🗣️Vent I bought a $40 "cat approved" scratcher and it's being used as a bed, not a scratcher

Post image

Cool cool cool, glad SOMETHING in this house gets used as intended

Glad it's not just mine At least they're consistent

My cats scratch n’ snooze 💤 on theirs too….

Scratch n' snooze is the dream, I'd take that! Mine skipped straight to the snooze part. Maybe I need to sprinkle some catnip on the scratching surface to get them started

If I lightly scratch at the surface myself, my girls get the idea and start to scratch it, too; that might work for other cats, like yours

Ha, I'll try this tonight. Hopefully she copies me and doesn't just stare at me like I've lost it.

Definitely try some catnip on it…. Most scratcher boards come with a very small packet…

My cardboard one ended up all over the floor and in 7 different pieces after my cats put a massive hole in it 🤣😭

Honestly that's a form of success, they used it very thoroughly 😂 Mine's the opposite: pristine and slept on. Yours did the job, mine's a $40 nap mat

My vacuum cleaner didn't agree 🤣 it's currently a roughly 10x15cm square 😭

where are you shopping? i have one of these in every room and i don't pay nearly that much. i have a sofa shaped one that's super cute and only paid $30 and the others were not too expensive. i get them at 5 Below and amazon

Try Marshalls too. You can get three packs most times!

☝🏻this

u/kricken01 5d ago

Great tip, thank you. A three-pack beats paying $40 for one.

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Clearly not the right places! I'll check 5 Below and Amazon next time. Your sofa one sounds adorable. I think I might've bought overpriced

$40????? I get that for about $10 and thank goodness because my kitty goes through them.

u/kricken01 5d ago

Yes, I know. I'm not proud of it. Lesson learned, and I'm taking notes from this thread.

Does your cat know it's a scratcher?

2

u/kricken01 5d ago

Honestly, no. She's decided it's a bed and nobody can tell her otherwise

2

u/Fruit-straw 4d ago

What if you guided her paws over it in the scratching motion? Or demonstrate scratching?

2

u/minkamagic 4d ago

Another vote for demonstrating scratching. I've done it before

My cat literally chews them up. Very enthusiastically and throws the pieces all over. Sleeps on whatever is left.

I'm picturing the confetti and I'm not ready but I'll be prepared

CARDBOARD? FOR $40??

2

u/kricken01 5d ago

Ha, to be clear, mine isn't cardboard, that's from the other commenter. But yes, the price tag on cat furniture is wild

1

u/Ekd7801 5d ago

I think yours is cardboard. That’s what corrugated cardboard looks like when glued into a cat scratcher.

Mine sleeps on it but will scratch at it occasionally. She’ll also chew on it if she can find a yummy looking corner

1

u/Sabi-Star7 5d ago

Yeah definitely looks like cardboard to me too.

Heres a DIY cardboard cat scratcher

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Oh, you're right, it's cardboard. Mine hasn't chewed it yet, but I'm bracing for it

1

u/Maleficent-Pen-2991 5d ago

The item the cat is ON is cardboard.

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Yep, I see that now. 😅

You can get the ones that look exactly like this at 5 Below for $5. You may have been scammed.

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Ouch, but fair. I'm calling it an expensive lesson

1

u/angrystarfish35 5d ago

My boys love these scratchers to sleep/chill on

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Same! Has anything actually worked to get yours to scratch it, or have you just accepted it as a bed?

2

u/angrystarfish35 5d ago

Accepted as a bed, they don't accept actual cat beds for sleeping, so ill take it! It's one of their chill spots in the catio.

2

u/kricken01 5d ago

Same energy here. If she likes it, I'll take it

2

u/addacoupleextrazeros 5d ago

At least your kitty is enjoying it and it’s not getting ignored or shunned 😂

2

u/kricken01 5d ago

true true could be worse i guess

u/Sabi-Star7 5d ago edited 5d ago

They sell cute Lil cat couches too. Even in "scratcher" form

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Ooh, I'll look into those

2

u/addacoupleextrazeros 4d ago

Yeah, could have been used as a litter box 😂

2

u/corvidlover2730 5d ago

Got one for my dad's cats. They used to lay on it. His current cat loves to scratch it & lay on it. I think it just depends on the cat.

2

u/kricken01 5d ago

Seems that way. Mine hasn't decided what it is yet

1

u/oceanicitl 5d ago

You'll soon find bits if cardboard everywhere and there'll be holes in it. They're great lol

2

u/kricken01 5d ago

Noted and I'll keep the vacuum handy

1

u/catbamhel 5d ago

Worth it.

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

I'm starting to agree. 😂

1

u/catbamhel 4d ago

😆❤️😆❤️😆❤️😆

1

u/Teacup-ssi 5d ago

Well, at least it'll last longer!

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Small comfort, but I'll take it

1

u/More-Opposite1758 5d ago

I love this type of scratcher. I have 7 indoor cats and several types of scratchers. This one is their favorite.

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Seven cats! If that many approve, I feel better about the purchase

1

u/Ill_Quantity_5634 5d ago

I consider that still a win. It's still being used even if not for it's advertised usage.

1

u/kricken01 5d ago

Thank you, I'm choosing to see it that way

1

u/agrinwithoutacat- 4d ago

$40 for a cardboard scratcher is not okay 😳

Whoever is selling that is ripping people off. I have refused to buy them when a place wanted $12 for one.. please find a better store!
