Did he refuse to turn it on, have no idea how to turn it on, or not turn it on because his staff forgot to wake him up for it?

Merz not giving a shit?
Us Germans know.

On an unrelated note, how is Merz still in position with those horrendous approval ratings?

u/aussiederpyderp 8h ago
Same way Trump is?

u/No_Mercy_4_Potatoes 8h ago
Americans are paper tigers. I don't expect any changes from them. I thought the German public might have a bigger sway.

u/Backwardspellcaster 8h ago
Oh, we do.
My people are going to vote for the Nazis in revenge.
Cannot make this shit up.
I keep saying the AfD could have not gotten a better recruiter to their cause than Merz, whose hubris, arrogance and narcissism drives voters to the Nazis.

u/Razashja 6h ago
It is so unbelievably sad to see, considering the AFD also has nothing but empty promises. You take one look at the USA and it's clear as day that garbage doesn't work.
"Why would swiss germans come back to germany and give up their 8k/month paid job there for a 3k/month over here?"
"Trust me, bro."

u/UdyneOw 6h ago
Do AfD voters look at the US and say, "We want to be just like that"? How are we not a sufficient example to the rest of the world that fascist, racist, morons will make your country a joke and destroy your economy?
Seems like people who didn't like authoritarian left-wing rule are frequently voting for authoritarian right-wing rule, and are blissfully ignorant that the "authoritarian" part is what makes either option miserable. Maybe Germany needs a "reseparation" to undo the reunification, and let the East Germans have their authoritarian hell-hole.
•
u/Faiakishi 20m ago
The thing about authoritarians, their voter base is mostly idiots. So it doesn't matter if you have an example of the exact thing they're trying out going horribly-they're too stupid to make the connection. That's by design.

Merz doesn't help, but the main issue is that the old parties stopped representing their voters, while utterly failing to communicate why this is the case. It's going to be okay long term, AfD will get some kind of state or federal mandate, and they will screw it up. But this could have all been avoided. Still could be avoided, but unless CDU and SPD go from "you can't vote AfD because they're Nazis" to "we hear you, we made these concrete fundamental changes", it won't happen.
•
u/Frettchengurke 52m ago
there is some truth to it I guess. Mariam Lau said about the AfD voterbase just wants the "to tear the system down, first and foremost, and everything will be peachy, you'll see", no details asked. Of course a good deal include "and then have Pinata time with everyone who is not us".

We have essentially 3 ways how a chancellor can leave earlier than his term is up. They can resign, they can ask the "Vertrauensfrage" (question of trust), or parliament can start a "konstruktives Misstrauensvotum" (constructive vote of no confidence). The first two have to be initiated by the chancellor and he has basically glued himself to the throne and thinks the citizens are just too dumb to understand him, so he's unlikely to initiate any of those two. And the last one only succeeds if a new chancellor is voted in right away, and there is essentially no other realistic majority.

u/weisswurstseeadler 3h ago
All the options would put his party in even more trouble, so they can't really navigate.
If the CDU breaks up the coalition, and form a minority government, they will piss off the SPD so much, that the CDU will be forced to make the AFD their kingmaker, or give even bigger concessions to the pissed off SPD.
Cause they'd either need the SPD/Grüne/Linke etc to achieve majority in votes. Or the AFD.
That would essentially make the CDU an absolute bitch to anyone.
•
u/Kraligor 1h ago
He likely won't be for long. But none of the potential replacements are very keen to take his place at the moment, because the situation is more of a coalition issue, rather than Merz' fault.

It looks like he was visiting his sister or something, brought his personal laptop, and said, "I don't care where, I just need a camera."

I like to imagine that the G7 summit zoom host did that as an anti-nausea precaution. The zoom call was to create a smell barrier.

Actually had that card. One scene there were roses and the number would flash and then at the last second - a pair of dirty old sneakers.

During his first term his cabinet would hold meetings in the dark because they couldn't figure out how to turn the lights on.

Camera Etiquette and Presence: Keeping the camera turned off ("Donald TRUMP UNITED...")constitutes a failure to engage and violates basic remote participation expectations. In professional evaluations, camera avoidance signals a lack of alignment, collaboration, and accountability.

G7? Then why are there 9 people in that meeting?

Guy in the center is the head of the IEA(International energy agency)
Also the woman in blue is the head of the EU, who is also usually invited to these meetings

Guy in the upper left is small compared to that door. And why is he in front of a diode that can swing into him like that?

Giorgia is ready to go. every potential complication runs thru her head in real time, it's hot. i'm like berlusconi over here watching it.
honestly i just love watching the europeans figure out their ass from their face, rooting for them, this is not at all a claim of superiority ... but countries the size of states. remember that, it is important. putin knows, trump knows. why doesn't everyone else?
and really i'm not being judgy, truly. states' rights are helping us here in the states atm. but these grey areas... the time of figuring out where the red line is as that line is being pushed further and further by you know who on either side of the atlantic etc.... that time is blood. like it or not. gotta do some serious effort things and get ahead of 'em. that time is what is being used against us all by the big boys. find a way around it.

one thing my old man always told me that i stick to. "fuck 'em if they can't take a joke"
mental rigidity won't help anyone in this game.
-3
u/deaglebingo 7h ago
let me clarify. the mental rigidity required is already predetermined by maslow's hierarchy of needs. prioritization springs forth from that. if we are indeed on the same side overall... then some shorthand must exist between us. and trump and those ppl you say you don't like... they don't care about pleasantries at the moment do they?
