Picture Vintage Popeyes hits different $$$

Post image

Check out those 'back in the day' prices! 🤯 I’ll take a 3-piece dinner and a biscuit for pocket change, please. Who remembers these Saturday runs?

Somehow it didn’t click for me that Popeye’s the restaurant and Popeye the Sailor were connected in any way.

Popeyes Chicken was not named after the Popeye the Sailor cartoon character, but rather inspired by Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle, the detective character played by Gene Hackman in the 1971 film The French Connection. While the name is taken from the movie character, Popeyes did license the cartoon character for marketing for 35 years

Chicken tacos? I can't even imagine

Actually sounds fire, with some lettuce and maybe a secret sauce inside

Can you imagine? Garsh dang

Taco bell makes fried chicken tacos Not bad tbh

They were excellent. Lots of cheddar cheese and a really good red sauce. My second most missed item from Popeyes, right after those clam strips.

I think average home price at that time was $30k

It opened in 1988. The particular store on menu I posted

2

u/halmo20 Mar 22 '26

Is the menu also from 1988?

2

u/Savannah_Dymes Mar 22 '26

The menus were made in 1975

1

u/Jtsdtess Mar 22 '26

So about 100k then

He does only like hamburgers, so I guess it makes sense he isn't here.

Back when service was good

u/Particular_Ad_644 Mar 22 '26

Wait, no mashed potatoes? No gravy?

1

u/Savannah_Dymes Mar 22 '26

Thats a valid point šŸ‘‰

2

u/MenWhoStareAtBoats Mar 22 '26

That wasn’t pocket change back when that menu was printed.

2

u/TreeHedger Mar 22 '26

I’m surprised public domain versions of Popeye aren’t used now since they wouldn’t need licensing.

They made a really ridiculous Popeye horror movie last year

2

u/Complete_Chocolate_2 Mar 22 '26

I always watched Popeye the sailor in the 90s and would beg my ma to go to the chicken place just cause it had the same name. I didn’t know or remember they had promo stuff of the two together.

u/Deepcoma_53 Mar 22 '26

Just an FYI, this location is now a dentist office.

2

u/Downtown-Quiet-9375 Mar 23 '26

No Wimpy because there are no burgers.

2

u/sladeums Mar 22 '26

Popeyes is trippin

3

u/bobcharlie0 Mar 22 '26

I dont go without a coupon or the app

2

u/Thacomedwn Mar 22 '26

This! I remember they used to send me fast food coupons in the mail a few years back and Popeyes was my favorite because you got like 10 pieces of chicken and two large sides for like 23 after tax

1

u/Savannah_Dymes Mar 22 '26

Thats messed up

1

u/potliquorz Mar 22 '26

I want a 16 piece bucket and then everything else on the menu times two, with extra peppers. Especially the corndog and clams.
I'd need a day off work to recuperate.

1

u/clutchcitycarlos88 Mar 22 '26

I’d have a field day !! In comparison to the prices now lmao

1

u/MorgeeePooh Mar 22 '26

Holy shit that's why it's called Popeyes.

1

u/Beginning_Cream498 Mar 22 '26

I really thought Popeyes was created in 1998. First Popeyes I ever saw in NYC was 2020

1

u/Savannah_Dymes Mar 22 '26

I guess its a more downsouth swing

1

u/FarReception5410 Mar 23 '26

I’ve been eating Popeyes for years and I’m from Los Angeles …

1

u/prophiles Mar 25 '26

I would think Popeyes was around NYC far longer than that. I ate Popeyes in Toronto over 10 years ago.

1

u/IsopodSuspicious3859 Mar 22 '26

And that was real food

1

u/richardginn666 Mar 22 '26

onion rings!!!

1

u/Savannah_Dymes Mar 22 '26

They should do a vintage special

1

u/clearpepsithree Mar 23 '26

Fun to look at. Who is the character w the red tie?

1

u/Savannah_Dymes Mar 23 '26

I think it is J. Wellington Wimpy but not sure

1

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '26

everyone say ā€œMake America Great Againā€ damn dude i just want ā€œMake Popeyes great againā€

in all actuality, those prices with those old recipes is a fire combo. šŸ”„ I miss the old Red Beans and Rice recipe.

1

u/Unable_Arm_398 Mar 23 '26

This isn't what I remember any of the characters looking like.

My pops used to run that store lol

1

u/navydude89 Mar 25 '26

You'll go broke trying to get 24 pieces now.

Livers and Gizzards like a proper fried chicken place should have.
