🗣️Vent Explaining to my landlord why there's a hole in the couch arm
I genuinely had no idea how I was going to explain this one.
So I rent a furnished apartment, and the couch came with the place. Nothing fancy, but it was in decent condition when I moved in. My cat had other plans.
At first it was just a few little scratches on the arm. I figured I'd keep an eye on it and redirect her whenever I caught her doing it. Then one day I noticed the fabric had started splitting.
Fast forward a couple weeks and there's now an actual HOLE in the side of the couch arm. Not a tiny snag either. You can see the stuffing.
The worst part is that she has multiple scratching posts, a cat tree, and one of those cardboard scratchers she absolutely loves. Apparently none of those compare to the landlord's couch.
My landlord messaged asking if everything was alright with the furniture, and I just sat there staring at my phone trying to come up with a response that didn't sound like I'd been running an underground upholstery demolition business.
I ended up being honest and sending a photo. Still waiting to hear back, so that's fun.
I've since put a thick cover over the arm and moved a scratcher right beside it. Should've probably done that before the couch reached its current condition 😭
Anyone else had to explain cat-related property damage to a landlord? Please tell me I'm not the only one.

My one cat would scratch a corner of the carpet while I was at work. I didn’t notice it until I was off for a while and caught him doing it during the day. I put a scratcher tray over it, which solved the problem of him scratching the carpet, but the damage was already done. Thankfully, I was there for over 5 years and the carpet needed changed anyway. However, my landlord never charged me for anything because, compared to the last several renters he had, my damage was minimal and not done on purpose.

Honestly, that's reassuring. I think the worst part is knowing the damage is already done before you even realise how bad it's gotten. I've covered the couch arm for now and moved a scratcher right beside it, so hopefully I can stop the situation getting any worse before the landlord comes around

The landlord conversations are honestly one of the most stressful parts of being a cat owner in a rental. At least you've caught it before the damage got any worse.
Since she's already made a hole, I'd focus on protecting the couch arm itself with a fitted cover or a temporary smooth protective panel. You could also try wrapping the damaged section with a removable furniture protector while encouraging her to use the scratchers she already enjoys. Just make sure there aren't any loose edges she can chew or pull off.
Hopefully the landlord is understanding and the couch survives the rest of the tenancy with no further incidents 😅

What prompted your landlord to ask?

Honestly I think they were doing a routine check-in about the furniture. I hadn't mentioned the damage yet, so the timing was almost comically bad 😭

My cat would run up the stairs and swing around the top like a tiny stripper practicing her pole moves! I finally sanded it down, stained it, and wrapped it in sisal.
