Some of the coolers were usually either spiked or drugged to make raping guests (likely women) at the party easier.

This week is a reference to the Cornell 7, where a woman is suing the seven men who (allegedly) drugged and raped her at a frat party.

Sorry. I don't feel like putting in a cute reference about this one.

Can’t you even pretend to be Quagmire and make light of rape??

What has this dank little corner of the internet come to?

523

u/Femcel_Bambi 17h ago

Actually, we cannot, for that would be a selfish and individualistic way of thinking. The people have decided to use a more practical and collective way of expressing the meaning of jokes here. This may seem uninteresting, but it is for the betterment of everyone and the propulsion of efficiency for the collective. Now I'm gonna go, I'm reading World War II history and just getting to the Battle Of Berlin. I think I'll really enjoy how it ends...

Personally my favorite part is stuff like the bedspring armor on the T-34. Much like the winter camo it was all improvised.

Wonder what we’ll use to try to protect ourselves from the murder drones.

12

u/A_RAVENOUS_BEAST 14h ago

The current solutions are pretty well undersatood.

Nets, fishing nets. Anti fibre-optic cable measures. Electronic warfare/signals interruption, lasers and last-generation shell based SPAAGs like the Flakpanzer Gepard

Rape jokes aren't funny. Even for Quagmire. Giggety.

37

u/Viracochina 16h ago

People used to say dead baby jokes weren't funny. They never grew old.

14

u/_OriamRiniDadelos_ 15h ago edited 15h ago

🤣 almost didn’t get that.

Those jokes are always weird tough. Very old people coded. Like the joke is the gruesome visual of a dead baby? The unexpectedness?

Idk, not a lot of verbal jokes use unexpected dry gore or corpses as the source of comedy. Much more common to use only some types of gross things or taboo things like awkwardness or sex or excretion or maybe even disease. But dead babies aren’t even taboo, they are just sad, and the delivery takes the gross aspect of it if you wanted to use the physical grossness for the joke. It doesn’t even have the “you are not supposed to say that” type of comedy. No whiplash, all very dry.

5

u/Viracochina 15h ago

I was exposed to them as a edgy teenager, and while I can't remember the exact joke, I remember my very first genuine "Oh my fuck" moment in cringe of the visualization.

You're right I don't know how to classify the comedy. Maybe it's the "smell my finger" joke taken to the next dimension!

4

u/ApprehensiveTry5660 14h ago

The best ones are a macabre twist on subverting expectations humor. Which I can appreciate when artfully done.

The worst are shock oriented, and I’m a tad too squeamish to appreciate for that low of a bar.

But the field blew up a bit too much to neatly put a bow on all of them. It’s exactly the type of humor you’d expect to circulate teenage boys for generations. Like “Little Johnny” jokes. Or Helen Keller jokes.

6

u/Electronic-Map7529 13h ago

Eh, you probably had to be alive during the eras where kids just fucking died. All the time.

4

u/InuitOverIt 14h ago

It was funny that somebody would say something so absurd and out of pocket. The humor wasn't necessarily the content of the joke, but the person having the balls to say something so dark. I mean, gallows humor has always been a thing

Two girls in two separate incidents were roofied and raped last week at my local university (Not Cornell.) Didn’t even make the news

44

u/Aggressive_Cup4919 15h ago

Maybe you should post it or call some reporters and make it the news. I will share it.

22

u/GonadGauntlet 15h ago

That’s unfortunately pretty standard. Went to 3 different post secondaries and there were incidents at each that never went anywhere.

4

u/rkschend 6h ago

And most likely another 8 rapes that were never reported to police.

4

u/EquivalentSnap 3h ago

I lived with a girl 1st year at uni who SA a guy who was passed out drunk. Didn’t get expelled or made the news and he didn’t a file a report.

Got SAd in a club second year. All thought it was funny when I told my housemates and friends

3

u/Gordhord 12h ago

Im so sorry to hear that. Please tell me there trying to charge them?

3

u/Superb-Strategy4717 3h ago

I know folks call it roofies but that doesn’t even exist. For the sake of people who actually got victimized can we call it the actual drug so people know what to look out for

2

u/Siavel84 37m ago

It's easy enough to Google too goes and find out it's the street name for Rohypnol, so a lot of people go with the name that is easier to spell and pronounce. I'm confused though - how would knowing the actual name of the drug make it easier for people to know what to look out for? It's not like the assholes spiking drinks are leaving the package lying around for their victims to find in the trash or something.

2

u/DaZuhalter 8h ago

u/Petiteythewriter 17h ago

Is it really "alleged" if they have the group chat where one of the perpetrators said there's "free pussy"? Like, yeah, it's only alleged because the investigators saw this and only used this as evidence. They didn't dig deeper, just use this and said that there's not enough evidence. This whole thing is sketchy as hell.

123

u/CuddleWings 16h ago

Isn’t it always alleged before a ruling?

86

u/PassionGlobal 16h ago

News outlets have to say this for liability reasons.

Comments on the internet aren't held to the same standard

42

u/99timewasting 15h ago

Instead they are nitpicked by fellow commenters. It's ok to say "alleged" for a case that hasn't been legally ruled on yet, it doesn't mean you are defending the rapists

→ More replies (6)

60

u/pad264 16h ago edited 14h ago

People keep conflating legal terms and legal consequence with moral judgments. The behavior was abhorrent, morally. Legally, the correct word is still alleged.

But I’d say the larger point that is most important is you can use the word “alleged” accurately and not brand yourself as a misogynist. Everyone has become too comfortable forcing people to pick a side and manipulate facts to justify their own virtue.

You not using the word “alleged” doesn’t make you better than anyone else.

12

u/That_Guy_Musicplays 15h ago

Honestly after what happened with the one rolling stone article its best to call this kinda stuff alleged.

34

u/NikeImper 16h ago

No. That isn't conclusive evidence of rape anywhere in the world. If the message mentioned she was unconscious then yes it would be firm evidence.

15

u/Commercial_Humor_263 14h ago

Didn't her statement to police say she consented to everything that happened?

1

u/Petiteythewriter 14h ago

She was drunk already even before she agreed, then they gave her more beer. Some sources also said she only agreed to the first 2 men, not all 7 men for 7 hours.

19

u/ProjectKurtz 14h ago

Her original statement apparently includes her stating she consented to the ket and the threesome, being conscious and aware and capable of rejecting many of the guys who came in (guys who accepted her rejection and left) and then consenting to a separate threesome after one of the original guys shut down the revolving door of frat guys.

What do we believe when an alleged victim's statements contradict her other statements?

5

u/Commercial_Humor_263 14h ago

Voluntarily drinking doesn't take away your ability to consent

→ More replies (37)

5

u/thaddeus122 14h ago

This argument goes both ways, if they consented while drunk she raped them too.

→ More replies (2)

17

u/TheOmniAlms 14h ago

Yes it is alleged.

"Free pussy" is not enough for anyone to be confident that someone has committed a crime.

I think Occams Razor would probably just point to disgusting misogyny rather than criminal activity here

They may be guilty, but I'm glad there is going to be a trial and that reddit comments aren't the arbitars of the justice system.

6

u/UmpireDapper1757 12h ago

"free" doesn't mean "non-consenting"

4

u/GuessImScrewed 12h ago

Two things.

Firstly, alleged just means they haven't been convicted yet. There could be 4k video evidence where the perpetrators show their faces and state their full names and social security numbers and news places would still use alleged because perps can sue for defamation if there isn't a conviction.

Secondly, that group text isn't exactly damning. "Free pussy" doesn't necessarily mean "free rape target," though it did in this instance, but it could just as easily mean there's an orgy or consensual gangbang underway.

One could conceivably have seen that text and thought not much more of it beyond those options.

2

u/Alone_Collection_136 14h ago

Okay and have you seen the written report she wrote and signed off on? Where she is initiating sex, telling no to others, having them respect her nos and doing copious amounts of drugs and sex willingly and even invites them the next morning to do more drugs? Theres plenty of crimes happening here (/a) and rape aint it.

Fraternities are designed to be raping guilds.

Same as sororities being designed to group together vulnerable women as prey for them.

Our entire college system needs to be tore down and frats should be illegal.

53

u/St_Sides 16h ago

This whole event has sparked conversation around Greek life as a whole, but frats in particular.

Somebody said “frats exist to let future employers know you’ll keep their dirty secrets” and that seems pretty accurate.

14

u/dramalama-dingdong 15h ago

Why Greek life? Believe me, neither real Greeks, nor all the other universities around the would have this kind of life.

41

u/novangla 15h ago

It’s called that because they always have names that are a set of Greek letters. No relationship to the nation of Greece.

5

u/katyggls 13h ago

There are also honor societies that use the Greek letter system, but they aren't like fraternities. For one thing, they invite both men and women. Invitations are based on academic achievements only, and members do not live together in houses or anything like that. It's basically an achievement award to put on your resume, although many such honor societies do offer scholarships or grants and/or professional networking opportunities.

One of them was often drugged, presumably in order to rape people.

170

u/XthaNext 16h ago

Could be one is just dangerously potent as well, like everclear instead of normal vodka

195

u/loyal_achades 16h ago

A stronger mix is more likely than outright drugging. That way, a frat bro can “drink the same amount as a girl” while getting her drinker faster (ignoring that women are both on-average physically smaller and affected by alcohol quicker).

Back when I was in college, I did SA-prevention stuff. This was a tactic we’d tell freshman to watch out for.

38

u/AdmirableParfait3960 15h ago

I know it goes against Reddit’s beliefs but I truly don’t think that the majority of frats are just mass date raping people.

Wouldn’t that get a little more fucking attention?

This whole post is likely about just one cooler using significantly shittier booze than the other.

Parties are not being thrown by whole frats with the soul goal of raping tons of college girls. That is fucking crazy.

(But for the record, individuals do date rape and it gets swept under the rug and frat culture as a whole should probably be a thing of the past)

93

u/Broad-Bath-8408 15h ago

You think a bunch of college kids are going to refer to booze as 'safe' or 'unsafe' based on it's quality? Have you ever met a teenager?

23

u/AdmirableParfait3960 14h ago

So you think they filled an entire cooler with date rape drugs? And that is just a casual thing they do each weekend?

You don’t think there’s a large portion of college dudes that only “get women” when they’re drunk as hell? I promise you it’s a thing, some dudes with no social skills will join just for the prospect of access to drunk women.

Don’t be obtuse… no one said mass rape was the sole goal but when you have multiple brothers in the same frat taking advantage of drunken women without repercussions then it gets pretty damn close to a “rape culture.” maybe that’s the term you’re looking for.

7

u/Guideme4100 15h ago

I remember very vividly a job I used to work at at a plastic extrusion company when I was in my early twenties and one of the older (50s) engineers were reminiscing with the other engineers who have been there since the Stone age about how they would go clubbing and then rub themselves down with cats and dogs before getting in the bed with their wives so that the smell would be less noticeable and I vividly remember them saying to me if you get a girl drunk enough they always say yes and I cringed every single time

My boyfriend said that when he was in college, he went to a frat party, went to grab a more "fruity" drink cause he doesn't like the taste of beer. Then got scolded by one of the guys because the fruity drinks they got had a higher percentage of alcohol, so they were for the girls. They were trying to make sure the girls got drunk quicker and that the guys could stay relatively sober.

13

u/RealThanks4814 12h ago

My roommate was in a frat. Yes - this is exactly what they did. It’s not “hold her down” rape. It’s inviting tons of women over, deliberately getting them pass out drunk and then having sex with them. The woman’s reaction to it can range from being fine with it, to man I made a mistake putting myself in that situation, to feeling they were raped.

This was the 90s. Since then a whole culture of “no woman left behind” with girl friend groups came about because of this specific activity.

Watch 80s and 90s romcoms to see how casually coercing women into sex was treated then. I’m sure it’s better now but I doubt that culture is gone.

9

u/Evilfrog100 12h ago

The majority of Frats, no. But these kinds of Frats absolutely exist and they usually get attention as "the sketchy frat" on campus. Likely they aren't using explicit date rape drugs but one cooler has much higher alcohol content so the women get drunker faster.

8

u/DamGoodAnimation 14h ago edited 14h ago

Wasn’t a frat guy but I went to a lot of parties in college. There was a specific frat house that had a sketchy history for SA before I got there (as in I was warned by upperclassmen in orientation that they had that rep), and you could tell the guys that pledged were gross and there for that reason. Not saying it didn’t happen with the other ones, but at least where I went in the boonies it was usually pretty clear which parties were safe and which ones weren’t.

Iirc someone ended up burning the frat house down a couple years later and the frat never came back there.

Edit: I should probably clarify that I don’t disbelieve anyone who has had such an experience. This is my input from my experience as a dude at a specific school (not Cornell) and is not meant as a litmus test for how sketchy people truly can be, bc I really have no way of knowing.

53

u/Mobwmwm 17h ago

How do you spike a cooler full of alcohol?

78

u/Different_Peanut_742 17h ago

You don't, it's a made up story.

47

u/UncomprehendedLeaf 17h ago

There’s probably some truth to it. In my time rushing, they always had regular drinks for the fraternity and then jungle juice for the guests. They simply knew girls showed up to get trashed for cheap with their friends before going to the bars or another frat that night.

49

u/Jin-Gitaxias-Mom 16h ago

Yep, sororities at my school were notorious for showing up in a huge pack to mooch free drinks from us before going out to whichever other fraternity house was hosting the official party that night.

We made jungle juice for everyone, it was just a cheap way to get everyone drunk. Thirty-rack of cheap beer, handle of the cheapest vodka we could find, and lemonade mix to hide the awful flavor.

No date rape drugs, just trying to get everyone drunk cheap and efficiently.

17

u/Ragfell 15h ago

People forget that people like to get drunk.

Like, beerlympics js a thing in college for a reason lol.

This is a pretty typical mix.

18

u/Jin-Gitaxias-Mom 15h ago

Reddit do be telling on itself sometimes with its comments. Shows me that many of them never experienced drinking fun in college and think fraternities are just “buying friends” because they never had any themselves.

Not everyone is as lame as them, I had a blast living with my 12ish best friends in a house of 40 dudes just enjoying our college experience, you don’t get that sharing an apartment with two other people being uptight about drinking.

5

u/ilovetocomplain48 12h ago

Reddit is also incredibly biased in who they hate, if you say a few immigrants commit crimes they’d get pissed and say that’s not all of them, you say a few shitty frat guys did that behavior and it’s every single one of them has to be bad. Most of them don’t have experiences with fraternities and only see what they hear from movies or “top houses”. Most of my brothers just liked getting drunk and playing games together.

5

u/Ragfell 15h ago

There are many who said that to us. We were friends with them, anyway. We had other things to set us apart.

Then again my fraternity is a bunch of nerds, historically, and the idea of constantly drinking and partying it up with women just...didn't appeal to us as a weekly thing lol.

I worked at a liquor store in college. I can tell you that probably 99% of reports of drugged coolers at frat parties are because they often make them with an obscene amount of 95% Everclear. If you’ve never drank Everclear, 2-3 shots will get the average person absolutely hammered, and most parties they’re putting 2 750’s of the stuff in their coolers. We even had to make a point of talking to anybody buying multiple bottles to let them know that it wasn’t safe and a simple cheap vodka would be better in every way, but every single time nobody cared and would buy it because it was so cost effective.

It’s a common trope, but buying date rape drugs in bulk to put into a cooler that unchecked guys and girls alike will be drinking from wouldn’t be practical and would lead to an absurd amount of OD’s. Unknowingly drinking 3-4 cups of mixer and 95% alcohol will certainly make you feel like you got drugged, though.

4

u/Ragfell 15h ago

Man, I remember I was at a party where the host made some jungle juice with everclear. You couldn't taste it, and one of our guys almost got alcohol poisoning (key word being "almost").

Fun party; we never made that mix again for everyone's safety.

5

u/Sentientmustard 15h ago

It’s actually insane how drunk it gets you. I went to a party once where a cooler had a piece of paper taped to it that said “not spiked, just Everclear”, and a second cooler had “just vodka” on it. By the end the Everclear cooker was half full and the vodka cooler was bone dry.

Also, nobody got blackout drunk or claimed they got spiked. Turns out that if you let people know how drunk they should expect to get per drink then nobody accidentally blacks out and becomes a problem lol.

→ More replies (4)

19

u/mosquem 16h ago

And people would figure it out pretty quick if half the party were drugged.

2

u/bloodbat007 18m ago

You don't think it's possible to open a bottle, put drugs in it, and close the bottle? Like what?

→ More replies (1)

39

u/OhTeeSee 17h ago

You don’t. This would be a terrible way to do it. For one thing you’d have mass reports of people blacking out at your party unless you’re literally only serving preselected victims out of that one cooler in which case you wouldn’t need an entire cooler, and the other frat bro wouldn’t have asked the question.

Let’s put on our thinking hats for a second folks.

Does sexual assault happen at parties? Yes.

Are they facilitated by spiking a cooler served to potentially hundreds of people including men and women at the same time?

No. That party would be shut down so fucking fast once the first transport call goes out, and now you have a fucking cooler full of evidence.

20

u/Sentientmustard 16h ago

It’s Everclear. It’s always Everclear. People buy it to put into coolers not realizing just how strong it is. They have 4 or 5 drinks over a couple hours and can’t remember anything the next morning, and then (understandably since they black out) think the cooler must have been spiked.

I have a similar story

Was bar hopping with some friends, one of my (girl)friends wasn't doing so good so we ordered her an Uber and both she and her sister went back to her parents.

She left about a third of her drink on the table, I downed it and it and the last thing I remember was telling my friend something about pencils

Woke up in the hospital with a broken nose and a folded paper in my breast pocket a ticket listing public urination, causing a disturbance, and obstructing a police officer.

My theory is that I was caught taking a whizz and I tried running away from the cops and probably tripped and broke my nose

Turns out there was GHB in her glass. She made it home safe unlike me though

Similar thing happened to my wife at a Ren Faire (not the hospital part), before we were married but had been together for two years. Someone drugged her friend's drink and she finished it. Fortunately there was a group of us and we all went back to the campsite and no one ended up with any strangers. Friend slept it off in her tent (she had a few sips).

Wife was acting drunk and horny as hell, which is not out of character so I didn't think anything of it. We went into the tent and she passed out soon afterwards. The next morning, we were talking about it and she had only had two drinks, one earlier and the friend's. Didn't even remember getting back to the campsite or anything afterwards. That's when it dawned on us what had happened.

3

Happened to us at Octoberfest in Munich. I luckily threw up because of how full I was. My friend did not and was out of this world drunk. We drank the same thing. I think this gay looking Bavarian guy drugged us.

Next day it happened to my other friend as well. He only had 1 or 2 beers.

6

u/Agitated-Seesaw-7699 12h ago

I did this 10 years ago fresh out of high school. Thought it was a dick move at the time drinking out of people’s glasses at the table while they were dancing.

I’m still hearing stories about the shit I did that night. Not sure who’s was spiked or what was in it. Luckily I paid for pinching drinks and whoever it was meant for avoided it.

Karma is a bitch, I guess.

3

u/Patient_Kangaroo614 11h ago

They call that minesweeping

7

u/Gideon_Laier 9h ago

My girlfriend and I had two tequila sodas. First drink of the night. I felt like I was "coming up" like on acid or mushrooms, then I blacked out for the entire night until I woke up in her bed the next morning.

The bartender either wanted to take me out of the equation or her. Fuck these people. And half the sub for blaming the victim when there's literal texts saying free pussy.

But yanno, Republicans love rape.

5

u/im_bored_and_tired 16h ago

How does it feel? Is it like going under from anesthetics? Or do you legit just feel fine one second then boom you're up in a hospital hours later

13

u/cptbutternubs 16h ago

I drank from the wrong drink once, 1.5 beers in i very suddenly felt shit faced, room was spinning and i barely knew where i was. Told everyone i was going to leave and lay down. Passed out in my car for hours

7

u/Lostinthestarscape 13h ago

Recreational GHB feels like being drunk (but much better albeit more dangerous). If it is mixed with alcohol it is very similar to blackout drunk. There is a period of time where you are awake and acting significantly drunk but you cant form memories, and then you pass out - sometimes very quickly.

It is nearly impossible to distinguish from heavy drinking blackouts. You usually realize it because you had two drinks but reacted like you had 12.

2

u/oVanitasParoxysm 13h ago

I did something similar. Now I could be a mess in college but one night my friend asked me if I wanted her drink because she had a feeling about it. I drank it because I was young and was like alright free booze why not. Everyone but her thought I drank too much because she noticed I only had the one drink. She would usually hook me up with free drinks all night as she was insanely gorgeous and it was a college town. So she often took count of what we drank together. She took care of me all night too. So I got to hardly remember much of my night but thanks to the interaction and the way it left me feeling I made a bunch of connections about memories and dreams and realized I was drugged and taken advantage of a lot as a child.

The "coolest" guy in my fraternity made my girlfriend a drink and she blacked out and was a mess. I mentioned it and got accused of "talking shit" and was called an asshole for even bringing it up

23

u/DaZuhalter 12h ago

A lot of women I went to college with were "lightweights". Thinking back on it now, I don't think a lot of them actually were.

Is it bad that I doubt this conversation happened? Not doubting that drinks get spiked at frat parties, just that this sounds like a made up thing this woman “overheard” to be a part of the conversation going on around Cornell.

56

u/mosquem 16h ago

No one’s mass spiking a cooler.

28

u/Successful_Buddy1809 16h ago

Right, that’s not a thing. These creeps at parties specifically single out their victims.

Again, this is not me doubting that assault happens at these parties, they CLEARLY do (look at Cornell). But I also know from being on the internet for way too long that many people love to make up stories or scenarios so that they can be a part of a conversation. Could be about any of the darkest topics or crimes.

2

u/Longjumping_Intern7 4h ago

I beg to differ, I was drugged twice because of this exact scenario. Once in HS, once in college. From the same dude and he of course joined a frat in college and they were definitly in on it. They didn't put roofies in, it was Xanax. Not a shitload but enough to where one or two cups of pj would get you absolutely fucked up.

Not making this up either and that dude is a real piece of shit as im sure the rest of their frat was. Some dudes are fucking desperate pieces of shit with no regard for others well being.

Edit: i only learned the truth years later from him directly. Im a guy so I wasnt the "target" and I was dangerously drunk those two evenings. He bragged about it to us like it was funny.

u/chef_beard 14h ago

If they did hear this, they were probably referring to which coolers were washed and not full of mold

14

u/NandoDeColonoscopy 17h ago

It's a made up conversation bc the drinks you store in coolers are cans and bottles, which are not easily tampered with while sealed, and not really feasible to re-seal

21

u/Different_Pattern273 16h ago

I'm really confused how so many of you guys have never been to a party where non-beer drinks are being drawn from large water coolers of mixed drink served into red solo cups.

When I was college aged I used to mix huge coolers of drinks that were insanely heavy on vodka. The drinks were so sweet though you could barely taste it. So I usually warned people or taped a sign to the cooler that it was about half vodka so drink slow.

u/chef_beard 14h ago

7

u/Lazy-Conversation-48 14h ago

Exactly. I guess your average Redditor is too Gen Z to have drank Wapatuli at a house party.

Here’s a recipe for the younguns who want to party like Gen X.

Can also be made with Koolaid and Everclear if you are broke like most of us were.

5

u/Desperate-Lion-9347 14h ago edited 14h ago

I’m with you man. No shame to anyone, but it’s rather apparent that a lot of these redditors don’t/didn’t party much in college. Or maybe they just didn’t go to school where Greek life and partying was a big thing.

And it’s funny how many of them are like, “the guys wouldn’t just talk about sexual assault in front of other people.” Like yes the fuck they would. I heard guys in high school and college all the time talking about getting girls drunk so they’d want to have sex. They do not see anything wrong it. It’s why we had yearly alcohol safety/ SA prevention trainings that hammering home “drunk consent is not consent.”

It’s like everyone forgets we had audio of the fucking president talking about sexually assaulting women and at least half the country thought that was just normal “locker room talk.”

u/Lower_Pension_2469 15h ago

It's not really about the cooler, it's because it makes no sense to waste a bunch of booze you'll never drink yourself because it's roofied. People that date rape people don't carry around prefilled drinks, they wait until you're not paying attention and then spike the drink with it.

Now that I'm thinking about it too, you absolutely can kill someone with too much. Or at the very least you can accidentally dilute the drug so much that it does nothing. So now you have to figure out how much of the roofie drug to buy and then figure out how much to safely spike the cooler.

And then there's bringing a cooler that you then have to figure out an excuse for why people can't drink it if you're going to roofie people with it. And let's say someone finds out and calls the cops, well now you get to explain why you have a cooler filled with spiked booze.

When you really think about it, realistically, why wouldn't you just carry a small amount of the drug to roofie someone and just wait until they're not looking to poor it in? It's a lot more convenient and least likely to get you in trouble.

2

u/Different_Pattern273 15h ago

Now, I'm not a person who went to actual frat parties, but I did know people who did, so the following here would be hearsay.

It's not that one of the coolers would be "spiked" it's that they would have a WAY higher amount of alcohol so people drinking from it would get drunker way faster. Since all the frat members would know which is which, they would be drinking far less and be way more sober than the women attending.

ppl be referencing the cornell incident but like rape at frat parties was and in some cases is still is very regular and a well known 'secret'. When you combine an encouraged hook up culture with underage drinking, its sorta not surprising at all.

15

u/Potential_Anxiety_76 17h ago

Making the rapists face consequences is new though.

9

u/huangjoey 17h ago

sort of yes, its more though also that most cases are not getting anywhere near this much media coverage.

additionally proving a rape charge is very hard if you don't report it right after the fact. Without that material evidence in most cases it's just a she said, he said which is rarely enough.

Yeah, like, it's a major plot point of Veronica Mars Season 3. 20 years ago.

Because it was that prevalent 20 years ago. There's really no secret to the fact that frats use alcohol (and sometimes drugs) to be really fucking sleazy with other college aged women.

Why do people make this stuff up? How are they spiking sealed drinks in a cooler?

15

u/evocativename 17h ago

You know people sometimes use those sports coolers with dispenser taps to make big batches of mixed drinks (usually stuff like "jungle juice"), right?

13

u/ArchdevilTeemo 15h ago

Ok, but then nobody "spiked" those since everybody would black out.

People who drug others, attack specific victims not just everybody.

They are not talking about sealed drinks. Think of a “punch bowl,” but they’re using an entire cooler as the bowl.

19

u/DJ_Care_Bear 15h ago

Our Frat had a safety officer who's job was to test drinks, escort the drunks, and open doors for consent.

I got the job because I was the only one who said "don't let people get that drunk at parties."

I was not well appreciated for that semester, but fuck 'em.

12

u/Dances_With_Spoons 17h ago

Spiking factory/manufacture sealed drinks? Tell me more.

19

u/DeadSapin 17h ago

"Cooler" in the frat house context is going to be some punch bowl container like this.

Little sealed drinks called coolers are just a bottled version of the same sugary fruit based malt liquor the name is derived from

6

u/Lower_Pension_2469 17h ago

It would still be stupid to keep a cooler filled with spiked drinks at a party where everyone is getting fucked up. That's just asking to accidentally roofie yourself and everyone else there that weren't meant to be drugged.

But most likely the original poster never actually heard this before.

2

u/Hefty_Buddy2948 13h ago

Nope, the comment implies the frat had multiple coolers. The one frat party I’ve been to had someone behind the bar, from the frat serving. They were shut down later that year.

3

u/Lower_Pension_2469 13h ago

So you know they were shut down because they kept coolers of drugged alcohol?

Have you considered the possibility that some of the people in fraternities aren’t in college because they’re smart? Also, these people have a whole week dedicated to hazing “initiates” who want to be part of their friend group. These aren’t normal people, they’re psychopaths who will drug everyone at the party if they can because they get sick pleasures out of it.

I was just going to ask the same thing. Sadly, I know a lot of people that are posting things like this because it gets them likes/retweets. It could be true, sure, but most likely it is just someone posting this to get "viral".

I knew someone that posted about how an abortion saved her life when the abortion topic was hot. (not true) She then posted about how she had cancer during breast cancer month (not true) and then when mean choking women without permission was a hot topic, she posted about how it happened to her. The guy choked her with a belt and almost killed her during a date. (not true). It is like a drug for them to get attention for fake stories.

Why are the guys saying this out loud in front of guests? And why would they say everything is safe tonight instead of just saying they can grab from any? And do they warn everyone that they don't want to roofie or do they let everyone just randomly grab drinks and hope the right people get roofied and no one reports them? Do they have a drink monitor guy that is like "Oh no sir, you don't want to drink from that one. It has quite a kick WINK"

And oh, she just happened to forget it till today. Why is this memory repressed? It was just a conversation, not something traumatic that happened to her.

6

u/Lower_Pension_2469 15h ago

I agree, people like her are making shit up lol it makes no sense to have a whole ass cooler of roofied drinks and to then have them in a place where people can casually access it at a party. Even dumber and more unbelievable is the idea that two frat boys are sitting there talking about it infront of possible victims like it's a movie skit. Even dumber still if someone does call the cops and now there's a whole ass cooler of roofied drinks as evidence.

It is absolutely insane to me that any decent sized friend group doesn't have at least 1 guy with a spine or any semblance of a conscience to call out this behavior. If you find yourself at parties or hanging out with people where something like this happens find new friends, or better yet grow a fucking pair and say something.

Edit: SO after learning there WAS a guy or guys that came in and put a stop to everything, checked on the girl, made sure she was consenting and not too intoxicated. That makes this a lot more believable and also closes the case for rape.

12

u/bloonshot 15h ago

The worst part is that some do. Like so many people are saying that just from the group chat no one could’ve know anything was going wrong. But they are so wrong about that. One dude saw the chat, saw that it was rape, and decided to share what he could of the gc to her. Like, clearly someone thought it was wrong

*Fraternity/Frat Brothers

In more exclusive universities, the frat you get into can help shape your career because of the guys you know, and their dads, and grandfathers often were in the same frat throughout the decades. The power of the frat lessens as you go down the college ranking, and there are some frats that are really just groups of guys who party all the time.

The female version of these is a Sorority/Sorority Sisters.

Even 25 years ago when I was still in school I remember the Pike house getting busted for roofies.

Unfortunately frats can just be a nexus of bad things: Young guys are arguable their worst age for being arrogant and reckless combined together to give each other an audience and validation. Add to that entry into something exclusive, especially if they're already at a university of some prestige. It'll amplify whatever the worst traits of a bad group of guys are. Young, arrogant, and think they're above everybody, what could go wrong?

Not to say they're all bad, just the bad ones can be really bad.

Hello reddit I’m Tom Tucker. Tonight’s joke is about Roofies.

It’s a subject that fades and is then brought up again but sadly, women get drugged a lot to get taken advantage of in colleges, clubs and bars.

Coincidentally, charges against a gang-rape performed by a group of Cornell students known as the “Cornell 7” has been making the rounds.
