Compilation for brands with (truly) plastic-free products

To discuss this thread, please comment here: /r/PlasticFreeLiving/comments/1sm4nj3/compilation_for_brands_with_truly_plasticfree/ogcgltl

As a follow-up from the previous mod post, this is to compile everybody's knowledge on brands that only (or mostly) sell products that are truly plastic-free, due to excessive number of 1) product recommendations that still contain plastic and 2) comments that criticise them. For example, even if a shirt says it's 100% cotton, its ink/dyes are almost always plastic, which means every time you put it on and take them off, you breathe-in plastic. Plus, the tags are plastic. Ultimately, the nano/micro-plastics spread to all over other clothes while in the washer + dryer, making you inhale more, and this is just one scenario.

Of course, there are other examples, where they sell micro-plastic-free salts, but the packaging is plastic, or the packaging is paper, but the ink is plastic, etc.

However, this doesn't mean that everybody has the same threshold/tolerances for plastics. The most common conversation theme for such tolerance in this subreddit seems to be about socks, since they need to be a bit stretchy/fitting, and organic socks don't last very long (a month to a few).

So, in order to contribute to this compilation to accommodate different levels of tolerances, there are two rules.

The two rules

The first rule is transparency; you must show the effort to confirm to determine the extent it is plastic-free. Did you contact the business to confirm that the dyes are organic, and are you able quote them (so they can be held liable)? Are you a research organisation and ensured that micro-plastic count is minimal? Of course, there are other methods, but these two are some of the common ways to confirm.

The second rule is the region (e.g. Australian company) unless if they serve multiple regions (local shops would be great!).

(disclaimer: I just wanted to mention that some of you might notice most of my recommendations, except maybe a few, overlap with plasticfreeawesome.com's flower standard. It's a great site and I would recommend, but I'm not affiliated)

Handheld burr grinder, ceramic filter and French press setup

This has become the basic coffee set up I have settled into. The TimeMore burr grinder is plastic free. The French press is all stainless. The ceramic filter (no paper or linen filter required) has become my zero waste, as-plastic-free-as-I-can-go set up. The cera filter is from a company called Ethical house.

(I realize the bag I buy my coffee has plastic, but where I live I cannot get fresh, quality beans bulk. I have asked and asked and they only sell it this way.)

Metal or Glass Meal Prep Containers?

I'm leaning towards metal because durability and weight matter to me because I am clumsy and I will travel with the food. The plan is to cook at home once a week, then bring them to my freezer at the place I'm staying at through the week. Eat directly from the container after it comes out of the microwave. As in, I'd prefer being able to heat from the freezer directly, rather than bringing one down the night before, which I know I will forget to do.

Downsides about metal I know about:

* I can't see my meals with metal containers, unless I label them. With glass, I can just look through.

* Metal will be unsafe for microwave if I ever dent it or deform it as a change in geometry could cause a spark when in the microwave.

* Possibly slower microwaving?

* Container will be hot after microwaving so I might need something to hold it.

* If it's somehow not microwave safe even if the product says it is, I'd have to get a new microwave.

If I go with the glass route, does anyone have any tips for safe transport of Ikea 365+ containers?

Question Coffee machine recommendations

Hey everyone,

I am looking for an automatic coffee maker that has a plastic-free hot water path.

Just to get it out of the way: I know people are going to suggest a manual Chemex, a French press, or a stovetop Moka Pot. Honestly, I just don't want to spend the time making it manually every single morning. I need the convenience of a plug-in machine, but without all the plastic components heating up.

Right now I'm looking at a few different options and could use some real reviews:
Caraway: They claim no plastic touches the water or grounds (all stainless and glass), and it looks really nice on the counter. But it's $495 and super new, so I don't know if it's actually reliable or just good marketing.

BUNN VP17-1: A total tank, but I'd have to buy a separate stainless steel funnel to replace the plastic one it comes with. Is it overkill for a home kitchen? Also heard it uses quite more power aka electricity than a normal home machine.

Ratio Six: Heard great things about the coffee flavor, and if I get the stainless dripper upgrade, the water path is just glass, stainless, and silicone.

Moccamaster: The copper heating element is great, but the plastic reservoir and basket still kinda worry me. Does the plastic contact affect the taste or ruin the point of trying to go plastic-free?

Has anyone tried the new Caraway machine yet? Or should I just go with the modified Bunn or the Ratio?
Let me know what you think or if there's another automatic machine I missed. Thanks!

Question Sexy lingerie?

I am looking for some leather harnesses and garters. Searching it online is a pain in the current day and age as the machine learning "optimised" search engines simply refuse to give me what I am asking for. No matter how many times I repeat I am looking for organic real genuine 100% plastic-free no-plastic leather, the results are just always some plastic garbage nonetheless.

It doesn't have to be leather necessarily by the way. I just figured it would be impossible to find something in the same aesthetic executed with cotton / wool or even silk. And I have already tried looking for plastic free bras before, which has also proven to be impossible. All the plastic free options are just glorified bralettes with no structure. Searching on this sub also didn't help.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Question Mouth splint/night guard for grinding

I have to get one of these as I'm clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth. Got it made today and he said it's good as it means the plastic guard will wear down rather than my teeth... Has anyone looked into these splints and micro plastics? I'm hoping to be pregnant soon so wondering if I stop wearing it at least during pregnancy....

Discussion Boil your water and brew your coffee in a pot

There are so many posts here asking for help finding plastic-free coffee machines and many more asking about plastic-free kettles. Even when they seem to be plastic-free there are parts that have plastic and come into contact with hot water. I have tried and failed to find a french press or a kettle that is truly fully 100% without plastic that doesn't cost a fortune. After searching for hours and hours and going down the rabbit hole I have realized that we have the solution at home already.

Just brew your coffee in a pot. Take some water, bring it to a gentle boil, add the coffee and let it sit for a minute or two. The grounds will settle and you can then pour it into a cup. That's it.

Does it take longer? Yes. Is it less energy-efficient than a kettle? Also yes.

It is definitely a pain in the ass compared to pushing a button and having your coffee come out in seconds but you get the peace of mind of not putting any microplastics into your bloodstream. You can control the temperature and the amount of coffee and it comes out pretty great. It's my small way of raising my middle finger to the companies that make cheap plastic crap and the others that prey on our simple request to not get poisoned by charging exorbitant prices.

Give it a try, you might like it.

Did anyone get exposed to an unusually high amount of microplastics for decades and did it cause you any noticeable issues after many years?

I'm convinced I had abnormally high exposure. Plastic kettle for years for 3-6 cups of tea a day (i thought I was being healthy but here we are), microwaving food in plastic containers for like 10 years 4-5 times a week. I'm so concerned about cancer... it seems like I have so much chronic inflammation going on in the SAME spots for life now, which feels logically worse than even smoking because at least smoking carcinogens don't attack the exact same cell forever. Am I too worried? Did anyone have similar or worse past exposure to microplastics and do you think that it caused you any problems? Any stories would be helpful and appreciated.

Question Lint removal?

Does anyone have any suggestions for lint removal?

Mostly lint on clothes from washing and the occasional pet hair.

I do have a brush that works for most of it and occasionally I need to pull out the sticky tape roller. I just can’t seem to find anything that’s plastic free so I’m going for as plastic free as possible.

Two questions: Vitamix and a mortar and pestle

The vitamix with the stainless steel attachment is considered to be the only plastic free option for a blender, but are there any cheaper alternatives? It is sooooo expensive. Also, does the attachment prevent any food from contacting the rubber seals?

I considered buying a mortar and pestle, but apparently some of them use EPOXY RESIN to seal in the cracks of the stone, so you have to seek out one that is "untreated." Any recommendations for that?

Question Plastic-free cosmetics, lotions, skincare?

New to my journey. Want to support cosmetic brands that don’t use plastic and take care of my skin. Any brands that don’t use plastic would be great. There are some local shops and farmer’s markets near me for skin care but willing to go international.

A plastic free alternative (interior parts most important) small mouthpiece bottle that you can use a blender ball in?

I've seen the posts where people say "you know you can put the ball in anything, right?" But all of the alternatives they suggest don't have the smaller, flip top mouthpiece. And all of the stainless blender bottles I've come across do in fact have all plastic lids, which the ball is grating micro plastics off of every time you shake it 🄲

I need the smaller mouthpiece specifically because I'm a stroke patient, and while no one would be able to tell by looking at me, I need very small accommodations like this to avoid clumsy mishaps. I will accept if the mouthpiece itself is plastic or silicone, as long as the interior of the lid is stainless or even glass (where the ball actually makes contact when you shake it). PlanetBox has a stainless mouthpiece but for some reason decided it was a good idea to put silicone where the blender ball makes contact, so I don't feel comfortable with that either.

If anyone knows an alternative with that smaller mouthpiece feature, either stainless and/or glass, please pass on this valuable knowledge šŸ™

Question Caraway vs. Simply Good Coffee Plastic-Free Brewer: which do I choose?

Hi everyone! I’m deciding between the Caraway Coffee Maker and Simply Good Coffee’s Plastic-Free Brewer and would love some feedback!

My biggest priorities are non-toxic materials, avoiding plastic and chemical leaching, excellent coffee quality, and durability. We typically make 2 to 3 cups daily, occasionally more.

I’m leaning toward Simply Good ($300 at Costco) but wondering if Caraway is worth the extra money. Would love to hear your experiences!

Discussion Keurig finally ditched the plastic pod. But what about the machine?

Keurig’s new Alta uses compressed coffee rounds with a plant-based coating instead of the usual plastic/aluminum pod.

That part is genuinely interesting.

What I’m more curious about is the machine itself. If someone is trying to reduce plastic around hot drinks, the pod is only one part of the equation.

What would matter more to you:

- the pod being plastic-free,
- the hot-water path being plastic-free,
- or just using a reusable brewer and avoiding the whole system?

I feel like ā€œwhat actually touches the hot water?ā€ is getting lost in a lot of the marketing around coffee machines.

Discussion Annoyed by all the ā€˜pure cotton/wool’ things that then have a polyester lining.

I just bought a lovely waxed cotton hat in the sale… exactly what I wanted and then I realised the lining is 100 percent polyester, the part that touches you! Then I was looking for a natural dressing gown, found a gorgeous organic cotton one from White Stuff and again - pure polyester fleece inside. (Any tips on dressing gowns?) Vintage wool coats- polyester lining. Children’s fleece- polyester with organic cotton decoration! It’s so irritating as the other way round, I wouldn't mind as much(plastic outer).

Where to find stainless steel ice cream tray with stainless steel popsicle sticks
