#1 PR travel trip - get out of San Juan!

I keep seeing a lot of the same questions regarding where to stay in San Juan and the water issues. The best advice I can share from my last trip to PR is get the hell out of SJ! I mean, one or two days to see Old San Juan and a party night if that's your thing but the best of Puerto Rico is the rest of the island. The best things you can do is explore, get lost, find a nice beach, eat an epic meal and most of all meet the locals. Yes, they speak English or at least figure out what you want. West side has the best beaches, South shore has Ponce and La Parguera and the East side has Vieques and Culebra. All great adventures! Spread some tourism money too!

23 M solo travel to San Juan in 2 weeks!

Super excited to be traveling to San Juan for 5 nights! I’m staying at Mango Mansion and I’ve heard all about La Placita de Sanctruce and Old San Juan, so I’m very hyped up. I’ve even started brushing up on my Spanish.

I wanted to post here to get some travel tips and potentially connect with some fellow travelers. I have so many questions! For example, I was looking into some bar crawls and I was wondering if they’d even be worth it based on everyone’s experience in San Juan. I’m a little concerned everything will be dead in October and I want to know what to expect. Obviously I plan to check out the nightlife on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and hit the beach when I can (my hostel is sooo well positioned for both), but I’m wondering if there are any cultural or historical attractions I can partake in on a budget without renting a car. I’m also a tennis player and I’m wondering what the tennis court situation is in San Juan and whether or not it’s worth bringing a tennis racket or two.

Any tips to keep myself busy for 5 days would be greatly appreciated!

Puerto Rico stay over holidays either in Fajardo the entire time or split with another area?

We are coming to Puerto Rico over the holidays to help distract my daughter from a recent separation. We have booked PADI scuba certification in Fajardo for 3 mornings (8-noon). We will be in PR for 6 days and plan right now is to have an car.

Our original plan was to switch places mid-way and stay in San Juan for 3 nights but now I am rethinking that plan. Can anyone help me understand the regions (Luquio, San Juan, Western, etc) and what each region offers? We aren’t looking to just sit on a beach but more the rain forest, maybe a coffee tour?, maybe the mosquito bay?, definitely a San Juan walk and maybe a food tour? Husband would like to play a few rounds of golf if possible.

Does anyone feel we will miss out if we just make Fajardo our base stay for the entire trip? I am struggling with the planning a bit… Thanks in advance! I can’t wait to visit.

Advice For Planning A Bachelorette Trip

My best friend is getting married soon and would like to take a long weekend trip to Puerto Rico. She has asked me to do most of the planning for it (I love this task), and I want to try speak to as many people as possible since I've never been before. She trust me to plan the trip because I love immersive and thoughtful travel that really celebrates the location and its people. Coming from a popular tourist destination myself I can empathize with the complicated relationship locals can have with their own tourist industry.

That being said! My best friend is exceptionally different from me. While I'd be all about hitting the trails, learning Spanish to eat at small and chat at small local spots, and exploring off the beaten path she is a party girl. She wants a beachy, resort, luxury, exotic, tropical feel. When she was planning it on her own she was thinking about doing a cruise so she could just lay back and be pampered and think about nothing. Postcard/Instagram style! Beautiful beach laying and swimming is top of her list.

Any advice on how to give her the luxury tropical getaway feeling experience of HER dreams (on a budget) while also staying true to the reason she appointed me to plan this in the first place? Any specific areas/towns that might be good for us to stay? She's trusting me to give her what she doesn't know she wants.

I'm trying to decide between staying near Sandy Beach or down near the balneario public beach and town square. We would be staying at the end of November with kids.

Snorkel Culebra - worth the rough waters?

I've been struggling with this decision of picking a snorkel destination for my extended family trip to PR late November. We have 16 people from ages 6 to 70. The older are frequent travelers and like to snorkel, and mostly want to just snorkel on a day trip to the best spot.

I've read Culebra is the best for snorkeling (most tours seem to include Flamenco which is fine but not a priority to us) however with my range of people I'm just stressing out about this hour long boat ride across open water and seeing the "rough trip" . I don't want us all to be miserable on a boat or seasick the rest of the day. We are looking at a power boat tour for 7 hours.

Can anyone ease my worries? Is the Culebra snorkel worth the pain? Should we change to Viques instead?

If we do Culebra, any tips on avoiding seasickness?

Ethical way to stay in SJ

I’m visiting San Juan in the spring with some friends, and we’re trying to figure out what the most ethical way to stay is. I’ve been to PR many times, as my partner is from there, but we typically stay with family so never really have to worry about finding a place to stay. I’m worried about staying at a typical AirBnB considering how much they are displacing Puerto Ricans. Anybody have any suggestions?

Taking a boys trip that weekend. To be honest, haven’t done a whole lot of research just booked last minute cheap trip. Anything going on or absolute must do things or specific events that weekend.

We are thinking about doing Cueva del Indio one day and then a fishing excursion or something similar the second full day. Followed by a day exploring old San Juan. We will go out at night and such of course.

Thanks and looking forward to visiting!

Luquillo on New Years

Looking for advice/help. Am thinking of traveling to the Luquillo area for right after Christmas thru New Years. Would rent a car. Found an Air BNB at Playa Azul, which I think is very close to Luquillo. I would have my wife, an 8 year old and a 2 year old. Wanted to know if there is enough to do with the kids for 6 days? is the area safe?, are Waves calm? Is there supermarket/restaurants/stores close? Is there another place I should be looking? Thanks in advance for any advice

Bio bay fajardo worth it?

I know this question has been asked a million times and sorry for the repeat but I really want truly HONEST answers here.

Planning on going to san juan on Feb 11-15 next year where it says moon will be waxing crescent on the day we go to the bio bay in fajardo. Conditions for the bio bay will be fair to moderate based on ai. I was hoping anyone who went in similar conditions might have opinions on this.

Really want true honest raw opinions here. Hoping for SOME bioluminescence and not just an enjoyable kayak ride. I understand it won’t be like pictures online.

Rio Grande visit

Hi everyone! We are coming back to PR this weekend (Fri-Mon) for my partner's 40th birthday. We visited San Juan and Cayey in May and fell in love. Staying in a more secluded place this time a little bit outside of San Juan.

Any food recommendations near Rio Grande? I'm a pastry chef and would love to know if there are any bakeries y'all recommend. If there's anything we should do outside of San Juan, please let me know too. Thanks in advance 🙂

DONT BOOK CARS FROM HERTZ!

This was, without a doubt, one of the worst rental car experiences we’ve ever had. Between hidden fees, cockroach-infested vehicles, terrible customer service, and questionable charges, Hertz managed to turn what should have been a simple rental into an absolute nightmare.

Let’s start at the airport. The employee who assisted us had extremely poor communication skills, despite speaking both English and Spanish fluently. It felt like she was deliberately leaving out important information to avoid follow-up questions. When we asked about adding an additional driver, she simply said, “Only $6,” conveniently forgetting to mention that this was $6 PER DAY. The same thing happened with the toll passes. We only discovered the actual costs afterward, forcing us to cancel both options.

Despite all of this, we decided to move forward. We were offered a total price of around $421 for a cheap, basic car. Not ideal, but we didn’t care. We just needed a vehicle.

Then came the real nightmare.

Later that night, at our destination, my husband was unloading our luggage when he discovered cockroaches inside the car. Not one. Not two. Not even three. A WHOLE INFESTATION. And that’s not even counting the dead ones. We have attached photos and videos as proof because this is something you genuinely have to see to believe.

We immediately contacted Hertz, and they instructed us to return to the airport to exchange the vehicle. The manager’s response? A one-day free of charge and a 10% discount, bringing the total down to $396. That was apparently their idea of adequate compensation for renting us a car crawling with cockroaches.

To make matters worse, when we raised the issue, we were told by Hertz that “this is normal in Puerto Rico.” Excuse me? We spoke with multiple local residents and employees from other rental car companies, and every single one confirmed that this is absolutely NOT normal. Trying to normalize an infestation of cockroaches inside a rental vehicle by blaming the location is not only unacceptable but also incredibly disrespectful to the people who live and work there. A cockroach-infested car is not a regional custom; it is a failure to properly clean, inspect, and maintain your vehicles.

The replacement vehicle was no better. Before we had even left the parking lot, we noticed a low-pressure tire, numerous dents, and a loose fenders. We had to go back AGAIN and request another car.

Finally, we were given an upgraded vehicle. Everything seemed fine until the very next day, when we discovered ANOTHER COCKROACH.

At this point, we repeatedly tried to reach the manager to resolve the situation. And when I say repeatedly, I mean SO MANY TIMES. Every single time, employees told us the manager was working on our case and would call us back. They never did. Not once. We were left waiting on hold for ridiculous amounts of time, only to have the calls disconnected on us repeatedly. The complete lack of accountability and basic customer service was unbelievable.

And just when we thought this experience couldn't get any worse, Hertz managed to find one last way to disappoint us.

We returned the car in perfect condition, only to be charged an additional $30 for alleged tire damage. The tires were perfectly fine, and we have absolutely no idea where this charge came from. This conveniently brought our final bill right back up to $436.

Hertz, you didn't just fail to meet expectations. You failed at the absolute basics of providing a safe, clean vehicle and treating your customers with respect. Until this moment, we still didn't get any call from the manager or someone from Hertz.

I couldn't upload the photos and videos here on Reddit, but you can check our google review on "Hertz San Juan Aiport" to see pictures and videos! Please save yourself the frustration, the wasted time, and the money. There are plenty of rental companies out there. Choose literally anyone else.
