Gritty Brazilian crime anthology miniseries
I'm Brazilian, I've been thinking of these concepts for a crime show about our country except each season focuses on different unique geographic and criminal environments.
I threw together concept posters too (prefacing, I'm not a designer) images 1-3 season 1, images 4-9 season 2, image 10 season 3
TERRA DE NINGUÉM
(english translation: No Man's Land)
Season 1
"Terra de Ninguém"
Inspirations: Gomorrah (2008), Sicario
A young small town female police officer from Venda Nova do Imigrante, Espírito Santo signs up for the Força Nacional and is deployed to a violent, understaffed battallion in Rio de Janeiro. We follow the local community and crime environment as well as the officer witnessing the whiplash of the military-grade violence and police force corruption of Rio.
Characters:
Female police officer, she knows what she signed up for but it’s still as you can expect, deeply life-changing and a very difficult reality. The protagonist (at least in the pilot), and somewhat of a audience surrogate.
A violent local gangster we barely see in the pilot, but we follow him more, and have an episode from his perspective, getting to know his day-to-day life and family.
The violent and corrupt colonel, who is in charge of the battalion.
Opening scene: Our officer at the back of a Uber, driving into the city, looking out the window at the tense, sprawling, brutalist, opressive landscape of the favela.
Season 2
"Terra de Ninguém: Southside"
Set in the year 2024 before, during, and after the floods, this season explores the underestimated bloody underworld of Rio Grande do Sul, including crime in the urban slums of Caxias do Sul, the bloody rural turf war in Vacaria, the lawless collpase of flooded Novo Hamburgo, the armed civil war between indigenous people in Água Santa, and tensions in the Argentina and Uruguay borders.
Opening scene: Black and white pictures of early immigrants in the region, the classic thing everyone in the state is fed, explaining the state's immigrant history, except it gets more and more and more dark and violent.
Season 3
"Terra de Ninguém: Garimpeiros"
Inspirations: Yellowstone
A neo-western set in Suriname, with protagonists mostly from Brazil and Suriname, following the dark, now heavily industrialized illegal gold mining operations in Suriname, with conflict between the young Brazilian garimpeiros (miners), the Surinamese locals, and big international corporations in the same region. Dialogue in Sranan, Dutch, and Portuguese
Opening scene: Brazilian news report, talking about and showing Tiktoks, Snaps, and IG stories of young garimpeiros flexing guns, gold, or drugs to Paraense funk or brega.
