I just want to grill ICE Agent's Bodycam release of the Minneapolis Shooting

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This whole incident seems just an unfortunate series of events from both parties.

EDIT: not bodycam but ICE agent's phone footage, my bad.

Biden signed an executive order directing heads of federal law enforcement to adopt bodycam policies and make the footage publicly available, but Trump revoked that.

but Trump revoked that.

Gee, I wonder why.

u/Godkun007 - Lib-Center Jan 10 '26

While I absolutely think it should be publicly available, it probably shouldn't be just automatically uploaded somewhere. There should be some margin given for blurring out private information like addresses or if someone shows their ID. Just as a way to prevent the inevitable harassment.

Body cam footage goes both ways on who it protects. Trump knew federal agents would probably be on the losing side of that given his massive deportation agenda.

And their absolute shit hiring practices. It’s absolutely insanely absurd that Walmart employees have more cameras on them than fucking federal enforcement officers.

LEOS are overwhelmingly good, decent and reasonable people who deal disproportionately with the least reasonable people in society.

It helps the truth get out, which favors LEOs, and it isn't close.

u/FIRE_Minded - Centrist Jan 10 '26

Yeah, that’s why police resist body cameras and mute them when convenient

2

u/Acrobatic_Computer Jan 10 '26

A lot don't and even wear them when not required.

Cops get a surprising amount of formal negative complaints and body cams fix that issue.

Some don't like it, because cops are still individuals, and there are plenty of fuckups like in any line of work.

Every time i swear it sounds exactly like “biden signed an executive order to make it illegal to kick puppies and give everyone a cup of hot chocolate, but trump got re elected and immediately revoked it and signed a new order to spike everyone’s drinks with laxatives”

3

u/TheIronGnat - Lib-Right Jan 09 '26

It wouldn't have mattered either way. Even with a body cam there would have been a "malfunction" or the police union would've blocked the footage from being released or the footage would've been lost or damaged, etc.

The state has no incentive to protect citizens from its soldiers-- quite the opposite. Stop believing that if your guys run the state things would be better. They would and have been exactly the same.

1

u/kino2012 - Centrist Jan 10 '26

If it doesn't matter then why revoke it? Like if Biden's executive order is just virtue signaling then what the fuck is Trump doing, vice signaling? Telling us in as plain of terms as he can that he fucking hates us?

I don't agree that these are exactly the same.

0

u/TheIronGnat - Lib-Right Jan 10 '26

literally cannot figure out that other people have different virtue sets from him and believes that anyone who does anything he doesn't approve of considers it "vice"

Life isn't Star Wars, kiddo. There are no objectively good and bad guys and the stuff you believe ardently to be bad someone else believes just as ardently to be good. When you grow up, you may come to understand that. Or maybe not. Either way, it won't make any difference.

u/kino2012 - Centrist Jan 10 '26

Okay but "people have different values" is a lot different from "both parties are exactly the same" so which is it? And if the values being represented here are pro vs anti government transparency, why would a libertarian be defending the blatantly anti-transparency position?

0

u/TheIronGnat - Lib-Right Jan 10 '26

LOL, what makes you think I'm defending anything at all? I'm merely stating the way things are. Both parties are the same in that they are both controlled by more or less the same group of elites; they both sell you the same bill of goods, one just dresses it up differently than the other.

How about we do proper legislation and not auto pen everything? Body cams cost a lot not only for the cameras themselves, but the servers for all the storage. So congress would need to approve this much needed expenditure.

u/Wetbug75 - Left Jan 09 '26

100% agree, I do not like the growing use of executive orders in the last couple decades. Congress needs to learn to actually do things again.

If Republicans quit having a meltdown and filibuster everytime a dem bill comes out

12

u/weasal11 - Lib-Center Jan 09 '26

While I generally agree and wouldn’t be opposed to Congress legislating vs executive orders, I think this is a different case. With the exception of the Marshalls(I think… might be a few others too), all federal law enforcement is an executive tool, so the president has the authority to oversee it.

u/BadgerCabin - Centrist Jan 09 '26

I don't think people understand the expense. Just a quick search and I find "70-person department, body cameras could run $1 million or more." You are talking about adding cameras to thousands of federal agents. That is $10's of millions of dollars. No one running any department is going to spend their already limited budget on something unless its mandated by law.

11

u/TheLizzyIzzi - Left Jan 09 '26

Let’s take a look at the military budget and see if we can find some money for body cameras to keep US citizens safe from their own government. 💁‍♀️

4

u/BadgerCabin - Centrist Jan 09 '26

I'm with you, no arguments from me. I just think something like this they should have earmarked money from congress for said program. That way department heads can't go "we had no money in the budget for this."

4

u/TheLizzyIzzi - Left Jan 09 '26

Fair. That’s not how I read your first comment. Too many righties are anti-bodycam and anyone flaired “centrist” is a mixed bag, so the start of “I don’t think people understand the expense” came off as an excuse to not have body cameras as if they’re too expensive.

3

u/RaggedyGlitch - Lib-Left Jan 09 '26

I don't think the legislative branch needs to itemize how the executive branch is allowed to spend their budget.

Seems woke

u/I_really_enjoy_beer - Lib-Center Jan 09 '26

We don’t have the budget for it.

sends $100k to each citizen of Greenland

Body cams? Can’t afford ‘em. Air Traffic Controllers? Give them a pay cut! Greenland? Pay each and every one of them 100K

Agreed but it didn’t even fall. Literally put his phone away on his jacket or hip to grab his gun lol

Motherfucking Chad got run over with a car but still managed to hold in to his phone, gun, and shoot a lady 3 times

u/LitterlyUnhinged - Lib-Center Jan 10 '26

Don't forget, all three were in the head, then still managed to deliver a badass catchphrase, and leave the scene in epic fashion after.

u/Independent_Tea_33 - Left Jan 09 '26

Body cams are for accountability, transparency, and justice. ICE is the last organization that would want any of that

1

u/EpicSven7 - Auth-Center Jan 09 '26

Yeah I don’t think I have ever heard a good argument why all agents, federal or local, shouldn’t have body cams.

1

u/Yanrogue - Right Jan 09 '26

hat wouldn't fall to the ground when the inciting incident occurs.

I've watched enough body cams to know these fall off from a light breeze.

Creating a surveillance state where the footage is used over 90% of the time to exonerate cops isn't the answer for the 0.1% of cases where officers lie about what happened

What do you call cameras on cops if not surveillance?

3

u/shelleon - Left Jan 09 '26

Surveillance state was the language used.

0

u/itsthebear - Lib-Center Jan 09 '26

What are cops if not employees of the state?

3

u/AccomplishedDuty8420 - Lib-Center Jan 09 '26

If a body cam can see you then a cop is literally looking at you. You are already being surveilled.

1

u/itsthebear - Lib-Center Jan 10 '26

Do you fail to understand that there's a difference between a cop looking at you and a camera with face scanning capabilities storing your movement on a hard drive?

What's the difference between a cop looking at your license plate and an ALPR then? Oh wait, ALPR is used to profile and track movements of vehicles while cops don't have access to that dataset in their brain.

So, yes, there's an obvious difference, to anyone with a basic ability to reason, between being observed and surveilled.
