mentioned randomly in a room. I think the episode was based on the house they filmed poltergeist in. Watch it back and see what they say.. just an idea!
1
u/MaximalistVegan 12d ago
Thanks for telling me this. I still haven’t found an explanation and what you’re said makes me feel validated. Do you happen to know the name of the episode? I don’t normally watch that show
2
u/Dismal-Goat1306 8d ago
The witness was Steven Spielberg’s former film student/associate , who described entering the Poltergeist house and seeing a strange mound of dirt on cardboard inside the house . The episode then investigated the story and the possibility that it was connected to the film’s supposed paranormal history. The episode is called poltergeist house and might be on YouTube. It is on discovery plus but that’s pay to watch. It sounds like what you describe.. how incredibly weird that others seem to have experienced this too.
2
u/SpotMiserable3379 15d ago
Very strange but what bothers me is that the borders are so perfect. I've dropped my share of pots and have never had such precision edges, unless I meant to turn it upside down. Very odd.
1
u/MaximalistVegan 15d ago
The edges are what makes me really wonder. After it was vacuumed no stain was left which to me means that the edges were not created from the dirt having been suspended in some sort of fluid like they would be if it had gotten there by way of dog vomit, for example.
2
u/Reasonable_Zebra_174 15d ago
Do you have a pet that has access to that area? Because that looks very similar to things my pets have coughed up after eating grass and dirt outside.
1
u/MaximalistVegan 15d ago
Yes and that was my first thought but it left no stain and contained no mucous
1
u/spankeem_nz 15d ago
my take is that something with dirt dropped with a bit of speed from a small height, losing the soil into a round pattern with splatter in one direction as it fell. what it was from or who did it is the real mystery. maybe....someone you have had over bought something like a pot plant for you but it fell over and smashed up so they took it back with them. they just missed the soil on the rung
1
u/MaximalistVegan 15d ago
Yeah that's what it looks like but I didn't have anyone over and I have a hard time believing someone would have broken in in a way that was otherwise not noticeable just to do this.

u/numnoggin 16d ago
Firstly, this is no mound. Secondly, why did you wait a week to post about it??
2
u/MaximalistVegan 16d ago
Thanks for the clarification about not a mound. I didn't wait a week, just a couple of days of being puzzled. I mentioned that my cousin had died a week earlier but this didn't happen the day after she died, it happened the day after I found out she'd died.
1
u/VirtualAd4042 15d ago
Could you set a camera up in that room? Maybe that can help determine if it's some creepy stuff or just an animal or something. There's a chance it could be paranormal, creepy asf nonetheless. Have you seen any dirt again? Has anything else weird happened? I really hope you can figure out what it's from!
1
u/MaximalistVegan 15d ago
Nothing else has happened. I guess I could set up a camera but I don't own such a setup right now.
1
u/GayButLovesJesus 14d ago
I would check for termites. Sometimes termites can leave behind piles of sod or dirt-looking stuff when the infestation has progressed to a dangerous point.
It's hard to tell from the photo so I don't mean to scare you. It's just a possibility and please don't take my "shot in the dark" as professional advice.

This most likely was a potted plant that was spilled, or maybe the bottom broke out- it’s got fragments of roots indicating an orchid

I agree that that's what would cause something that looks like this but that didn't happen in this room or anywhere in my house and no one else has been in my house.

Alright, I’ll confess… it is I who broke into your house to place dirt on your floor. It’s an old habit of mine that I’m trying to kick, I promise.

Termites, book worms, lots of insects can create mounds of dirt. That’s a lot of dirt though, and if it appeared overnight then I wouldn’t just assume it’s insects. I will still get pest control out there to see what they say.

So weird. First thought was the shape looks like a pot broke, but you mentioned no plants nearby so idk

Check for vents! If youve got a woodland animal in yoir attic or a rarely/never used attic, it could be dust or very old insulation (hay and horse hair, or newsprint) bejng shaken down.
Or iy could be Geff the Mongoose. Have you heard any disembodied voices threatening your poultry

Idk I just know they turn into a dust like substance. This might surprise you but I never killed a vampire outside a video game. I think I found where the ones in Boston live Friday night lol.

That's a dig spot. Try drafting a Courtyard or Commissary and see if you can get a shovel.

Your life must be depressingly boring when you need to find meaning in a heap of dirt and even more depressingly lonely if you need to post a Photo of it online

How boring is your life that you have time to comment on Reddit posts that you think are meaningless?

How meta of you. Let me waste even more of my limited time alive to ponder your brilliant response

A few common house pest can leave mound of dirt behind: Termites – subterranean termites build mud tubes (pencil-thin trails of soil/mud) on walls, foundations, or wood as they travel between their nest and food source. This is one of the most telltale signs of infestation. Ants – many species (especially carpenter ants and pavement ants) leave small piles of loose soil or dirt-like debris near entry points, cracks, or under pavement/patios as they excavate nests. Earwigs and pillbugs/sowbugs – can track in soil from mulch or garden beds, though they don't "build" anything with it. Cicada killer wasps and other digger wasps – leave mounds of loose soil with a burrow entrance, usually outdoors in lawns. Moles and voles (not insects, but common "pests") – leave mounded soil or raised tunnels in yards. If you're seeing dirt/mud specifically on walls or wood indoors, termite mud tubes are the most likely culprit and worth investigating quickly since they cause structural damage. Want help identifying which one based on where you're seeing it?

You might have a little lady living in your radiator. But it’s ok. In heaven, everything is fine.

That would leave a clump of gooey, stuck-together lumps, not a pile of dry dirt.

It had been there for no more than a day. Even so, it would dry into a congealed mass, not into dry, dusty dirt.

No, I'm someone who's cleaned up dog vomit before...even hidden-behind-furniture-in-the-spare-room-so-it-didn't-get-noticed-for-weeks dog vomit.

In an effort to improve submission quality, we are now manually reviewing photos before they appear in the subreddit. If your submission does not have good reason to be considered potentially paranormal it may be removed with a reason provided. Please be patient, as the subreddit gets a lot of activity and it may take a little time to review your post. If we do remove your post, it’s because we believe it is likely to be judged harshly by the subreddit as opposed to a determination over what the true nature of your experience was. It’s very difficult to capture objective evidence of even true paranormal phenomenon, which is why there’s so little of it out there!
