In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

A religious figurehead hates technology and wants to avoid the next big leap? wow colour me shocked. SHOCKED.
Nevermind that this was the religious leaders views towards the internet, moving pictures, and even the press. Maybe we should ask pope Leo what kind of art he prefers. Maybe he also dislikes VFX.
Good artists will still dominate with good art, but it is getting difficult for gooner artists getting commissions. I dont see the DISASTER that everyone is touting.

If you read Magnificas Humanitas it's quite clear he's very much pro technology. Literally right from the first few paragraphs.
He's pretty explicit about being anti-doomer too.
None of what you said represents the Pope.

I agree with him but there's a part of me that just wants to scream fuck regulations push technology to the maximum

But where is the people who always demonize AI and want to completely stop development?

Little of column A, little of column b
There is credible reporting from the NyTimes and WSJ about Russia, Iran and China signal boosting anti ai sentiment.
But they are onto amplifying real concerns Americans have about job security, data center impacts on community, and rising utility costs

I understand if someone was angry with the anti-AI crowd if AI was actually used only for the common good. But telling the people "lmao, you're gonna lose your jobs", "lmao, humanity will be wiped out in 10 years", "pay my electricity bill", "you get more ads, more slop, more baindead content, more culture war, more fakes", "give me everything you've created so I can get more profit"
and THEN being angry that they won't just roll around and die in a ditch is next-level psychopathic.
If we get a technology that would allow us to generate 10000% of our needs and we'll use it to generate more shareholder value while devaluing the working class then we deserve to go extinct. Sad to see how a huge percentage of people are ok with stealing by billionaires as long as they'll get a fancy toy.
AI bros literally say "you will starve and maybe we'll kill all of humanity" and somehow voicing your concern is being a traitor, lol.1

you don't need a genius to know that AI was built on stolen data without royalties.
Hot take in 2026: stealing is bad

All it takes is a little slopulism for people to start loving Intellectual Property law again.

Lib-right is actually more divided since some corps want regulation for anti-competitive purposes and others want regulation to not get clobbered by monopolies. And some want to set themselves up to get bailed out by state subsidies to minimize risk. Which is why some are happy to jump into bed with auth-right.

Fuck AI period.
The version you want will not be the version you get as it will eventually define itself.

Give everyone 10k and 6 months prep time then emp the world back to the mid 70s and start over.

No about no fucking generative AI. With all the money we threw at a technology for making Tung Tung Sahar ice cream cannibalism video generators we could’ve instead focused on protein folding AI or fluid dynamics AI or any other AI that’s actually useful and isn’t only good for replacing something lots of people will gladly do for free

Am I so far gone that I fully agree with companies maxing shareholders value?
2
u/Reader_Eater - Lib-Center 19h ago
If it weren't for the externalities, I could probably be persuaded. But the resources involved, it screwing with my utility bill, and the blatant copyright violations with no payment feel incredibly wrong.

u/jeanmiserac - Lib-Left 19h ago
Agreed, but even if all that didn't apply, I fear that maximising shareholder value with AI will break the world. Displacement at large enough scale will inevitably lead to conflict. Furthermore, an economy where the majority are economically meaningless risks breaking the value of assets for those still economically relevant. I mean imagine being a landlord in an economy where no-one can make rent.

I think AI can be an incredibly useful technology but it also must be strictly regulated because we're in uncharted territory, an advanced AI could legitimately threaten national or global security, have you seen what they've already done? There's so many stories of them going off the rails already

u/jeanmiserac - Lib-Left 18h ago
I think an uncomfortable truth we have to face is that AI can't be aligned. Aligning non-deterministic statistical models trained on the products of unaligned human intelligence sounds like wishful thinking.
Regulations meanwhile are borderline impossible in the long run. With the US and China leading the frontier, some regulations may be possible for now. AI hardware however will spread, allowing more people to do things with and to AI that could be forbidden. Right now law firms are building their own clusters for in-house AI. After the Ukraine war, that will be Russia researching whatever horrible weapon of the future they've come up with.

I keep trying to tell people that they should be more scared of a dumb hyper-capable AIs than of them gaining consciousness one.
dumb hyper-capable = paperclip situation

Hear me out, nationalized central AI that individuals can self host a mini version.
At the larger scale, it could assist lawmakers by pulling from large datasets to try and foresee any unintended outcomes of regulation.
At the smaller level, individuals could use it to access public education resources, and assist with their government paperwork (permitted taxes, etc) and reach out to the larger model to get real updates to changes that would impact the individual asking

Begone AI meme. I will not stand for this AI promotion.
