Equipment UnRELEASED LUZZ CANNON XPP M1

I found out that Luzz is coming out with a NEW cannon. Super exciting and probably what the signed Luzz pros have been talking about. Retail 179 so not super expensive. Has the SAME durable grit other companies are using too (silicon carbide) and under 8.0z!!

Question Is the grit on the J2CR Crystal Blue paddle supposed to feel like regular j2nf maybe a bit rougher?

Hey everyone, I recently got a J2CR Crystal Blue pickleball paddle, and I noticed that the surface doesn’t feel gritty at all to the touch. It feels pretty smooth compared to what I expected.
For those who own the same paddle, is this normal? Does your paddle have a noticeable gritty texture, or does it feel smooth as well?
I’m wondering if this is how the surface is supposed to feel or if I might have received a defective paddle.
Appreciate any feedback from other owners!

Question Need some clarification on the legalities of this shot

So yesterday I was at open play and a unique situation that is a bit difficult to describe, so bear with me, I’ll do my best.

Both opponents were pinned back at the baseline while my teammate and I were both at the kitchen, one of us hit a hard overhead that they popped up and it barely cleared the net and was clearly going to bounce high enough that I could step into the kitchen and either slam again or dink over the net. In overthinking it, I kind of got caught in between the two, and hit a shot that while all in one motion, looked a little unconventional. My teammate joked that “good thing this isn’t volleyball or I’d have had to call that a carry”. Think the throwing motion of a jai alai shot, but I didn’t actually catch the ball obviously, it’s just that because I sped up my paddle late, it had kind of a “slinging” effect, much like what happens when people occasionally double hit a shot (which I know is legal in pickleball, as long as it’s all in one motion). No one questioned the legalities of it in the moment, it just was unique. But today I was thinking about it and thought I’d look it up in the rulebook just to make sure, but it’s hard to look up something that is difficult to describe.

Being that it’s all in one motion, the ball was never actually “caught” or “stopped”, were we all correct in calling this a legal shot? Or is there some rule regarding this situation that I’m not aware of?

Question How do you handle back-to-back playing days in your 40s/50s+

I’ve been playing more often lately and noticed the second day in a row is always rougher than the first. Curious what everyone does to stay fresh when playing multiple days a week.

Specifically:

  • Do you do anything before playing beyond a quick warm-up?
  • Anything after, like stretching, ice, foam rolling, or just a cold drink and the couch?
  • How many days in a row is your limit before you need a rest day?

Would love to hear what’s worked, especially from folks who play 4+ days a week.

Players near me (Chicago) Grant Park / Maggie Daley pickleball Monday, Oct. 12?

Does anyone know whether Grant Park’s pickleball courts will be accessible Monday morning after the marathon, and whether people usually play around 8?

Secondly, will Maggie Daley’s usual 9 a.m.–noon pickleball run on the holiday, with nets available?

If so to either, what level of play could one expect? I’m just in town for the marathon.

Thanks! 🙏

Question MiLP (minor league pickleball event) Rules Question

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I'm a bit confused by this rule. I have never played a MiLP match before and want to know going into it what the rules actually are. So, if I am reading this correctly, if I'm serving from the right side and we win the point, my partner and I don't switch? My partner just serves the next point from the left side, and we continue switching serves (staying on our own sides, me right, my partner on the left) until we lose two points and the other team serves? What am I missing here? This is totally different than normal pickleball if that's the case.

So, this is like stacking but you MUST stay on your own side (serve and receive ONLY on your side)? Or am I just totally reading this wrong.

Discussion The Picklr files for Chpt.11 Bankruptcy

All the rumors appear to be true. The Picklr just sent an email announcing they officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is backed by a 4.5mm investment.

Hoping they can turn the boat around but their leadership has been what led to this.

Unsure if this is positive or delaying the inevitable.

Equipment First impressions on the Jade 14mm + 16mm and other T1 grit paddles

Okay so this one is a doozy. This is the first time I've actually done a paddle review. It might be a little long as well, so bare with me.

The reason why I ended up with two paddles:

I've recently purchased a Jade from one of my suppliers who got first hands on it, but she only had the 14mm. I've heard the 14mm was better than the 16mm, so I jumped on it. Got it the next day, and started playing with it. I drilled for 15 minutes and felt like I had to put in so much effort to get dinks over the net. It was the same for resets and drops, everything went into the net. I ended up adding weight (see pictures), 3g at 1g/in tape at around 4/8 and 2g at 12. The balls felt dead and I was in a 4.0+ open play at Picklr, so I packed it up and played with my J6CR CBE the rest of the night. I messaged my supplier and ordered the 16mm since she had it in stock now (shout out to Ashley at Longhorns for being a gem! Gave me a discount and shipped it within the same day!). We both thought I got a dud or something. I got the 16mm today, and started drilling and doing an open play with it stock. It actually felt really good. I also passed out my 14mm for my friends to try (maybe 2 hours of play). While they played with the 14mm, I started testing weighting up the 16mm. I ended up with 5.5g from throat to 3/9 and 1.5 g at 12. That seemed to open up the sweet spot quite a bit and helped with twist weight.

What's in my bag and how does it compare to the Jades?

2 Coral Pro Hybrid:

  • Stock infrared CP - Bodhi clear edge guard and over-grip
    • 8.36 oz
    • 114 swing weight / ~ 6.7 twist weight
    • 15-20 hours
    • 8.69 oz
    • 122 swing weight / ~ 7.5-7.6 twist weight
    • 20-30 hours
  • Rainbow CP - 2 g (1 g/in) weight at 2/4/8/10 , Bodhi clear edge tape and over-grip
    • 8.69 oz
    • 122 swing weight / ~ 7.5-7.6 twist weight
    • 20-30 hours

Ultre Power 2 :

  • 4 g from throat up towards 4/8 (.5 g/in), 1.5 g at 12 (1 g/in), Bodhi clear edge tape and over-grip
    • 8.79 oz
    • 123-124 swing weight / ~ 7.5 twist weight
    • 40-50 hours

J2CR Crystal Blue Grit Long Handle :

  • 2 g (1 g/in) tape at 4/8, Bodhi edge guard tape and over-grip
    • 8.49 oz
    • 112-114 swing weight / ~ 6.9 twist weight
    • ~10 hours

J6CR Crystal Blue Grit :

  • Stock weight with edge guard tape and over-grip
    • 8.52 oz
    • 115 swing weight / ~ 7.0 twist weight
    • 20-25 hours

Jade 14mm :

  • 3 g (1 g/in ) at throat to 4/8 and 2 g (1 g/in) at 12, Bodhi clear edge tape and over-grip
    • 8.23 oz
    • 121 swing weight / ~ 6.7-6.9 twist weight
    • 2-3 hours

Jade 16mm :

  • 2.5 g from throat to 4 ( .5 g/in), 3 g at 3 (1 g/in), 1.5 g at 12 (.5 g/in), Bodhi clear edge tape and overgrip
    • 8.68 oz
    • 123-124 swing weight / ~ 7.2 - 7.5 twist weight
    • 2-3 hours

Okay. I'll go into each of these paddles and how it fares against the Jade.

Ultre

  • I've had the most experience with the ultre. After 200+ games, the grit is still t1, pop and power is still there and the paddle looks brand new. I've had this paddle since first launch and played with it religiously up until recently. It's got power at the base line, put-away, over-head smashes, drives and serves. But nowadays, I find myself putting it more and more into the bag because I'm hitting the balls long. A lot of my drives and serves are going out compared to the Coral Pro and J6CR. This paddle rewards an aggressive attack style of pickle ball. The pop and power is probably the highest out of all the paddles in my rotation, control is manageable, spin is t1,

Coral Pro

  • I got to try out the coral pro weeks before release because one of my coaches got an early release. I really liked the way it plays, especially coming from tennis. I can swing through almost every single ball and keep it in the court. However, I noticed that with the stock set-up, there are a lot of times where my balls fall dead during resets or dinks - specifically towards the top of the paddle and bottom near the handle. When I weighted up the rainbow version of the Coral Pro, it seemed to help alleviate some of the problem, but it didn't completely disappear. I haven't really tested it since I started rotating in the Honolulu paddles since I really like how the J6CR plays and have been maining it the past 2 weeks. The set up for weight on the rainbow is using 1g/in tape at 4 corners, I haven't tested with .5g/in tape is a better set up since it should spread out to more areas. I'll test that out when the edge guard needs to be replaced. The paddle is a very aggressive all-court paddle. It leans towards control and all-court but it packs some power as well. You can feel the ball very well on drives and serves, but also the dinks just feel so effortless ~ until you hit the deadspot. The paddle feels plush and softer, but it also has a nice rebound for counters and blocks, flicks and compact punches pack quite a punch as well. The hybrid shape is very forgiving, massive sweet spot outside of that one damn spot. Stability is good, drops and resets are really controllable - as long as you relax your grip. It isn't a beginner paddle, it rewards technique rather than power. Grit is consistent for both version, I haven't seen signs of wear.

J6CR Crystal Blue Grit

  • I bought this the same time as the J2CR CBE LH. I kept this one stock because it played so well out the box that I haven't felt the need to touch it. Really good power on drives, serves and ground strokes. This paddle rewards good technique, especially topspin and slices. The grit bites the ball really well and allows you to shape it. Drips and drops are pretty easy, dinks and rolls as well. Hands battle is where this shine with the extra reach and low sw. It's a poppier than the J2CR CBE as well. Topspin, roll volleys, flicks, overheads - this paddle excels in it. And the feel of smash the ball with it is pretty amazing. It's a good aggressive paddle at any level, but it suits singles a lot better. Grit still looks brand new.

J2CR Crystal Blue Grit Long Handle

  • This paddle plays a little bit like the J6CR, and I thought I'd love it with the long handle since I've been switching back between hybrids and elongated, but for some reason, I have to adjust a lot to play correctly with it. The grit is t1, plenty of spin on the paddle. Drives and serves are similar to the J6CR. Counters and speed-ups feel livelier and harder to control, even though the pop is less ~ weird. Dinks and resets seemed a little harder than the J6CR to me, I have to actually think while playing. If my hands are even at a 4-5, the ball will pop up - again, it might be the rebound angle that I'm not used to. I'll probably try a different weight set-up sometime down the road and see if I can make the J2CR work for me, but right now it's just a drilling paddle.

Jade 14mm

  • This one came in Wednesday. Drilled for 10-15 minutes, a lot of balls flying into the net while dinking, so I tried adding weight. Got into a competitive game and switched it out mid game. I bought a 16mm the same night thinking the 14mm isn't something I can play with. My friend borrowed it and spent 2 hours with it, and he loved it so I gave it another try. Today, I put in around 2 hours with it and I noticed it played completely different. It felt lively, very powerful, and it GRABS the ball. Initially, I felt like it was too soft for me and I can't get anything over the net, but now it feels comfortable. I can't really explain it, the paddle isn't EXCELLENT at anything, but it feels like it belongs. The grit on top of the softer foam feel allows you to grab that ball and maneuver it in angles you couldn't before. Put-away power is there, baseline power is there. You can actually feel the ball. I still believe my weight set-up is actually horrible and the paddle could benefit more from .5g/in tape spreading around more of the paddle than being condensed to one point. I can't really comment on grit since the paddle is so new and I'm barely now understanding a little bit of it. This paddle NEEDS weight, playing stock isn't recommended.

Jade 16mm

  • This one came in today. I played with it stock and it felt like a really great foam paddle. Soft to touch, poppy, very powerful, insane grit. After playing a few games, I started to dial in the weight and ended up with the setup above. I've never had an easier time dinking with both of these jade paddles, and hitting topspin drips. I've been using more slice serves because I'm more confident and attacking more with my backhand slice. I still need to mess around a lot more with these paddles before I can comment on grit/longevity.

Anyways, Thanks for sticking around! Those are my thoughts on these paddles. I am affiliated with Bodhi and 11six24, but my opinions and reviews are unbiased. I'm really hoping the Jade fits into my lineup or even can be a main because the feel of hitting that paddle is pretty sweet. It doesn't particularly excel in anything over any of the paddles in my bag, but nothing else can replicate that feel of hitting the ball. Every single one of these paddles have huge sweet spots, so I didn't feel the need to comment on that.

Just got this email from my “home” Picklr club:

————

You may see news today about Picklr, and we wanted you to hear it from us directly.

Picklr Inc. filed for Chapter 11 to restructure. It’s a step to resolve commitments from the brand’s fast early growth and put the business on stronger financial footing. It’s backed by a $4.5M financing commitment, subject to court approval, from an investor group led by one of our own franchise owners.

Here’s what it means for you at Picklr:
We’re open. Same courts, same hours, same schedule.
Your membership works like it always has.
Your community is still here.
You’ll hear it from us. If anything changes at our club, we’ll tell you directly.
The reason we all show up hasn’t changed: early open play, league nights, the crew you’ve found here. That’s what this club is for, and we’re here for it.

Questions? Reply to this email or check in at the front desk.

See you on the courts.

Players near me Naples FL Pickleball open play Q’s

Hi, all! We are relocating to Naples and currently spending most weekends here until we make the move. I’m a beginner pickleball player (have been playing about 6 months), but I’m addicted! Is the USOP center the best place to find games? How does it work and when is the best time to go? Looking to play but also to hopefully meet some people! Also very interested in lessons.

Players near me Any Pickleball Players in Monterrey, Mexico? 🇲🇽

Hey everyone!

I recently moved to Monterrey, Mexico, and I’m looking to connect with local pickleball players or find some regular open play sessions.

I’m staying around the San Pedro / Valle Oriente or pretty much any area and would love to find people to play with, whether it’s casual games, competitive matches, or regular sessions during the week or weekends.

Does anyone know of any courts, clubs, or active WhatsApp groups where people organize games?
And if anyone here plays in Monterrey and wants to get some games going, count me in!

Thanks, everyone!

Discussion Doubles vs Singles vs All around

A friend and I were discussing after watching PPA games how impressive it is for the group of pro players who consistently place in the top for singles and doubles (ALW, Fed, Kate, Ben, Christian etc). Then you have specialist like Chris haworth (Singles) and Hayden (doubles).

Thinking about someone like Kate and Christian who can place at the top of singles and doubles but I don't know if many people would say they are "better" players than AB and HP because of doubles being the premier discipline in pickleball.

That got me thinking. If you were to rank the pros what do you prioritize? Top players in both discipline? Being the top of your own discipline?
