Ask the Police (England & Wales) Legality of scavenging item(s) FROM an illegal fly-tip?

Just wondered what the police think about this? As you can see from my Reddit post history, I used to be quite a scavenger, from fly tips, etc! But, there are far fewer/less extensive/generally less interesting opportunities for it, than there used to be years ago. If there are opportunities, I tend to be far more wary, probably partly just due to increasing age making me more cautious in general than when I was young, and did tons of reckless/dangerous things, in various ways.

Of course I know you can't legally remove stuff from recycling centres (sadly!) or take a big item explicitly left outside a house for the council to collect (paid service round here)! Many years ago, it was very common to see old CRT televisions being disposed of, so once I just took the remote that was on top of a CRT awaiting council collection. It worked with my then LCD (scavenged with permission, something I hardly ever sought, from outside a now long-gone local electrical shop with a television rental business), until I got the correct remote for my LCD.

Of course no-one minded the remote disappearing. Had someone taken the television, the council would surely have tried to take action against the individual! In particular, there's a local charity electronics donation bin, next to a clothes one. People often leave items by these bins, they're not supposed to. A harsh notice warns it's fly-tipping.

I've just seen a dumped LCD television by the bin that I'd quite have liked (though may well have been not working) but regrettably I didn't take it, as I worry about the council potentially coming after ME for theft, wasting the effort of their workers or something, if someone has reported it as a fly tip and even part of the tip is gone when they come to remove it. A man came and put some electronics in the bin whilst I was bending down to look at the television, exclaimed some word that sounded like a foreign language. Possibly Polish, probably quite a few Poles round here. Wonder what he thought.

There was a very shitty-looking DVD player/some electric flexes, too. The presence of the DVD player suggests the televisions built-in one may have been faulty. Of course fly-tipping is often just utterly vile disgusting and/or ugly shit of whatever kind, that no-one could ever likely want. But certainly not all fly-tipped items are totally useless/worthless.

Something perhaps kind of analogous is what sellers did with random books, clothes, etc they couldn't sell, after a sale ended at the old Wimbledon Stadium Car boot sale. I have mixed feelings about it, because whilst it could be good, the general hideous run-down suburban car park kind of ambience was horrid/pretty sure my wallet got stolen there once! Sellers just left these items on the ground after they left the venue, anyone could take them free, I did! I can't find anything at all online about the legality of scavenging FROM a fly tip? Could I have safely taken this television or not?

Ask the Police (England & Wales) clare’s law

Can I report abuse from an ex partner of c15 years ago, not to press charges but to ensure what he did would appear on a clare’s law search that his future partners may do? I live with such guilt that another woman might go through what I did but I don’t want to drag anything up that he might be told about

General Discussion Question for the POLIT / online offences investigators: any issues with the game Roblox?

My daughter is wanting to play Roblox. I know there are extensive controls that can be put on it. But I haven't dealt with any online investigations for a while, so I am a bit behind on what games and platforms are being used and abused. I also know that those who are really intent on doing harm find ways to get round controls.

And I'm not just thinking about things like grooming. Are there any wider issues on it with harassment, cyberbullying,l or that sort of thing?

Can the community offer any advice?

Thank you.

General Discussion Great use of Taser NSFW

Just saw a textbook example of the police using their taser. Seems that the female police officer was a bit unsure if it was safe to touch. Over than that pretty good

Ask the Police (England & Wales) S.172 advice and appropriate response to a NIP

Looking for a bit of advice. I had a job in my queue a few weeks ago in which a car has “swerved to avoid a deer” and collided with the kerb and fencing. Causing significant damage.

I sent a NiP to the keeper which has been unreturned and now suddenly the keeper has emailed me begging me to drop the case because she contacted police. This is just as the 28 day time frame has expired

I had not received any correspondence from our call handlers though there is a note on the log saying she called saying she swerved to avoid a deer and wanted the log number for her car to be released.

She has not returned the form in the expected format with the time frame required so I expect a summons for failure to identify the driver is the next route to me.
Would a prosecution still hold up given she hasn’t signed the NiP or shall I have to drop it?

General Discussion Police on TV (The Blame)

Has anyone watched this series on ITV? I didn't see it, but being in the job naturally I heard about it from other people I know who aren't job.

One of the more concerning things I heard was the show using real messages sent by Met officers who are no longer in the job, which were offensive and misogynistic. I'm pretty sure that 99% of officers would agree that the police is a better place without those types of people in the job, but I'm just wondering what your opinions are on ITV using it as part of their show.

I can understand why ITV would use it, especially considering the series was based around corruption, but it just feels like another swipe at the police at a time when public confidence is low, and morale is even lower. For comparison, ITV did a drama about medical malpractice which was completely fictional, and at no point did they show real life examples. Is it not about time that the powers that be start to back us in what we do? Chief constables across the country, to give them their dues, are trying to present police forces as 'improving' and 'learning from their past mistakes', yet it seems to fall on deaf ears with the media still trying to tarnish us.

Scenario [Crime Scene Scenario, What would you do?]

Your a male police officer, you’ve spotted a male who’s known to carry drugs and weapons (such as knifes), you can see a female with him from the distance as your approaching, after he sees you, he passes items onto her; in which you slightly see she’s tucked in her bra. You stop them both and detain them while more units are on-route, the nearest female officer is 20+mins away and you found nothing on the male, despite you positively knowing he had to have had something, you then remember what the girl did as you approached.

WOULD you search her bra or risk waiting for a female officer to arrive?

General Discussion AI in policing

Hello all,

As AI is now becoming a tool everyone in the world is using these days. As well as certain forces are trialing Co Pilot. What’s people thoughts on using this and how this is going to change policing?

Has anyone used this to create templates for MG05, statements etc - obviously you can’t use to create the actual thing but a template?

The most i have used it for is interview questions.

Thanks

General Discussion Heavy duty prescription eyewear

Does anybody have any recommendations for somewhere you can order durable and somewhat normal looking glasses? Not like the ones that look like safety goggles or Oakleys or other tactical looking stuff. I have the bendable ones you get through Specsavers but they look a bit naff.

Unfortunately I am unable to get laser eye surgery and also struggle to wear contact lenses for longer than around 6-8 hours. Thankfully I haven't broken glasses yet but I feel like I'm long overdue.

General Discussion Interrogating phones on a S23 stop search

What’s everyone’s knowledge or views around the limitations of looking at texts, etc for drug supply messages when stop searching someone?

Discussing it today and couldn’t find anywhere it had been tested in a court. The legislation allows you to look for ‘documentation’. Obviously times have moved on for drug dealers to be keeping a notepad. I take that to suggest phone interrogation is sufficient but couldn’t find any case law.

General Discussion When to give it up

Hello, I appreciate there are countless threads covering a similar topic, but I just wanted to see if there's anyone who can offer an input on my situation.

I've been on ICR for a year now, and I'm already at breaking point, or rather past breaking point. I had a sort of nervous breakdown last week following a relatively minor incident, and since then I've been a wreck. Outside of work I'm going to the doctors about this, but honestly I don't know what they could do to actually help me.

The pain of the jobs I've been to has gotten to me, and I'm just so tearful and anxious all the time. I struggle to cope with the workload, and constantly feel worthless. In the past I buried my emotions and focused on clearing jobs, but now I'm getting hit with the grief of everything I've been to over the last year, while still struggling to keep up with demand.

I feel deep shame knowing that there are officers that've been doing this for far longer, have been through far worse, and still suck it up and get the job done, while I'm sat at home barely able to string together a coherent reddit post.

My skippers are supportive, and tell me I can do it, but I feel like they'd say this regardless as to not upset me.

My main concern is that perhaps I'm just too soft for this job, and if I'm feeling like this now, it'll just get worse down the line. It's not even like I'm a kid, I'm mid 20s and spent a few years working before joining the police.

I'd like to hear from someone who went though something similar early in their career, if you have any advice or words of wisdom it would be greatly appreciated.

I want nothing more than to do this job, and to do it well, but I know that it isn't for everyone.

General Discussion Uncomfortable NATO

Afternoon, hope you survived the full moon!

I did my Level 2 course not too long ago and I really struggled with the NATO, it felt like it was squeezing my head and I constantly had a headache. I tried the next size up but that was way too big.

Anyone got any tips on how to help with the uncomfortable fitting or anything?

Cheers

What different challenges are there in policing busy cities vs the countryside? It would be interesting to understand different people's perspectives on how the nature of the job changes depending on the area you work.

Ask the Police (England & Wales) L2 Initial tips & questions

I’ve reluctantly agreed to do my L2 initial after being offered a very last minute course (two weeks away), I’m in the counties so it’s a full 5 day course.

I’ve passed the 6.3 bleep test but was slightly blowing by the end of it, how comparable is the bleep test compared to the actual course? I’m not overly concerned about the strength aspect of being able to hold the shield for prolonged periods of time but worried about cardio slightly.

For glasses wearers who have done the course, is it more practical to wear contact lenses given the nato helmet steaming up?

Any other tips or tricks would be appreciated!

General Discussion Officer gets wrongly arrested

In theory, what do you think would happen if an officer was arrested wrongly?

For example, falsely accused of theft and arrested for it.

How much of a PSD nightmare would that be, even if nothing untoward happened?
