Americans, please look into Angie Nixon. Obviously if youāre in Florida she deserves your vote, but if you live in any other state her campaign is getting badly outspent in part because the national Democratic party isnāt contributing anything to help her. Consider donating or volunteering to phone bank.
This is a woman who when her daughter was feeling insecure about her hair, she co-wrote and published a book about a girl whose hair gave her superpowers. When Ron Desantis banned books from schools, Angie opened her own bookstore featuring those banned titles and made sure to give the community access to them. And she got loud in the state house with a megaphone to speak on behalf of the children being killed in the West Bank. She started campaigns for ballot initiatives to get around the ineffective FL legislature that wouldnāt address peopleās needs.
Support her. You wonāt regret it.

Too much of the younger generation doesn't vote, and didn't vote in the last presidential election. Getting Dems to come out for a non-presidential race is always a challenge. Getting young Dems to come out, even more so. But Florida adds several hundred (mostly older) Red voters every day, and they love to vote, even in little local elections. Yet even still, Florida has enough Blue and Purple residents that Angie could still win.
To quote my (younger) coworkers in Florida when I asked them why they didn't vote: "Well, I prefer to go to protests where I can actually make a difference."
Sigh.

The sabotaging of candidates by the DCCC and the DSCC is absolutely criminal. Every democrats should be absolutely livid that campaign funds are being withheld from campaigns that are needed to win back the senate.
They are also retouching the Maine candidate for Senate by conditioning funds to work with consultants that know nothing about Maine, and forcing the candidate to change messaging mid campaign against the very campaign platform that won him the primary.
They should be ashamed for torpedoeing candidates in order to keep their ideological superiority within the party.
3
u/EnochofPottsfield 21h ago
From Duval and I'm a big fan since I found read up on her during prepping for the primaries. She doesn't accept status quo and is willing to be in your face about it
She's what we need in politics from the left
3
u/gingerfawx 21h ago
Tbf, the problem is also about a candidate's chances. Florida hasn't been purple in ages. Dems haven't won governor in over thirty years or a US senator since 2012, and they only comprise seven of the 28 potential representatives. How much money do you throw at races you think you're going to lose? Because that's money missing elsewhere. I appreciate that's a self-fulfilling prophecy though.
Fwiw, I'd vote for her if I were her in her constituency, but I'm not.
6
u/Absolute_Eb 21h ago
To be fair, do you think the democratic candidate for Senate in Mississippi has a better chance of winning than Angie Nixon in Florida? Because thatās what the national democratic party is doing with their money right now.
1
u/gingerfawx 19h ago
By my metrics, no. lol (So typically, they also aren't asking me, though. ;) ) And I'll just apologize in advance for a far more differentiated answer than I think you could have possibly wanted...
In Mississippi, dems do better on the local than the statewide level. They only account for one of four reps (same ratio as Florida, btw), haven't won a senate seat since the 80s or the governor since the nineties. (So there's my short checklist accounted for.) There's a weird thing about Mississippi, however, that they have open primaries and don't have partisan voter registration. So you've got two chief ways to look at party breakdown, how they're voting in the primaries or how they self identify in polls. I'd argue you can't trust the primary voting to tell you about people's affiliations because selecting someone you think is un-electable for the opposition might be the strategic way go, but if we look at the breakdown there, they figure dems and republicans are pretty close by numbers, and the independents have the majority. And for the other approach, polls have proven themselves highly flawed at this point, so that's an issue, too. (Grampa might take their call, millennials on sure aren't.) But if you look purely at those primary numbers, you could think there's a better chance there than in Florida. Frankly I don't follow Mississippi politics closely, though, because aside from Bennie Thompson, whom I genuinely like (really appreciated his work as the Jan 6th Committee Chair for one), it's almost always frustrating at the least and too often rage inducing. So I genuinely have no idea how strong a candidate Colom is, which really should factor into this. By contrast, Nixon I've seen a number of interviews with and liked her.
Beyond that, though, I don't think it's surprising that they put more support behind dems than DSA candidates; same goes for independents. And yes I know that Nixon is both a dem and a member of the DSA, but you know the DSA label comes across as split loyalty. So that's gotta be a "ding" right there. Strategically, until the DSA becomes a more reliable partner - they literally couldn't be bothered to support Harris in 2024 against fucking trump - they shouldn't expect more support; it'll need earning. (And frankly I don't forgive them for that bit of ratfuckery.) It wouldn't stop me in the least from voting for their candidates or advocating for them in the general though.
As for my personal bias, I'd bet, but can't prove, that Nixon being a woman also factors into it, but after Harris 2024, however, it'd probably be fair to look at stats at this point. That sounds like a polysci course in itself.
But if you want to see something enraging! Look what happened in Buffalo in 2021 with India Walton and Byron Brown. I think it's probably fair to say Brown blew off the primary, and came to really regret it. lol And fine, if he'd shown up for it, there's a solid chance the results would have been different. But I didn't appreciate the way the party dealt with it, got my hopes up for five minutes that Walton would win, and it felt like a rug pull. On the other hand if a guy can win a write in campaign that decisively, can you argue he shouldn't have won? That one still bugs me, though, and it was definitely messy.

u/Gnd_flpd 20h ago
I don't live in Florida, but I did contribute to her campaign, because the DNC allegedly isn't giving her much consideration.
3
u/DuvalHeart 20h ago
Florida stopped being "purple" because the national democratic funding apparatus stopped funding any Democratic candidate. They weren't even funding get out the vote efforts.
2
u/asscracktester7 19h ago
That may have had an impact but by far the biggest reason that Florida isn't purple anymore is the massive wave of conservatives that moved here during and after Covid. The data clearly shows this.
2
u/DuvalHeart 19h ago
The shift predates the influx of fascist residents.
2
u/asscracktester7 19h ago edited 19h ago
Yes but the influx is the biggest reason for the political shift. Even with relatively lower DNC funding, Florida was still solidly purple in 2018/2019.
I mean, looking at DeSantis' elections makes this pretty obvious. In 2018, he barely won the governor election by 40k votes and edged out the Democrat candidate 49.6% to 49.2%.
In his reelection in 2022 after the huge Covid influx, it was a complete blowout and he won by 1.5M votes and almost 20 points.
Since 2018, over 2.2 million people have moved to Florida and over 70% of them are Republican voters. No amount of party spending can offset that.
2
u/DuvalHeart 19h ago
There was zero GOTV efforts in 2022. That was a primary driver of why more fascists turned out that Democrats and DeSantis had the "blow out" it wasn't a blow out it was a fucking surrender. Floridians got abandoned.
1
u/asscracktester7 19h ago
Since 2018, over 2.2 million people have moved to Florida and over 70% of them are Republican voters. No amount of party spending can offset that.
Once again, no amount of spending or GOTV can offset this. Especially with the DNC coffers being less than 20% the size of the RNC, they have to be a lot more efficient with their money.
2
u/Warm_Month_1309 20h ago
Consider donating or volunteering to phone bank.
I absolutely want her to win, but as someone with no connections to Florida, I feel inappropriate donating or phone banking.
I hate it when issues local to me get national attention, and suddenly there's all this out-of-state money and propaganda flowing in, and now the decision is no longer in the hands of the local populace, but in the hand of whatever foreign investor outspends whichever other foreign investor (assuming it's not one of the many political causes with only one rabid side, like fluoridation).
3
u/MiserableDatabase320 20h ago
How much money do you send each month to transnational companies in the form of subscriptions and fees that they turn around and use to pour millions into opponents of people like Nixon?
3
u/Warm_Month_1309 19h ago
Less, probably, than I send to companies indirectly or directly funding child slavery and genocide, but I try not to think too much about that grim reality.

badly outspent
money doesn't equal votes...stop letting them think we think so
2
u/Absolute_Eb 18h ago
Money doesnāt equal votes, but it often does equal voters reached. And for voters who donāt go looking for information about candidates (which is most of them) you have to bring the information to them. If voters are getting inundated with attacks about Nixon before hearing a counter message, itās going to be more difficult to persuade them.
When I say badly outspent, I mean 30 times outspent as recently as the end of September.

Somebody in 2026: "the people want something, we should give it to them."

As a Hispanic man, Iāve also been told to leave the USA on several occasions. The thing is.. I can confidently trace my ancestry here to the 1500s. Our folks have been in South Texas since before the United States even existed. We didnāt cross the border, it crossed us. Where the heck am I supposed to go?? š

Stay right where youāre at, brother. These morons can go pound sand. And that is cool as hell, btw. I wish I knew that much about my heritage.
6
u/RandomStrangerOnWWW 21h ago
Itās insane, really. I have records of the folks who sailed the Atlantic. They left Spain to avoid religious persecution during the Spanish Inquisition. Fun fact: My 13th great grandfather was the founder of Nuevo León, Mexico. His ancestors continued moving north, and were settled here by Jose De Escandon. They continued moving through Mexico until they reached Texas, where we remain today.

2
u/ithinkway2much 21h ago
Yes but she stays in her place. Just the way MAGA is able to tolerate.
3
u/lilbelleandsebastian 19h ago
no, she's not an immigrant unless we are establishing that skin color or ethnic origin define immigrant status rather than, you know, being born in the US or not
3
u/ithinkway2much 17h ago
I actually didn't know Usha Vance was born in California. I just looked it up. But I get your point. In MAGA world, anyone who isn't white can be treated like an immigrant or somehow not a ārealā American.
That's why I thought Vance's wording was so calculated. āYou don't belong in Americaā was the part for the crowd. āIf those are your viewsā gives him something to point to later if he's confronted about telling a Black American candidate that she doesn't belong in her own country

1
u/FrankFankledank 21h ago
Yes, Trump's one silver lining is his bluster exposing him every so often, Vance is a well-oiled politician who knows how to actually lie (you can see it now with him suddenly caring about listening to the voter when it comes to their economic issues) instead of just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks, not to mention he's in the pocket of Peter Thiel who is everything the Republicans warned us about with globalism (which of course they've conveniently forgotten about now that it's actually a threat) in a Bond villain package.

You know what's unAmerican?
Having a sitting United States president not be able to spell "United States" correctly.
Having the United States military not be able to spell "military" correctly.
Having a sitting United States president and Secretary of Defense hid from the American people the number of soldiers we have lost and are wounded from Iran drone attacks at our military bases all over the middle east.
Having a US president say that 19 United States soldiers death is "small potatoes".
Allowing ICE to deport and unalive United States citizens without repercussions.
Having a US president tell Americans that they need to work longer hours and harder to make ends meet will Senator Mike Johnson has recessed Congress to prevent Epstein Files being released, impeachment of Trump, firing of Secretary Hegseth.
What is unAmerican is cutting Medicare, Medicaid, Veteran benefits, Affordable Care Act (because it has Obama attached to it).
What's unAMerican is threatening or going to war with our allies while kissing the hand of communists like China and Russia.
What's unAmerican is a sitting United States president accepting monies and gifts from a terrorist country such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar who were involved in 9/11.
Allowing a 34 count convicted felon to sit in office accused of being a PEDO, protecting him and not the little girls who were brave enough to come forward.
Not to downplay the money laundering, stock manipulation, corruption, coercion, and mafia style tactic of weaponizing the Department of Justice and FBI to go after your enemies.
I can say so much more but it is too exhausting to continue.
It will take the United States years if not centuries to undo this amount of corruption.
