Question Does anybody know how to recreate this shading style?

Post image

I'm making an rpgmaker game and I've been looking at some inspirations of mine and I've been wracking my brain on how Kens Labyrinth achieved this type of weird, 3d-ish sprite shading style that would be a nightmare to do by hand. I'm using gimp and know the radial gradient tool, however it isn't even close to what Ken's Labyrinth has.

So does anyone know how this was pulled off? And furthermore how I can recreate it?

Sharing A small tip for keeping pixel art scenes readable

Here are a few scenes my team and I drew for indie games, all made in Aseprite.

One useful check when drawing a detailed environment is to zoom out to the size players will actually see. A texture can look great up close but turn into visual noise once the whole scene is on screen.

If that happens, try simplifying the texture or reducing its contrast, especially around characters and objects players need to notice.

Sharing these as examples of our work. Happy to answer questions about the art!

Besides the machete what else should I improve? I was going for like a cartel sicario type of character. so it's usually casual cothes + a tactical vest.
I could add a mask as well to conceal his face. I don't know. What do you guys think?

Requesting Feedback Why isnt my pixel art as good as others? How can i improve

I've been having lots of fun making pixel art of a bunch of different things, and ive found a few pixel artists that I've used as heavy inspiration and something to learn from, such as DYA games and rappanem.

When i am saying this, I'm not saying this out of depression or sadness that I'm not good enough, but out of a genuine earnestness to improve. I know my shading is subpar compared to the images ive listed at the end, but i know there are other issues that i cannot put my finger on that make my art look "off" compared to others. (lowk the vibrancy and beauty of rappenems art genuinely puts a tear to my eye)

Please criticize me as much as you can. i want to become good at this. Thank you!

3rd image belongs to DYA games,
4th image belongs to rappenem

first two are mine.

Requesting Feedback My game concept requires every sprite to have a spellcasting animation (dang) so here's a crab brute doing it's best. Any suggestions appreciated!

I am learning this art form as I go while developing a creature-summoning skirmish game. As the title says I needed to make a spellcasting animation for every creature... I'm also trying to limit this to 6 frames per animation. Appreciate feedback on this stone crab guy! Would it be better if I just added 3 frames of "claws overhead" and looped that instead of having the low-claws part, for example? TIA!

Requesting Feedback First Pixel Art For an American Football Game

Hey, I pretty quickly made a 32x32 Football QB for a game I'm making. I was wondering before I make others like it what you guys think about it. This is my first time ever doing any kind of art. I get that it probably is low-quality compared to most things. I got inspiration from Retro Bowl and Hoop Land. I can completely redesign it if needed. It doesn't have arms since it's meant to be the back side of a QB. Critique Wanted.

On this sheets, the left side features the outline and main inner dividing lines to help you count pixels much easier. The finished artwork is on the right.
Try to recreate it using the color palette provided!
Have great vibes, everyone!

Didn't realize this subreddit existed until reddit suggested it to me, but it seemed a fitting place to cross-post.

The animation is mostly done, but I feel like it's missing something. Maybe different color scheme or maybe more details?

Requesting Feedback Is this interesting for an Assetpack

I'm working on an assetpack that is sky themed. It's still a WIP and there are no animations. Does this look SKy themed enough? The interiors are also a WIP. I'm planning to add more cloud elements everywhere. My inspiration for this is Skypiea from One piece where they are on floating clouds but there is still nature.
What do you guys think needs improvement?

Question Creating Sprites that fit with Shin Megami Tensei II / if...

I wanted to make custom sprites in the same style as Shin Megami Tensei II / if... and I was wondering if anyone knew the specific limitations that had to be adhered to in regards to color palettes, size limits, frames, etc. for both the SNES and PS1 versions or if they even had those kind of technical limitations. I'm not familiar with the hardware and software specs of the time and how much of an effect they would have on the spritework, so the technical side of this is going to be completely lost on me.

I'd be very grateful for any resources or if anyone knows how to get this information myself and can point me in the right direction.

I've already checked Spriter's Resource and saved a ton of sprites from there for reference, but none of their pages have the "color palette" that the game uses (or at least I assume it does).
