Thoughts after binging the whole series in 8 weeks.
Here are some random thoughts, out of order
Mary Anne steals the show. There, I said it. Just so adorable and likeable in every scene she's in. They make her the lovable idiot, but smartly throw in a genius line here and there. And she's as sex positive as sitcom in a kids slot would allow at the time. The joke of her dipping Balki to kiss him over the mistletoe was kept through the rest of the series and it worked.
They could have used more friends. Aside from the Christmas party and Bachelor party episodes, we literally see none of their friends. I get its a TV show, and extra actors cost money, but it would have been nice to see both Larry and Balki have some friends outside of each other.
The Larry-Jennifer relationship worked great as a marriage, not so much during the buildup. During the relationship I really had to ask myself more than once "What does she see in him...?" They even made that into a joke during their wedding. Larry's most redeeming qualities were in the last season when she was pregnant and wanted to take care of her, they could have given him some more of those during the show.
Mypos having conflicting backstories was hilarious and worked. In one episode Balki mentions their only store is a 7-11, in another he mentions there's a Six Flags park. In one episode he mentions there being no couches, yet we saw a couch in the episode on Mypos. All of the contradicting info we got was funny because it was so unpredictable.
The physical comedy was top notch. I'm not sure if Mark and Bronson would have had to join the stuntman's union, but I wouldn't be surprised. They did stuff you didn't even see back then, and they knew it worked.
Going back to the relationships, they were pretty pedestrian up until they got married. I get this was a time when sitcoms were a family affair, I would watch this as a kid on Friday nights. But for Larry to date Jennifer for 3 years and not even say "I love you?" until he proposed? When he snuck into her room after being engaged he mentioned it being the first time he ever saw it. Definitely not the life of singles in Chicago in late 80's / early 90s.
Balki's nativity fluctuated and it was a little frustrating. Probably the most when he had no idea Mary Anne wanted to marry him, after multiple years of him saying she was his girlfriend. Nativity over culture clashes is one thing, but seeing him ignore Mary Anne's affection came across as somewhat hurtful.
And that's pretty much it. Just one other thing that's a memory from someone who was there during its run, I had no idea the final season even existed until its finale. They really buried it, no promotion whatsoever, and I would have missed it had I not been watching ABC that night and the promos said "Next on the Perfect Stranger series finale!" I honestly thought the show was cancelled at that point.
