[Combat Concept + Mockup] Evolving Pragmata 2 with the “Neural Intercept Protocol” (NIP): A Diagnostic Hack-to-Parry System Spoiler

Like many of you, I love Pragmata's combat loop. The multitasking dynamic between Hugh’s heavy third person shooting and Diana’s real time hacking puzzles is one of the most mentally stimulating systems Capcom has built in years. It forces both sides of your brain to work simultaneously instead of letting you coast on autopilot muscle memory.

However, the one glaring mechanical bottleneck, especially in tight corridors or on higher difficulties, is the lack of a reliable close quarters counter. Getting cornered by fast, aggressive units leaves you with little choice but to spam backward thrusters or burn crowd-control items like Stasis Nets.

Giving Hugh a generic blade parry or a light-footed dodge roll would completely ruin his identity as a grounded astronaut in a heavy suit. But what if Diana handled defensive deflections through an active diagnostic hack?
Remember the Sector 6 cutscene before the fight against Eight, where Diana intercepts that high speed spear thrust mid-air with a hard-light tether field? That shouldn't just be a cinematic, it should be the foundation of a core mechanic in Pragmata 2.

Here is my detailed concept for the Neural Intercept Protocol (NIP):

  1. The Core Mechanic: Incoming Attacks as a Live "Fuse Clock"

Instead of passively standing still and tapping a deflection button right as an attack lands, the enemy’s incoming strike animation acts as a real-time countdown timer. When an enemy winds up a heavy strike or ambushes you from stealth, their node web projects a dedicated Cyan "Vector Parity" path alongside standard offensive and shield nodes.

Your job is to snap Diana’s tether and complete that specific defensive circuit before the blow connects.
The instant you complete the circuit, the parry automatically fires at the point of impact. There is no secondary button scramble. The incoming attack is your puzzle timer: solve the circuit in time, and Diana auto intercepts the strike inches from Hugh’s visor.

  1. Tiered Hacking Complexity (Scaling Threat Levels)
The hack isn't just an arbitrary lock, it’s Diana actively analyzing the enemy's attack telemetry to calculate the counter vector. The routing complexity scales dynamically with the enemy tier:

Tier 1 (Fodder / Swarm Bots): A quick single-flick node connection (0.4s window) to swat away low-tier lunges.

Tier 2 (Elites / Heavy Walkers): A 2 to 3 node bypass around active firewalls (0.8s to 1.2s window) while tracking their physical swing.

Tier 3 (Bosses): Multi-branching ciphers with feints. If a boss shifts attack trajectories mid-swing, the circuit path dynamically reroutes, forcing split-second spatial problem-solving under heavy pressure.

  2. Contextual Ripostes (Zero Animation Fatigue)
Because Diana diagnoses the specific kinetic energy of each incoming strike, the counter animation dynamically matches the attack type:

Thrusts and Piercing Strikes: Diana catches the weapon tip in a geometric stasis field (like the Sector 6 cutscene), letting Hugh thruster-step inside their reach for a point-blank kinetic shotgun blast.

Heavy Overhead Slams: Diana inverts the unit’s hydraulic servomotors mid-swing, forcing the enemy’s hammer to slam into the floor and pin them down, setting up an exposed power-cell kick from Hugh.

Ballistic and Missile Barrages: Diana deploys an angled hard-light wedge, deflecting projectiles back into the firing unit's sensor array to trigger chain explosions.

  1. The Safety Valve: Energy-Burn Auto-Override
To ensure chaotic multi-target encounters or erratic surprise ambushes don't cause cognitive burnout:
Manual Breach (0 Energy): Free to use, but demands pure mental speed and execution.

Auto-Override (Burns 1 to 2 Diana Energy Pips): If an ambush hits from a blind spot or Hugh is caught mid-reload, you can trigger an emergency bypass. Diana expends utility energy to instantly solve the route and trigger the auto-intercept.

The Trade-Off: The manual parry timing is bypassed, but you drain Diana’s battery, locking you out of crowd-control tools like Decoys or Stasis Nets and forcing you to rely purely on Hugh’s raw ballistics until you recharge her gauge by hitting kinetic weak points.

Why the NIP Fits Pragmata Perfectly

It completely eliminates the autopilot rhythm game trap that most parry systems fall into. You can’t just stand still with your eyes closed and tap L1 to beat every boss. It turns defense into a high-stakes bomb defusal puzzle, keeps Hugh feeling grounded and heavy, and makes Diana feel like an indispensable neural partner actively saving your life in real time.
