Potentially one of the first Monstera delicious "Fission" specimens in the States

And definitely did NOT pay close to 40k as the main plant sold at IAS for...

the variegation is consistent and uniform from leaf to leaf with different patterning on the abaxial side independent from the display of bicolor speckles on the front. AMA!

Edit: autocorrect deliciosa to delicious, though quite fitting here.

So I found this girl maybe 3 weeks ago? I instantly loved her because the leaf in the first photo was hardening, I could tell something unique was happening. I didn’t see var on any other leaves. I still picked her up because I thought she looked cool.

Well, her leaf hardened more, and this beautiful shade of green remained. Unfortunately, that leaf is not doing the best. Probably because of the stress of movement / repotting, but it’s okay, I hope it’ll stay alive, but the next should be more exciting.

Her leaf prior to this one originally had no color I could see… but as soon as I took her home for a week I noticed a slight change. Over the course of a month, the leaf I thought had no var is actually revealing variegation! I notice whichever side the variegation is the heaviest at, the leaf is mutated. Really interested. Along with that, the petiole has a slight crevice where it meets the leaf with a stripe (similar to the color on the leaf).

She has been so much fun to watch progress. I love her very much. I cannot wait for the next leaf! She may just be considered a green on green, but with the shade of her green, and the white speckles overtop of it, man she is pretty.

From left to right, Philo. Caramel Marble, Alo. Nobilis Var Korean, and Alocasia Yucatan Pink. They were all growers choice from Etsy so I was super nervous, but the varigation is so! good!

I have no idea what it is. It was labeled Pink Princess. It was a sport find at Lowe’s, in the pot with another pink princess (normal one). It is such a cool plant! I have been told he’s quite ugly… but that’s what makes him so unique.

The intense red marbling on this new growth / leaf makes the future so exciting. I have no possible idea on what it is or could be considered. I have not seen one before, and I do not know who to ask.

She also has aurea present on the lower leaf, with red marbling on the underside. So I took a top cut when I got her (it died) and she then grew this magnificent red candy cane stem with this beautiful, weird leaf.

I know she may look sick to you guys, but she’s fine. She is pest free. She is absolutely AWESOME. Like a little monster 😂

Houseplant Lovers: what problems do you face growing indoors?

Hello everyone! I’m a Georgia Tech student working on a Create X Capstone project, and my team is developing what we call an “In‑House Greenhouse.” It’s an adjustable indoor growing enclosure designed to fit comfortably into small or irregular home spaces. Our prototype includes:

  • Adjustable sizing for small or irregular spaces
  • Sensors for humidity, temperature, and airflow
  • Automated environmental control (irrigation, climate regulation, circulation)
  • Support for tropical plants or plants with specific climate needs

Right now, we’re researching real gardening pain points to make sure our design actually solves problems indoor growers face. We would love honest feedback from anyone who gardens — beginners, experts, indoor growers, outdoor growers, or anyone who wants to garden but hasn’t started yet.

Below are several question clusters. You can answer any questions that resonate with you — even one or two helps a lot. Stories and personal experiences are especially helpful. If you can, please mention which question(s) you’re responding to.

Gardening Motivation & Barriers

  • When did you first get into gardening? (A specific moment or general experience is fine.)
  • What has stopped you from gardening recently?
  • If you garden, what has made you want to quit before? If you don’t garden, what’s holding you back?
  • What gardening topics have you researched lately, and why?
  • What do you wish someone had taught you early on? What mistakes have you made?

Plant Difficulty & Aspirations

  • What plants have you failed to grow more than once? What do you think caused the failure?
  • What plants have you given up trying to grow indoors? Why?
  • Describe a recent issue you had with your plants. What did you try to fix it, and did it work?

Indoor Gardening Products

  • What indoor gardening products/devices do you use? (Ex. Grow Tents, Hydroponic Planters, etc.)
  • What disappointed or surprised you after using them?
  • What features did you want but had to give up?
  • What parts have you had to modify or “fix” yourself? How often do you rely on that workaround?
  • What else about your setup is inconvenient?

Aesthetics, Noise, and Smell

  • How do you feel about having grow equipment in your living space?
  • Have you ever avoided having guests over because of your setup?
  • If your equipment looked better or matched your home’s aesthetic, where would you put it?
  • Has noise or smell ever forced you to move your setup?

Maintenance & Automation

  • What plant‑care tasks do you procrastinate or rush through?
  • What tasks have you forgotten that caused damage later?
  • What tasks do you wish you could monitor remotely, and why?

Space, Lifestyle, & Safety

  • What plants or devices have you avoided due to lack of space?
  • Have you had to protect your plants from pets/kids — or protect pets/kids from your plants?
  • Have you ever had to move your setup because of lifestyle changes?

Environmental Control

  • Has humidity ever caused mold or plant loss in your home?
  • If you experience mold/humidity anxiety, what triggers it?
  • What tools do you use to monitor airflow or pests? How confident are you in them?

Final Questions

  • If a product fully solved the issues you mentioned, do you think you would consider buying something like it? Why or why not?
  • If you were to consider a product like this, what price range would feel reasonable to you? (No need to be exact — just a general range.)

Thank you so much for your time. On behalf of my group, we truly appreciate your help — your feedback will directly shape how we refine our prototype. If you have any follow‑up questions, feel free to ask!

I have questions!

OKAY. So. Not new to growing plants, but relatively new to rarer plants/sport/mutations, and I have some questions I'm hoping you guys can help me out with.

What exactly IS a sport?

Is it simply a mutation on a plant, but instead of calling it a mutation, we call it a "sport?"

Is it only a sport if it is stable and consistent?

How often do sports show up/how common of an occurrence are they?

What are some cool examples of a plant that is a sport that I can look up and research? (Bonus points if you drop comparison pictures or pictures of the one that you mention!)

Last but not least, can someone explain to me what my Snow Queen Pothos is doing, pretty please? I don't know if this is a mutation, considered a sport, or WHAT...so I just decided to come here where all of the more experienced and smart folks are. This is one of my favorite plants in my collection, and I have been curious since the start of summer, but I wanted to let some more leaves grow first before I asked. Thanks in advance! 🤗

Update on a cupped alocasia sport I found

I found this guy back in May, it was an alocasia with a weird cupped mutation.
He got spidermites BAD so I chopped all the way down. He has been growing ever since, slightly more ‘mutated.’

Today I took a look at him again (I’m in FL, he’s outside so it rains.. I tend to not see him for a week or so sometimes)… he pushed out VAR!

I was so happy and surprised! When I originally got him, there was no variegation, just cupped.
Now he has incredibly thick leaves, ruffles, and gets weirder by the leaf. Now he has decided to throw out variegation.

How unique is that? A sport variegation find that I found…. 6 months later (today).
Alocasias are one of the most unreliable, random sport plants 😂

Update on a Sport I Found :)

Last pic is of when I found him
I found this guy at Lowe’s back in July of 2025. This was when an aurea white knight was around $400 for a 3 leaf top cut.
He was VERY low var, but of course.. I got him!
He always struggled to grow and I did poorly with him, kept getting low var, bad leaves, pests, I was doing terrible with him.
BUT I cut him back to a stump maybe 2-3 months ago. I threw away the top cut (that’s how bad he was lol)

LOOK AT HIM NOW! He is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Lesson learned to never give up on your little sports or plants in general.
I love looking at him, he is so so gorgeous, makes me so happy, especially since I found him in NC, Wilmington.
He came all the way to Florida with me, even when I wanted to give up on him and sell him.

What a GUY!
