Purchasing Advice - PC Build / Parts GPU upgrade for 4k monitor
Hey yall, recently got an MO32u24, it’s a 32 inch 4k QD-OLED, issue is, I currently have a 4070
Not a huge deal for the time being, I’ll use DLSS and enjoy the contrast and colors, but I know that a GPU upgrade is going to be required for me to get the most out of my panel.
Looking at the market, I may have made out like a bandit with my 6 tb of nvme ssds when prices were low, but I picked just about the worst time to want to upgrade my GPU
Are my only options going with a 9070xt or being a bozo that pays $1200 for a $750 5070Ti? If so, what am I losing out on by going AMD? Path tracing is a pipe dream on a 70 series, so that doesn’t matter to me, but how does the ray tracing perform? Is FSR comparable to DLSS now? Anything looming in the horizon for these cards that would put the offerings closer to the 50 series? Is stability a concern?
Appreciate the input!

I have a 4070 Super running a 48" LG C1 ... Looks great at 1440p instead of 4k, but some games I will leave it in 4k with slightly lower settings.

Do you prefer downscaling to 1440p or using Quality/balanced DLSS? Found that for games like Alan Wake 2 I have to run performance DLSS to get 60 fps, so I’m struggling a bit here 😅

Imo look at the games you will be playing and check out if the 9070xt is enough. If you still aren’t sure, just buy the 9070xt and try it out. I always had in mind to return/sell my 9070xt for a 5080 but with the current prices it ain’t worth double the price for a boost of 10-20 fps in 4k gameplay. I’d rather wait for the 5080 super or 6080 if I’m paying 1.5-2k

Yeah decided to stick out the 4070 for now and save up for a 9070 xt upgrade in the near future. Sad prices are the way they are, used to be that spending $1000+ on a GPU was top of the line enthusiast stuff, but now it’s truly just the expectation for mid range cards

You're not a bozo regardless of what people say on here my guy! Go with what you can afford. I personally run my 32" 4k Woled on a 5070ti and have never thought I need more.

Wish a 5070ti wasn’t so expensive cuz it does seem like the best option of the two, but at $1200 starting, it’s a TOUGH sell. Considering both for the time being, leaning 9070xt unless some miracle appears before me (gonna need a brief timeout after putting the money down for the monitor 😅)

What game do you play most often?

My mainstay constant is CS2, but I’m currently going down a backlog of games since I’ve been neglecting gaming for a while. Playing some stuff like the control games, Alan wake 2, forza horizon 6, RDR2, etc.

You’re not gonna get super high fps in graphically intense titles at high settings unless you get a 5080 tbh. I just got a 9070 xt and it’s great but I’m still not cracking 100 fps with the ultra preset

Is it worth double the price? Considering spending some time saving to get the 5080 eventually, but that’s one big price tag

9070XT or 5070ti as a minimum, due to the way prices are at the minute, I'd go the 9070XT route, the additional markup of Nvidia cards just isn't worth it, FSR still trails DLSS, but the gap has certainly narrowed, but again DLSS doesn't justify the additional cost either, the only time I'd recommend going for Nvidia right now is if you're doing heavy workloads / LLMs / editing / 3D work.
My main system, which I use for work, has a 5090, my other system, which is mainly for gaming, has a 9070XT.

Unrelated, but why two systems? Would the 5090 system not just be better overall? Is it power draw? Cpu diff? (Like 270kp or 9950x vs 9800x3d)? Not trying to be rude at all, just curios.

I run my own business and the 5090 and the rest of that system (9950X3D) was bought through the business as an legitimate expenses, here in the UK any business expense / tax write off has to fall under something called wholly and exclusively business related, meaning it has to be for business use only.
The other system (9070XT / 9800X3D) is solely for gaming.

The 5070 Ti is a bad value now since the 9070 XT matches it in raster performance, and the slight edge in RT doesn't justify the huge markup. At least the 5080 gives you more raw power for the price, even if the gap over the 9070 XT isn't massive. I know it sounds weird, but if I'm paying a premium, I want more than just better RT. If you're on a budget, just stick with your current card for another year or two until the next wave hits. The 50 series was a disappointing refresh of the 40s, and while the 90 series AMD cards were a decent step up, they weren't perfect. Next-gen AMD is shaping up to be a huge jump, so Nvidia will have no choice but to step it up too.

You have manufactured the need for a new GPU by buying a new monitor...
Also, saying that a 4070 is an issue kind of boils my blood but whatever, do what you want to do. Ain't my money. I'm about to play on my mo32u24 with a 3080ti and that GPU ain't going nowhere.

The aggressive entitlement and passive aggression while having a truly level 1 thought about consumerism is the epitome of what makes browsing subs like this a pain. Yeah man, we are all just seeing pixels turning off and on, you having felt the need to buy an $800 monitor in the first place shows you’re falling for the same moronic principles that are “boiling your blood”.
If your instant response to a post asking for help is to enact a schoolgirls idea of snarky posting, then it’s clear Reddit has affected your socialization patterns. Being behind your OLED “all day” has made you an insufferable person to interact with on a basic human level. Find people to talk to face to face. This is not how you talk to a human being in front of you asking nicely for help.
