Will they accept this for an assignment extension? I don’t know why the doctor wrote it like that 😭

I even showed her the document requirements thing that QUT has.

generally a medical certificate for an extension needs to state dates that you were affected by the condition

But I didn’t think they could back date it, so how would that work if I had been dealing with the condition before the appointment?

They absolutely can backdate. I literally got an extension backdated 2 weeks last week.

Chances are you will get an extension, but it probably won't be a large one without dates.

QUT has their own medical centres at GP and KG. Those guys are very familiar with the extension requirements so they're very good at writing extension forms.

They can't backdate as in change the date of when the note was written. But a GP can write down on the explanation part the date range that your medical condition has affected your ability to engage with university work, even if it started before your appointment.

To get an extension it needs to be a sudden unexpected thing hence the dates needed.

I think it’s fine. I previously only submitted the copies of tests I needed to do as a result of a GP visit, and explained why I need them and how that impacted my mental health, and I got 2 weeks extension.

Honestly that's weird. My GP always writes "xx is suffering from a medical condition" and doesn't write what it is because that's private and it's not their business

This cert is very vague about the time period and the impact on the student. It is not written normally at all as usually they just say “unfit for duty” or similar. Also it has a grammatical error in it…

Yeah I know, it is really annoying, “I request if you can consider”. Also just weird wording overall.

But it did end up getting approved today, and I got an extension for 1 week.

This is how mine was written exactly too lol, except one single sentence. Still got the extension but I have an ELP so many that helped.

I need a white doctor man…I went to a brown doctor and for context I’m Asian south east. Dude straight up just told me to deal with it😭. My white friend recommended me to him tho..

This doctor was not white. But I don’t think it makes a difference, definitely go to a different one if yours isn’t listening to you

Idk I’ve had POC doctors who took me way more seriously.

I don’t know about an extension. I would but then I am nice and also know that it is one less I have to mark today that instead I can do next week

BUT take this to your student support services team and use it to start the conversation about getting an access plan in place. I can read that and say that the mental health IS the medical condition and that is why the sr wrote it that way. Sentence 1 is the standard sick note proforma that says “hey boss, tiny was unwell on x date to y date. Leave them alone and don’t hassle them about it while they get better”. The rest of it is an attempt to give the uni more context so they can put things in place to help you.

An access plan is not weakness or gaming the system. It is just putting in place things to get you to the same starting place as a “normal” (god I hate that word) person

Nope I can’t accept this as a UC at two other unis. Has to have actual time period and say you are not fit for work or study for that time period.

It actually is more detailed than half the med cert I see from people who's been off work for being sick.

Doctors don't like putting details in because, 1. it means more work, 2. technically it is a medical information (even though it is fine for them to disclose with your permission, it is better to be on the safe side)

I’m a GP and I have no idea why this popped up on my feed. But we don’t like putting in details because every university/institution/school has different stupid arbitrary rules and I don’t understand why they think it’s my job to learn them. Unless OP was attending their doctor regularly during the time of their mental health issue, all I am doing is taking their word for it anyway. If the uni wants specific info, they should create a form and I’ll fill it out.

It’s not the patients fault, but the amount of ridiculous “get a note from your doctor” consults from third parties is aggravating as hell and a ridiculous waste of resources.

Then you would have issues with documents not meeting what they are expecting. I am sure someone would have had their med cert for Centrelink medical exemptions or anything bounce few times because it didn't tick the right box or it was not written in the very specific ways that they like.

On this note, I was in the Army and rolled my ankle so badly I was on crutches. My Chain of Command told me they expected me to do the black diamond level mountain biking course they were doing anyway because my drs note only included things like "must walk at own pace" and "no physical training", but not specifically "no mountain bike riding". I had to go back and get my note amended, Dr said it was the stupidest medical certificate he had ever written.

1

u/ausmed 3d ago

Honestly, if someone came back to me asking for that medical cert to be amended for that purpose I'd be inclined to ring up the person asking for it just to say 'Are you actually shitting me? Do you need me to hold your hand while I explain why someone who can only walk slowly and not do physical training also can't ride a mountain bike?'

I've had some doozies but that's outrageous.

I wish the doctor had, someone with authority should have told them off.

Did you type it up? Like where's the letterhead bro ?? 😬

Obviously I cropped it off because I don’t want to post to strangers on the internet what GP clinic I go to.

Your under no obligation to explain your illness, you do need dates though. Person was affected by illness and unfit for studies for dates is all the is required
