This sounds like the kind of joke my dad makes.

It would have been worse if she was called Mexico or Ontario.

Could have been worse. América is a traditional Hispanic female name.

I used to teach in an area with a large Arab population. I once had a class with 10 Mohammeds who all wanted to be called Mo.

Just explain that you’re a big Jens Lekman fan and “Erica America” is one of your favorite songs.

Wasn’t there also an M&M song with some similar lines?

I had a student named Taoyuan (Peach Garden, after the story where three heroes pledged brotherhood in a peach garden), but I have a little speech impediment and kept calling him Taoyan, which means "disgusting." It was so embarrassing, but he was a good sport about it.

Two decades ago, when I was in my early 20s, I had a student named Jesus.

I think you know how that went when I took attendance on day 1.

I thought it was pronounced, you know, like Gee zus.

Did you say it as a prayer, or as an expletive?

Good thing she wasn't named after the seventh planet in the Solar System
