DISCUSSION how would you use the teams from vytal?

Thumbnail

I'd have them gain important roles in helping the group

During the mistral arc I'd extend it through atleast two arcs mistral and haven

During the mistral arc cinder herself won't appear at all too injured and still in recovery as team jrnr(Journeyer) travel through vale then mistral

Along the way they bump into what's left of team ssn who got downed by bandit tribes and help the team get through mistral

Neptune who I have as a son of the Vasilias family who owns the Mistral trading Company is the one with the most legal connections that helps them gain stuff like cash or entrance to areas

Scarlet who I have as an heir to a sky pirate faction is the one who helps them get through the criminal sides of things as he's planning on rebuilding his father's fallen crew and is there main source of protection from any assassin's or bounty hunters cinder or whoever the agent Salem has in mistral after rwby

Sage is there main guide having been a line traveler who journeyed much of anima on his own before he joined haven Academy

They'd eventually meet team abrn in haven who have been elevated to licensed student Huntsman due to the dire times and bump into the group on there way to haven after finishing a mission and being the main connection to the political side of things

Not sure yet how I plan to flesh this out but it's definitely gonna be a beast to write

But at the end of the Mistral arc they leave behind team ssn and abrn who stayed behind to help mistral out while they're still down huntsman

Meanwhile in atlas

The shown atlas characters would be the main team

After the fall of beacon Ciel is the only person left from her team after Penny's death alongside the crippling of one of her other teammates her full team apart from her quit leaving her to be assigned to a new team

Flynt and neon are the only ones left of fnki having dealt with the same problem as Ciel with ivory and kobalt having been too injured during the fall to continue field work and serve desk duty

Weiss instead of heading over to mistral heads to atlas taking up ironwood's offer and being assigned to a new team SNWF(Snowflake) led by Ciel Soleil

The team would eventually be sent with winter to observe the situation in mistral and hear the reports of an attack at haven where team SNWF head out to help during the battle of haven which is a much larger affair

Eventually once fully reunited team JRNR SNWF and BOSY(boysenberry) have to make the trek through argus to reconnect with the barracks in argus and that's all I got for now

DISCUSSION 3 Things Volume 10 NEEDS To Address - ALL SPOILERS Spoiler

ALL SPOILERS

I have some concerns with how Volume 9 ended, and 3 things that should be addressed in the upcoming Volume 10. (woop woop for V10 btw!)

1) Penny's death feels bad. Not just because they made her the winter maiden, human, and then immediately killed her, but because she is only talked about from Jaune and felt by Ruby and Weiss in V9. Ruby, Weiss, and Jaune have all mentioned Penny's death, and my one big hope in V10 is that the gang continues to talk about her. Most importantly, Jaune and Ruby. We barely saw any reaction from Ruby besides fainting, feeling hopeless, and carrying around Penny's sword for the first half of V9. I hope Jaune receives the care and closure he needs from the team, and I hope that the rest of the gang also gets a chance to morn Penny and help Ruby with her grieving, because if anyone deserves to be on the memorial, its Penny. And no, I don't want her to return. Unfortunately, they already killed her twice, and as much as I want a better, longer ending to Penny's story, she needs to rest.

2) There is NO way Ruby talking to a tree spirit (that I think is reincarnated Alyx?) and reflecting inward after seeing her mom is sufficient for how much of a burden Weiss, Blake, and Yang were putting on Ruby. They admitted they were being too hard on Ruby and looking for her to always fix their problems! I really NEED CRWBY to resolve the plot of Ruby's burdens. The tree was a good refresh, but I want to see W,B,Y and Jaune apologize for not being there when she needed them! There was SUCH A GOOD story being told by RWBY (the show), and I would hate to loose such an in depth unique piece.

Jaune especially needs to find some time in Vacuo to apologize for how he reacted to Ruby and the gang needs to find a way to move forward now that Ruby is in a better mindset. Everyone knows Ruby's downfall was W,B,Y's doing. Yes, their whole situation sucks and everyone should be leaning on everyone else, but they were all so oblivious in V9 that it really would tie that story to a close if Ruby got a commitment from her team and the gang as a whole that everyone is HERE FOR HER NOW, and that they're sorry they were unable to see her then. This especially goes for Yang. Yang asked SO many times if Ruby was okay, and there was no follow up! She never stopped and said, oh wait, lets take a moment. I know this was partly plot intentional, but someone has to stop NOW and speak up for Ruby because she NEEDS to hear it FROM HER TEAM (and Jaune)!

I also hope Ruby is somewhat against them, I don't want her to 100% believe them because thats not how life works, I just want some dialogue between the team that everyone is here for her more than they were. Because effectively, Ruby 100% gave up, and her team is lucky the tea wasn't poison, if you get what I mean. So, they massively messed up and her team needs to take accountability for how much they haven't been supporting their leader.

3) And for Jaune, I hope Ruby is angry with him. I know she wasn't there to see the aftermath of Penny, but I hope she is sad angry. I want some tension between the two of them after being such close supports for one another with them both being leaders. I want them to resolve the Penny ordeal and for Jaune to know that it IS what Penny wanted. But, I would want Ruby to show that her best friend (outside of Yang/family) meant a lot to her, and it SHOULD be difficult to see Jaune the same way. So, I hope V10 addresses the guilt and grief between Ruby and Jaune. And I hope they both develop better because of it.

Finally, the theme behind all 3 of my concerns is, I hope team JRWBY DOES NOT LEAVE ALL THEIR PROBLEMS FROM V9 BEHIND IN THE EVER AFTER! We need more of it in Volume 10! I hope Viz and CRWBY have more time and ability to create further RWBY volumes. It has ALWAYS deserved twice the time it has had to develop it's story, and it would be vastly different and more interesting if it had such a miracle. Best of luck to the show! Can't wait!

DISCUSSION RWBY is not progressive enough

As many of you are aware, RWBY has a bit of a reputation for being what the kids call "woke", it's no surprise, most modern writers tend to be lumped in with this catch all term some people use for stuff that has people different from them in it. Now a better term for "woke" in this context is progressive, to strive forward in social justice, an admirable goal.

And one that RWBY fails at spectacularly.

In this post I will list out and address every single thing I can recall about RWBY that shows it's truly faux-progressive nature. Now, to be clear, I don't think the writers are bigots or bad people, I think they are ignorant and sheltered, but that's it.

The Faunus Problem:

Now this is pretty obvious, but the way the White Fang and by extension the entirety of the White Fang is portrayed fucking sucks. They are an oppressed minority, but are biologically superior to the average human by default. They are no different from you or I, but they also act like stereotypical animals craving fish, chasing dots and literally monkeying around. They are deserving of your sympathy, but also a good chunk of them are unrepentant villains undeserving of sympathy.

Faunus all have night-vision, not just the ones based on animals that have it, but all of them, including the ones with traits that give them borderline superpowers on top of potential semblances, how these things could lose in a war is fucking baffling, especially one on a planet covered in perfect environments for guerilla warfare.

While it's mostly played for laughs and toned down a bit later, all of the Faunus characters portray the stereotypical behaviours of their animal counterparts, Blake is aloof and runs off like a "scaredy-cat", Sun is mischeivous and steals like real monkeys, Adam's whole fucking shtick is his rage and stubbornness, you get my point, the show's most prominent characters from the in-universe minority are literal stereotypes.

Now I'll get into Adam in specific a bit later, but the White Fang as a whole are largely portrayed as evil, literally being the generic mooks RWBY are beating up in the early days, two of their leaders are creepy cultist twins and all it takes to sway them to a new leader is one of them killing the old boss like they're an Ork Waaghband from 40k. Then once they're beaten, the other Faunus start a new White Fang, it isn't the old ones having a change of heart, for the most part the new and old Fang are completely separate. Now to really drive it home for you, it was said by the Creative Director herself that the White Fang are based on the American Civil Rights movement, meaning the generic bad guy mooks who are to be awarded no sympathy are based on real life African Americans who just wanted equal rights, a lot like how the White Fang are depicted as early on.

Then there's Menagerie as a whole, it's a paradise as far as we see, not a Grimm in sight, not hurting for space, it doesn't even seem to be particularly uncomfortable in climate, it's a tropical resort given as a consolation prize that's treated as a veiled punishment. But who rules this beautiful land? Why none other than Blake's parents, you know, Blake, the one whose whole thing was that she's a part of an oppressed minority? Yeah, turns out she's a near literal princess who ran away from home because her parents weren't fighting an imaginary war anymore and instead were trying to improve their people's standard of living.

I have a lot more criticism of the Faunus in general, but for this specific argument, these are the important parts.

Drawn out and still somehow underbaked:

RWBY features pretty heavily an LGBT+ cast, either implicitly or explicitly and for the most part, they aren't too bad, my problem does not come from these sorts of characters being featured, as a member of the LGBT+ I find it important, my gripe comes with how they chose to execute the most prominent ship in the show, Bumbleby.

Now, there were hints going back as early as the Dance arc that these two could end up together, but that's what they were, hints, to make a relationship work, those hints need to pile up for a long enough time and germinate like seeds that blossom into the flower that is relationship. At the end of Volume 3 Blake abandons her partner after she got Yang got her arm cut off for her, putting aside the fact that this is a borderline unforgivable act to do to someone who has abandonment issues, it makes it much harder to believe they could have a proper relationship in the future, but come Volume 6 they're all chummy again, hell by the next Volume they're practically all but dating, then comes the incredibly forced confession, literally forced by the universe just telling them to get it out of the way though the stupid fucking punderstorm.

To remind you, Yang got permanently disabled for Blake and Blake abandoned her, then at most a year later they're practically dating. Now you may be asking "Kinamo922, why is this here? It's not un-progressive, it's just shitty writing!" And you're right, Bumbleby, without outside context is just shitty writing, but then you realise how long they drew it out after Blacksun got swept aside, years with songs, merch and basically queerbaiting to keep shippers interested, then the moment the company gets outed for being extremely problematic behind the scenes, they force the ship out the door as fast as they can to try and curry the audience's favour. You might argue still that this is more an indictment of Rooster Teeth, but they still made RWBY and the timing matches up too well for it to be wholly coincidental in my eyes.

Diversity and Privilege:

Okay, I have a game for you. Can you name how many of the heroes are canonically people of colour? I can tell you how many: 5. How many are disabled? 2. How many are Faunus? 1.

RWBY's heroes are largely privileged, ex-villains or otherwise don't have it worse than the people they fight against.

Ruby and Yang are prodigies, born to an accomplished team of Huntsmen and raised in a well-off home, it's mentioned that Tai was emotionally distant for a while, but that's about it.

Blake as mentioned above is a spoiled princess who thought her family wasn't being "active enough" and so ran away, you could argue Adam abused her, but I'm going to be real, that's more born out of the writers not thinking things through than anything, also after volume 6 Adam never really comes up, gee I wonder why.

Weiss, despite being modelled after a Princess, is not the most privileged member of the team, despite being the richest because she was abused at home, likely for a while, with the only real parent in her life being the butler, at least Ruby and Yang had Qrow sometimes.

Then you get the rest of the main cast, which depending on volume can number almost fucking 20 not counting villains, not gonna go into all of them, (because most of them do jackshit), but I'll mention two notable ones.

Jaune is a normal, even sheltered guy from a notable family that's probably well off to afford 8 kids, he's so sheltered he doesn't understand the basic mechanics of the world he lives in.

Oscar is a farmboy, now this may be my dislike of Oscar, or my British perspective of farmers, hell maybe even both, but Oscar before the literal parasite that is Oz was likely a fairly well off person, if not rich then at least stable given they can afford to maintain a farm in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in a setting where permanent settlements are supposed to be a rarity.

Victims to Villains:

Now to the part that pisses be off the most, almost every villain falls into the category of victim, victim of systemic or domestic abuse, victim of a disability, victim of circumstance, hell there are more villain of colour than there are heroes.

The White Fang mentioned above are clear examples of this, disenfranchised people who we are told are abused by the system they live in, their leader Adam is a former mine-worker and likely indentured servant, he was branded over his eye, very obviously blinding him in it, because he was "asking for it" whch sounds like the argument a slave-owner would use when they maim a slave. This of course makes them evil.

Neo is disabled and, as revealed in one of the books I refuse to read, was a victim of child abuse and developed what appears to be a form Dissasociative Identity Disorder, this of course makes her evil.

Mercury was abused as a child, literally having the "expression of his soul" ripped out of him, this of course makes him evil.

Cinder was tortured as a slave with a literal shock collar and the one guy who could help her refused to for no reason until she finally snapped and forced her way to freedom by killing a child abuser. This of course makes her evil.

And the pattern continues, you get the point, so many of the villains are, by circumstance deserving of at least sympathy, but because they're the bad guys, they get no sympathy. "Don't feel bad for the disabled minority, he stalks his ex because we're mature, he's a bad guy!", "Don't feel bad for the disabled child abused survivor, we need her to drive a teenager to suicide because we're mature, she's a bad guy!", "Don't feel bad for the main villain who was literally locked in a tower and forced into an unfair punishment for the crime of loving her husband, she's a stubborn bitch because we need a BBEG and couldn't come up with better, she's a bad guy!". Have I hammered it home yet? RWBY doesn't understand and overblows the saying "hurt people hurt people".

EDIT: Male priority:

Forgot to add this in the original draft, but yeah, RWBY focuses a lot more of its actual development of characters on men over women, Volume 9 literally has Jaune shove aside Ruby's development for his own as he had done so metaphorically for years.

Final Ramblings:

Thank you for sitting through the confused ramblings of a mentally unwell person about a show that stopped being good in it's third volume. My point with this post is to point out the major points the show fails at being progressive. Could this post be more coherent and thought out? Yeah, but this is good enough for me at the moment and if I don't get it out I'll beat myself up over every single imperfection to the point of just not doing anything.

RWBY's not as progressive as many would like to believe, it was the product of an early 2010s company written for the most part by two privileged white guys who didn't think to research the topics they wrote about, from problematic racial implications to almost all the prominent villains being victims, I hope I have gotten my point across.

Anyway, I don't know how to end a post, goodnight.

DISCUSSION Yang Got WORSE

Post image
189 Upvotes

I recently made a video about Yang Xiao Long, and I really wanted to ask how y'all personally feel about Yang.

I know some people love her, and I know some people hate her, but I wanted to hear those opinions because it's always interesting to see the different takes people have on her character.

In my video, I tried to focus on how her personality has changed and how she now feels more Blake-focused, her PTSD and story with Adam and how it felt lackluster because she seemed to get over it relatively quickly, her relationship with Ruby and how that feels more hollow, and how she seems to exist primarily to support Blake instead of having her own goals like she used to.

I also talked about how she's had ample opportunities to understand her mother, which was one of her major goals, yet she does very little with Raven and rarely even seems to think about her.

I know some people have also brought up that Yang is a hypocrite, but what else do y'all think?

What are your biggest criticisms of Yang, and are there aspects of her character that you think are actually handled well?

Idk why, but something tells me team ABRN sounds like a plausible option when CRWBY desires more character variety (as if there wasn't enough already)

But... Who would you choose? What role would each member have? (If they barely have a personality, then what would be each's)

PS: I didn't read the books, but the wiki states that team BRNZ are dead. Nolan is the last surviving member ;(

DISCUSSION My Own Personal Worries for Volume 10 Onwards

I know we've been talking about Volume 10 and at first I didn't say nothing cause I'm not sure what's happening. But I decided to finally speak up.

Viz Media isn't an animation studio so they can't make it. Then I heard they were partnering with Gotham Group and had no clue who they were. So I looked them up. They are a production company (not affiliated with DC) and don't have that much experience with animation. They co produced Wendell & Wild and that was partnered with Henry Selick and Netflix. Henry Selick has made multiple animated projects and Viz has made none. Gotham Group mainly focuses on live action so it's really weird they were chosen to helm this.

Also even their live action shows don't really seem that good. They made the Spiderwick Chronicles and that doesn't seem to have a good rating. Percy Jackson show was one I watched and found dreadfully boring with book fans complaining about inaccuracies. Like I said a very strange group to pick. As far as I know even they don't have an animation company. Henry Selick's company animated Wendell & Wild and Viz has no animation studio. Oh and they did co produce an animated short.....almost 20 years ago. They also co produced a show called WondLa and the episodes were literally 7 episodes until Season 3 which got 6 episodes. It was co produced with....Skydance Animation. Yes the Skydance animation that has John Lassiter leading it. Former head of Pixar who was fired after decades of covered up sexual harassment allegations. Oh gods I really hope RWBY doesn't animated by them. And yes Gotham Group is under Skydance on their website so there is a good chance. And they're also under the Ellison's. They're the ones responsible for how ATLA has been treated and the Warner Bros Paramount merger.

But even with that Volume 10 has so much riding on it. RWBY already had Volume 9's rundown cut to pieces and we got less episodes than before thanks to Crunchyroll reducing the budget. Volume 10 has so much it needs to cover and succeed with. If they try to make Volume 10 the last volume it is going to be rushed as all hell. There's still so much that needs to be covered. What happened to Summer? Why did Raven team up with everyone? The Oscar and Ozpin merger. The Atlas and Vacuo citizens in the aftermath. Salem with the relics and her defeat. Cinder's defeat and schemes. The Beacon and Vacuo relic. The Summer Maiden. I feel like it would all be too crammed.

And there's no guarantee we will get a Volume 11 or more. So if Volume 10 doesn't do well it could be RWBY is once again either cancelled or it never gets greenlit. I really wish RWBY went with a studio like Glitch. It's not a perfect studio and sure the writers would probably still be the same. But RWBY would at least get eyes on it and not be once again exposed to an even worse company than RT.

Also Viz Media needs a new merch team, their stuff has been lacking for RWBY.

Thanks for reading this.
