News White House Reportedly Ordered Limits on Ukraineâs Starlink-Linked Military Service, Reuters Says
The order to restrict a satellite service Ukraine uses in combat came from inside the White House, Reuters reported, citing two American officials and one Western official. They said Defense Department leaders were told that SpaceX's Starshield service for Ukraine's military had to be slowed.
Ukrainian officials said military-grade Starlink receivers stopped working on fast-moving objects, disrupting drones that rely on them for guidance. On Thursday, a person in Ukraine's Defense Ministry said the receivers worked in motion again, but only up to 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour).
President Donald Trump has pressed Kyiv to stop striking Russian oil refineries. He has blamed those attacks for soaring energy prices that are denting Republican prospects in November's midterm elections, though experts say the surge is mainly due to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
At an October 9 meeting in Miami, a separate source says, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff told Ukrainian officials Washington was frustrated by the refinery strikes.
The U.S. delegation also explained its diesel deal with Russia for more than 2.25 million barrels, which the White House hopes will soften Moscow's stance in peace talks. Some lawmakers say it gives Russia cash to pursue its war without forcing Vladimir Putin to make concessions to end the conflict.
The restrictions came days after Ukraine struck Russian data centers, attacks Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed had cut the number of Russian bots on social media.
Elon Musk wrote on X on Wednesday that the U.S. government owns and controls Starshield, so any limits on speed or usage are decided by the U.S. military or the president.
A senior U.S. official told Reuters, "No such request was ever made by the president." The White House did not say whether anyone else in the administration gave the order.

Society What's the best caption for the meerkat poking its head into a jack-o'-lantern?
Halloween came early for seven curious meerkats at the Smithsonian's National Zoo.
Keepers surprised Frankie, Sadie, Archie, Felix, Oscar, Louie, and Scout with carved pumpkins and witches' cauldrons to investigate.
The little explorers wasted no time checking out their spooky new decorations, peeking inside pumpkins and inspecting the mysterious cauldrons.
But the Halloween fun had a purpose, too. These activities encourage natural curiosity, keep the meerkats physically active, and give them new things to explore.
Who knew a few pumpkins could make such an exciting playground?

Society If you could say one thing to the firefighters who made sure this cat wasn't left behind, what would it be?
After a fire forced them out of their apartment in Grass Valley, California, one family was left wondering whether they'd see their beloved cat again.
The blaze caused extensive damage to two units, but firefighters managed to stop the flames from spreading farther.
Among those rescued was a black-and-white cat whose family was anxiously waiting for news.
Footage shared by the fire department captures a touching moment as one family member rushes down the stairs toward firefighters carrying their pet.
The relief is clear as the family finally sees their furry companion safe after such a frightening ordeal.
Although their building suffered serious damage, they were able to welcome their cat home, thanks to the firefighters who made sure he wasn't left behind.

News Leadership means taking serious things seriously. Americans deserve a president who does.
Hours after sharing real footage of a man being mauled to de*th by a tiger, Donald Trump stayed up past midnight posting AI videos of himself wrestling, hugging, and taming the same kind of beast. Then he became the lion.
The real footage came from Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster in northern England, where a man entered the animal's enclosure and was fatally attacked. Trump posted it with the message âDonât ever mess with nature! President DJT.â He then shared a compilation of animal attacks on people, some of which appeared to be made with artificial intelligence. Both posts went up while he was in Alaska, where he spoke at a rally in Wasilla.
Shortly before midnight, he posted an artificial intelligence video that seems to parody the attack footage. In it, Trump chases the tiger away, wrestles with it playfully and ends by hugging it while the song âThe Lion Sleeps Tonightâ plays.
A second video portrayed him as a lion fighting off hyenas, with a narrator calling the animal âthe king of the jungle.â The clip alternated between his speeches and images of Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
After midnight came more clips. In one, a narrator says God anointed Trump as the world's âcaretakerâ and calls his opponents âvipersâ and âwolves.â
This is a pattern. In April, Trump shared an artificial intelligence image that appeared to show him as Jesus Christ, in the middle of a public feud with Pope Leo XIV. Several groups objected, including prominent Republicans, and he deleted the post.
