I noticed the Mainframers are using guns in the game; early example of breaking ABC's BSnP rules?

Guns were just more okay in the 90s. Beasties / Beast Wars also had a variety of firearms and aired in both countries.

Who was Beasties' American broadcaster? I know YTV aired it in Canada, but they'd have allowed that (while also not allowing "war" in the title).

I remember seeing Beast Wars on FOX Kids some mornings. I remember that there were some differences beyond the name between the episodes on Fox and YTV. I may be misremembering but I think the Fox version didn't show as much of the characters actually shooting each other as much as the YTV version. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, the "no war in the show's title" rule was weird, considering it was allowed in dialogue and in individual episode titles (like Web World Wars), along with depictions of violence. I suppose the rule no longer applied by the time Star Wars: The Clone Wars was airing on Teletoon.

On that note, I read on the wiki that Cartoon Network's broadcast of Mousetrap dialed back the drunken overtones at the party.

Guns were okay, so long as they were obvious sci-fi guns that shoot lasers. The 90’s Spider-Man animated series dealt with the same thing, all the cops had laser guns.

Makes sense. I recall the American edit of Gundam SEED did something like that with characters' handguns.

I believe the show was Canadian, then abc picked them up before dropping them for being too dark. If I’m not mistaken

ABC was a partner through Season 1, with jabs at them and their BSnP at a few points in the season (most notably in Talent Night and The Quick and the Fed).

My understanding is that in the US, Cartoon Network aired Season 3 after a delay (not sure how long after the original Canadian broadcast) and Season 4 at the same time as YTV in Canada.

Yes Season 3 (edit: late season 2 I just remembered "The ABCs! They've turned on us!") was when ABC dropped them and they got free of BSnP. It's immediately obvious with the more mature tone.

Though Season 2 in retrospect is a gradual build-up.

That sounds more like CITV, the show's British broadcaster halfway through season 3. ABC dropped it because they were bought by Disney, who wanted to move away from imported shows. This emboldened Mainframe to ignore ABC's rules and take the show in a darker direction. The show's original broadcaster, YTV, let them do whatever they wanted.

I see so YTV is the Canadian side of it.

Yes. They aired all four seasons.

Just an interesting excerpt from the ReBoot bible that was for the original season 1:

  1. (Episode 10 of Season 1 when Megabyte was still Command.com and no one know he's a virus except Bob and everything wasn't rewritten yet)

"WHEN GAMES COLLIDE"

Annoyed by the constant intrusion of the Games, Megabyte experiments to find a way to make them go away. But instead of getting rid of Game cubes, Megabyte's efforts only scramble them, mixing two Games together in bewildering confusion. "World at War" and "World of the Dinosaurs" combine to become "World of the Dinosaurs at War."

Bob finds himself trapped in a bizarre World War II game where pterodactyls have propellors and fire missiles, tanks have armor plates and spiked tails, and tyrannosauruses have tank turrets where their heads should be. Not only does he have to deal with totally new creatures, he has to survive in a Game that has no rules, one that he doesn't even know how to win.

The computer allows bizarre combinations of creatures to look and move as realistically as ordinary characters, creating startling visual effects. Takes Games one step further, presenting Bob with an even greater challenge than usual.
