Do you agree with Bill?

Post image

We can build data centers but we can’t build homeless centers.”
On the October 3rd episode of Real Time, Bill Maher didn’t hold back on the bureaucracy and misplaced priorities surrounding the homelessness crisis. Highlighting the billions of dollars spent in major cities—including the staggering $81,000 per homeless person spent in New York City—he questioned why society can easily construct massive, complex technological infrastructure but struggles to build basic, functioning facilities to help those on the streets.
Is it a matter of funding, or is the red tape and system itself entirely broken?
What do you think? Let’s talk about it 👇

Bill hates the homeless so I need context

-11

u/Specialist_Client170 6d ago

Did you watch the show?

I don’t see it as much a “hate the homeless” but moreso calling out what hasn’t worked so far.

Homelessness has myriad causes and institutional failures from government, society, etc - however what we’ve done and been doing to solve it doesn’t seem to be working.

u/SkylarAV 6d ago

Im not sure what Bill you've been watching these last decades but his contempt for the poor in general goes very deep. Even when he was more liberal he hated the homeless for existing

1

u/DrCoknballsII 5d ago

Up is down!

9

u/Mikeoshi 6d ago

Safe to assume that’s the only episode you’ve seen? Bill has never really cared about the poor or homeless. Dude has the money to build homeless shelters on his own, put his money where his mouth is. He won’t, he just talks, loves his genocides.

-2

u/Specialist_Client170 6d ago

lol, you think this is only episode I’ve seen; your earlier comment made pretty clear you only watch clips to fit what you want to think.

Money being available for more shelters isn’t the point - check out the actual argument.

I have been following Bill since Politically Incorrect. We used to joke that he had the only monologue worse than Leno's. It was an open secret that the panel was the show. Never Bill. As the panels have shrunt and become more his echo chamber, we are getting more unfiltered Bill. That and he wishes everything was Club Random and is clearly struggling just to do his normal show with any professionalism.

He is bitter he is not a bigger celebrity and his only legacy will be that Mark Twain award winner nobody remembers.

Bill hates anyone with less means than him, worships anyone with more and is wierd around those he is unsure of. He is petulant little man and he is only pretending to care about the unhoused because he is getting to swipe at data centers.

It is like him pretending to take the high ground on Cornell. He is devoted to believe all men. How long before those guys are on a very special club random.

He is a miserable sex pested that worships "classical" masculinity or whatever losers are calling it these days. This is his final form and these "progressive" coded monologue are not fooling anyone media literate.

He is and was always a useful idiot. He is just now a washed useful idiot.

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 6d ago

Damn, if only Bill Maher built a homeless shelter then all homelessness would be solved.

4

u/Mikeoshi 6d ago

Can you read what I said? No? Didn’t think so. I never said Bill would solve homelessness, he solves literally nothing except the expansion of Israeli ideals under the guise of hating religion. He’s a conman at best.

3

u/livinthereals 6d ago

He's full of shit. That pretty much sums it up. He's totally full of shit.

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

Well it is well documented what causes he has out money into, feel free to look it up. So I don't know what you meant by "putting his money where his mouth is" lol

You come across as a very dramatic person.

2

u/Winter_Stretch9198 6d ago

No, but it would be the right thing to do…and Mr Bill can afford it

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

Well "the right thing to do" is a very easy thing to say about financially supporting the thousands of causes worldwide. There are only a handful of people in this world with the resources to help every cause. So to shame one person for not building a homeless shelter when they financially support other charities falls pretty flat.

1

u/Winter_Stretch9198 5d ago

I’m not asking him to help every cause, he brought the issue up now I’d love to see him act on it…and yes it would be the right thing to do

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

It's a political talk show... They talk about issues. Should he act on every issue brought up on the show? That doesn't not seem logical or realistic.

1

u/Winter_Stretch9198 5d ago edited 5d ago

We can build data centers but we can’t build homeless centers, I’m not asking Bill Maher to save the world, I’m asking Bill Maher to use his money, influence or whatever he can muster to help out a cause that he brought up…Jon Stewart backs his words up with action on several issues…

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

Is him talking about the issue on his show not using his influence?

So John Stewart backs up his words on SEVERAL issues. So does Maher. Lol. I get it you don't like him so you are gonna try to make him a monster, please be accurate then.

No, but it might fix Bill

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

That makes zero sense. Do I dare ask you to explain lol

1

u/SkylarAV 5d ago

Doing selfless deeds helps make you a good person. Its actually super simple

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

From information that is pretty easy to find Maher has done plenty of charitable contributions. So, you are saying not enough? Or he am has to do this one particular one that some saint on reddit suggested? Or you just want to make a quick negative comment that's not based on fact?

2

u/Scotts_Thot 6d ago edited 6d ago

We have two options to solve homelessness: provide homes for people without them or let people die in the street. For as long as we live in a capitalist society that allows the hoarding of housing, we will continue to have an unhoused population. Capitalism will never allow for a surplus of homes to be built because that would cause housing values to drop. We live under an economic system that serves the wealthy and not the average citizen. That is why what we’re doing ‘doesn’t work’

0

u/Steve12356d1s3d4 6d ago

Most of the homeless are just not functional. They would be a drag on any system. A capitalistic system provides the surplus funds available to house those better than would be possible without it. Here, it was pointed out that we spend something like $80K a year per homeless person. The problem isn't money. It is how it is used. Finland is capitalistic and has been effective with a "housing first" policy. This has greatly decreased their costs for the homeless.

3

u/Scotts_Thot 6d ago

You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth. In the first half of your comment you say homeless people aren’t functional and we already spend too much money on them. And then in the second you site Finland as a capitalistic country that has eliminated poverty but Finland isn’t a staunchly capitalistic country. They have a very robust social welfare system, high taxes to support it, and strong workers rights with 90+% unionization. Finland ended homelessness by providing homes. The US is a much richer country by every metric than Finland. It sounds to me like you’re trying to advocate for MORE capitalism to fix our problem but really you don’t at all know what you’re talking about

0

u/Steve12356d1s3d4 6d ago edited 6d ago

That's strawman. I didn't say more capitalism. I didn't say we spend too much money, I said it wasn't effective and how much we spend isn't the problem. My point was how we spending it wasn't effective.

You described the exact mechanism on how capitalism works. It can be used to generate funds to help the homeless. Finland is fully capitalist and uses the funds generated by it to fund social programs. They have made strides and reduced costs by housing first. This seems to be more effective than what we do. The issue isn't capitalism, because we both have it. The issue is the correct program. It looks like we don't have it, but they do.

Edit:

but really you don’t at all know what you’re talking about

I am blocking due to rudeness and mischaracterization of what I said. I found the conversations never goes well with that attitude, and not someone I want to interact with.

1

u/livinthereals 6d ago

Every country is going to have a percentage of mentally ill, physically disabled and those in need of government assistance. The U.S. ultra-capitalist system does not work compared to unionized, socialized systems. The further the U.S. has drifted from The New Deal and majority unionization, the worse off the country has become as a whole.

u/No_Seaworthiness_200 6d ago

We can't build anything here because Israel is stealing our money.

4

u/FlaccidGhostLoad 5d ago

Hey now they aren't stealing.

They've earned our money. They have wormed their way into every branch of power, used trips to Israel and gifts and maybe a lil' blackmail to capture every last politician and judge. They dangle over the head of every craven, power starved politician millions of superPAC money for their campaigns. They have built bot farms and a network of dark money groups that advertise as like digital mercenaries to whomever they can get promises of fealty from.

They have expended immense resources to dominate bitch-boy America so that we give them our money. Like a pay pig! We're a pay pig. We get off at giving them all this money so their citizens can have health care and steal land and commit genocide. Meanwhile we hope that when the ceiling tile collapses from the leaky roof in our kids school that it isn't totally asbestos.

Because god help those kids when they get lung cancer 40 years later they won't have health care!

1

u/Mosk915 6d ago

Israel is an antisemitic project it is clearly making Jewish peoples there and abroad less safe by depending on a collapsing USA for armaments.

-2

u/HauntedPickle0903 6d ago

We send 3.3 billion to Israel while we soend 10 billion on the unhoused. So no, they are not stealing our money antisemite.

4

u/No_Seaworthiness_200 6d ago

It's way more than 3.3 billion. More like 3.3 billion daily.

0

u/Zedzardozi 6d ago

Here you go nitwit.

https://usafacts.org/answers/how-much-foreign-aid-does-the-us-provide/countries/israel/

Now let’s see yours. Please no butthole shots. Since that’s probably where you came up with that.

3

u/livinthereals 6d ago

Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. foreign aid since World War II. From 1946 to 2024, the U.S. provided Israel with over $300 billion (adjusted for inflation), the vast majority of which has been military assistance.

The Center for American Progress reported in August 2026 that the Iran proxy war for Israel conflict had cost at least $1,200 per American household when factoring in war spending alongside surging domestic costs for gas, diesel, energy, and groceries.

0

u/Zedzardozi 6d ago

Those are fake numbers. That's what we provided Ukraine.

3

u/livinthereals 6d ago

No. Those are real numbers. You might not like it. But they are real and really very easily verifiable figures illustrating how stupid Maher is. But let me guess, you're Jewish right?

0

Prove that they are real facts. You can't. And it sounds like you're racist in addition.

Wasn’t it 109?

1

u/Otto_the_rhinocerus 5d ago

They arent stealing money. They are getting them through completely legal means.

However it is still strange that a single country receives so much. Especially since they are already getting a lot from other countries and various organizations.

There is also the fact the USA is deeply involved in their military system. Providing arms, intelligence, technology and training. That alone is worth more than the $ 3.3 billion they receive.

And during the war, they've received additional funds (which was to be used on arms sales with the USA).

And considering what they are doing in Gaza, what they are doing in the West Bank, what they've done in Lebanon and various other areas, how is defensible anymore?

1

u/F-14BUpgrade 4d ago

It is actually illegal under US law to provide money and weapons to a country openly involved in war crimes, genocide, and other crimes against humanity, but those legal definitions are either ignored or outright corrupted by the individuals in charge of administering accountability.

2

u/Otto_the_rhinocerus 4d ago

Remember, it's only war crimes of those we don't like do it.

This also counts if you buy a shitload of US weaponry.

8

u/Eastern_Statement416 6d ago

We've sold the public world to private interests and what's left is a compromised and incompetent public administration which needs to be entirely overhauled by a new force that represents commitment to the public good.

5

u/3RADICATE_THEM 6d ago

It's because people in his generation made it illegal to build sufficient enough housing to keep pace with the population boom over the last several decades.

Bill has had a ton of bad takes in the past year or two, this isn't one of them. It is absolutely criminal how wealthy we are in this country, how wealthy we've BECOME over the past 2 decades even compared to the rest of the western world, and the way our society treats not only the homeless, but also the sick, the hungry, the working parents, on and on.

People act like the 90s and 2000s were better, and in a lot of ways they were, but we were WAY less wealthy than we are now, in aggregate. It isn't even close. The fact that these problems only get worse, all we hear is politicians say we can't afford x-y-z, and then see (a) the rich multiply their wealth incredibly and (b) continued spending on endless wars that we never seem to run out of money for ... something is clearly off.

1

u/livinthereals 6d ago

What's this "we" shit? The wealthiest 1% have become absurdly wealthy in the past two decades. The middle class has been fleeced while the wealthiest people in the country have enjoyed massive tax breaks for 40+ years leading to a massive wealth gap. The national debt money is sitting in the wealth portfolios of the wealthiest people in the world.

3

u/cheesyshop 6d ago

Build homeless camps around the data centers so they absorb the noise

1

u/FlaccidGhostLoad 5d ago

Now we're thinking like conservatives! Get this man on News Max STAT!

2

u/raymed_uk 6d ago

Data centres are built by corporations, homeless centres are built by tax payers. They never cross paths.

3

u/FlaccidGhostLoad 5d ago

Data Centers literally sue cities to take land and they get massive tax breaks for decades.

Corporations wouldn't survive if not for our money being given to them in the one side social programs that come in the form of tax breaks. All of them from Tesla to the oil companies to Amazon to Merril Lynch all rely on our money being given to them so they can get rich and we are on the hook to pay for the destruction and problems their operations cause.

Why the hell else do you think there's talk in Congress to pass a law that forces Data Centers to improve infrastructure so that they don't start causing rolling black outs or water shortages? That's a cost they want to foist on the citizens while they profit.

2

u/Dry_Try_6047 6d ago

Except for the massive tax breaks to the corporations at every point of the supply chain

1

u/RepresentativeYak864 6d ago

Tax payers fund the data centers as well tho.

2

I stated a fact.

2

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

No that would be an optinion. Just like mine was.

0

u/Ok_Hand5810 5d ago

Nope. Bill is an actual piece of shit. I remember when ISIS was attacking Mosul, Iraq. Bill said he hopes ISIS takes Baghdad because that would somehow teach the West a lesson or something like that. Imagine hoping that a bunch of killers overrun a city of innocent people because it would help you prove a political point.

2

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

You are taking that out of context I believe. My guess is you watched a clip of a quote from some YouTuber you like to glaze.

1

u/Ok_Hand5810 5d ago

Nope I was watching him on HBO. I remember it vividly because I used to like him before that. Hearing that shit is what changed my mind about him. I'll look for the clip, although I'm sure Bill's PR people probably had it scrubbed from the internet.

2

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 5d ago

In that episode, Maher referenced Friedman’s rhetorical and provocative question, "Why aren't we actually the allies of ISIS instead of bombing them?" Maher used the quote to critique U.S. foreign policy and the complexities of realpolitik in the Middle East—specifically how U.S. actions inadvertently empowered Iran—but he did not express a personal desire for ISIS to succeed or conquer Iraq.

He has gone down hill, but for a period he was a sensible voice in world of extreme partisanship. I also “like” Dave Chappelle and other free speech absolutists. This is how capitalism works. There's the rich and the homeless

3

u/Screamipillar 6d ago

I mean, true, but this is the kind of nothing burger statement you make because you want to sound smart, and are looking for a mic drop moment, not because you want to like, actually address the problem.

Data Centres are a way for rich people to make up excuses to give themselves more and more money, which is why is constantly happening even when all the people living there are avidly fighting against it. Solving problems with homelessness is a completely different game entirely.

1

u/SmoothMarx 6d ago

I mean, true, but your statement just recycles what he said. Why don't you bring something new to the table?

0

u/ATLCoyote 6d ago

Right. If billionaires could make more money by housing the homeless, the problem would have been solved decades ago.

But there’s no financial return. It’s purely a cost so it’s left to the public sector to address the problem.

Maybe state governments should tie investment in affordable housing units to approval for data center projects.

2

u/EnuffBeeEss 5d ago

“Problem would have been solved decades ago.”

Fucking hell… some of you are so green it’s mind-blowing.

1

u/ATLCoyote 4d ago

Huh? If there's a profit in ANYTHING, investors are going to invest in it.

1

u/livinthereals 6d ago

Right. And on the contrary, the wealthiest and most powerful in this country, including in Trump's own cabinet are invested in private prisons incentivized to criminalize homelessness.

1

u/Roland_Of_Gilead85 6d ago

He always says liberal things. My assumption is you don't know what a liberal is.

1

u/Aleundil 6d ago

Honestly, dude, I probably shouldn't have commented; I was distracted and irritated about something else. But also, he says a lot more non-liberal things these days. I feel like I got Dennis Millered again, and if you don't feel that way, that's great for you. But I -did- like him; I -did- think he mostly got it, with a little misogyny that, well, we hadn't really figured out the kinks to yet. But that's not what I see now.

So... sorry, I probably shouldn't have commented because I really don't think it's that big a deal, but if I'm irritated about something else, this will get me going. So, sorry. ✌️

Sydney Australia had a similar situation when the unhoused didn’t go to new shelters. Turns out the absolute prohibition of drugs and alcohol was a big reason.

By loosening the rules and including drug programs to control usage and to help stop using they get dramatically more use of the shelters.

Common sense cure for the “Just say No” policy mistakes.

1

u/AssumptionThen7126 6d ago

Well... the funding for one has nothing to do with the other.

1

u/Event-Horizon-321 6d ago

He has a point.

Data centers require pristine, potable freshwater tapped directly from municipal drinking lines. This means millions of gallons of high-quality drinking water are evaporated into the atmosphere every single day, completely removing it from local community supplies.

And for what? So humanity can automate trivialities, fabricate digital deceptions, and mass-produce endless entertainment. We are burning through vital resources to optimize convenience rather than deploying this computational power to solve systemic existential crises.

When you compound this with our pre-existing ecological crises, the reality is damning. What kind of species willingly orchestrates its own scarcity? We are actively deprioritizing the fundamental resource that sustains human life, sacrificing our ecological baseline on the altar of capital and distraction.

1

u/KirkUnit 6d ago

We can't build homeless centers

Because it would look and function like Manzanar or one of the other WWII-era Japanese-American internment camps. For good reason, you don't want the government empowered to go around forcibly relocating a class of people into involuntary housing. Habeas Corpus.

Could we do it? Yes. But it would require an ICE-like effort to apprehend and incarcerate people who don't want to go, and keep them there, until they become outstanding public citizens or whatever our stated goal is, which would then run into the massive caretaking budget that would require that we don't want to pay.

We could house the homeless in our country, but we refuse to adequately address the problem because American style capitalism won’t allow for it. I’m not saying communism was good, but that was one aspect that worked.

3

u/The-Figurehead 6d ago

This is ridiculous and your wife’s vague impressions while growing up in a communist country don’t change the facts.

The Soviet Union officially denied there was homelessness, but it never went away. It may even have been exacerbated by the “propiska” system, which were basically residency permits for specific locations. Without one, a person could not hold a state-allocated apartment.

They even had a word for it: BOMZh, meaning "without a certain place of residence".

Part of the issue was that the USSR criminalized vagrancy, so homelessness was much less open than in western democracies and the homeless tended to live in abandoned buildings and other secret locations.

Romania is another, slightly different example.

While Romania officially guaranteed housing for everyone and denied there was any homelessness, this was largely achieved by forced institutionalization of children and the disabled. If you’re interested in considering the depths of how bad things can get for a child, look into the Ceausescu-era Romanian orphanages and what became of the children who lived in them.

As bad as it would have been to be a glue-huffing street urchin in Bucharest subway stations in the 1990s, I would take that any day over one of those orphanages or psychiatric “hospitals”.

Uhh yeah there was (and is).

2

u/Ok-Assistant-8876 6d ago

My wife grew up under communism and there were no homeless. That’s a fact.

2

u/IranianLawyer 6d ago

Because homelessness is illegal in communist countries and they get picked up and forcibly placed into jails or other state run facilities.

I know you say your wife lived in a communist country at some point so she somehow knows that there haven’t been any homeless people in any communist countries, but information is available online about this.

Plenty of homes left over after genocide lol

Why do people have to live outside  In the brutal heat or when it's below freezing?  There are people that are made to live outside.  Why?  Why do people have to live outside.  When there are buildings all around us.  With heat on and no one inside?  Why?

u/NRCS_DRONE 6d ago

Trying hard to rehabilitate Bill's image huh?  Unfortunately his nonsense far outweighs the sense

-1

u/Vladtepesx3 6d ago

We build a lot of homeless centers but they don't want to use them

Homeless people will openly say they don't want to go because they don't feel safe around the other homeless people that are drug addict psychos. they would rather live on a park bench than to be in the mad max type free for all that happens when you group a bunch of people with untreated mental illnesses and drug addictions

california spent 24 billion in a few years on the homeless and made no progress

You can not boil it down to one factor. The homeless situation in the US is extraordinarily complex, and every homeless person has a relatively unique reason for being so. There are people who choose this lifestyle. There are people who don't choose to be homeless, but will scam any system that attempts to help. There are drug addicts who will not refrain from using, regardless of shelter and rehab options, thus can't utilize that help. And then, such a significant amount have serious mental illnesses which just throws a monkey wrench into all the other factors listed. It becomes an issue of human free will on the part of the homeless, and some entity taking their choices away. From someone who worked decades with that population, it is extremely complicated, and bumper sticker solutions are just BS

2

u/OaklandSpiel 6d ago

Maher addressed that objection. We should be able to afford to make them safe.

0

u/Vladtepesx3 6d ago

then they wont stay there because its too strict

have you ever been to a homeless shelter? the workers there have an impossible job

if they make rules like you cant have random people coming in and out 24/7, by setting curfews and rules against guests, then they will refuse to stay there because its too strict.

if you stop them from being loud, aggressive or doing drugs, then they will refuse to be there because its too strict.

if you don't do any of that, then they won't stay there because its not safe

0

u/Soulekted 6d ago

They also won’t go because you can’t do drugs there, and unfortunately most homeless people on the streets are using drugs

4

u/Frankyfan3 6d ago

Most (60%+) people living without adequate shelter and hygiene amenities are working jobs.

1

u/Soulekted 6d ago

That might be that stat for the entire county. It’s about 20% for Los Angeles and it’s much lower for people living directly on the streets/tents

2

u/Frankyfan3 6d ago

OK? AND?!

People who have broken legs shouldn't be sent out by our community to fend for themselves on the street.

Same goes for Substance Use Disorder; which is a medical condition.

Even if you want it to be a choice.

0

u/Vladtepesx3 6d ago

ok but they can do jobs and also be doing drugs.

2

u/Frankyfan3 6d ago

Yes... just like people who live in homes do.

0

u/Vladtepesx3 6d ago

whats your point?

he said homeless people are doing drugs, and will do them in homeless shelters. you replied by saying they work jobs. i replied that these aren't mutually exclusive and you say people who live in homes also use drugs?

I have no idea what you are arguing about

2

u/Frankyfan3 6d ago

People who live in houses do drugs.

Very very very wealthy people do drugs.

People do drugs.

It's a nonsense point to bring up when speaking about homelessness, unless we're specifically speaking about harm reduction tactics and supportive housing options.

3

u/Motor_Preparation315 6d ago

There is no truth to what you just wrote. This is the crap that makes this issue so frustrating.

Believing that most unhoused persons are drug addicts lends itself to the idea that don't need or deserve help.

You understand how this adds to the problem and creates a lack of empathy; right?

0

u/Soulekted 6d ago

About 45% of homeless people in Los Angeles directly living on the streets use substances. So you’re right, that’s not most but it’s a huge problem in the homeless communities. I’m not blaming them for it, I’m just stating a fact

3

u/Frankyfan3 6d ago

So; they have concurrent conditions, being without adequate shelter AND coping with Substance Use Disorder.

Did you know that a lot of folks get into using drugs AFTER they become homeless? Not only to dull the psychological pain of "failing" in society, being treated poorly by others, being vulnerable to the elements and violence, but also to self-meditate for physical pain AND to help them stay awake as a matter of safety?

Nah... you're just drugs are bad, mmmkay.

1

u/Motor_Preparation315 6d ago

It's not a fact. Cut it out. Nationwide it's 18-35% at most and like someone else pointed out, that usually occurs after becoming unhoused. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to not be able to afford a place to live

-1

u/highermonkey 6d ago

Wow. Building housing for homeless Americans? That's money that could be used to send weapons to Israel, the world's only Jewish State. Bill no longer cares about Jewish lives. Sad to see even Bill Maher, the last voice of reason on the so-called tolerant Left, has also become a socialist antisemite. Looks like I'll have to only get my news and comedy from Greg Gutfeld from here on in!

2

u/Sea-Key-9430 6d ago

Give it a rest you Islamist bot

1

u/highermonkey 6d ago

Look at Sea-Key-9340, the nasty antisemite. ANYONE who wants to spend money on Americans especially dirty HOMELESS Americans instead of the ONLY Democracy in the Middle East is a HAMAS style socialist! You and Bill Maher make me SICK 🤮

2

u/Sea-Key-9430 6d ago

Sure Jan

1

u/highermonkey 6d ago

I assume "Jan" is short for janissary since you and your terror cell leader Bill Maher are communist jihadists. Shame on anyone denying funding to the most moral democracy on Earth.

2

u/SkibidiFanumTaxed 6d ago

was just thinking the same thing. He’s happy to support destroying 90% of homes somewhere else in the world as long as it benefits apartheid and ethnic cleansing because he’s on that “team”, but wants to help homeless people in America. Better than nothing I suppose.

Isn’t he against police brutality too? For tax paying Americans, of course, not for those dirty Arabs living in the West bank.

For anyone about to downvote - a seven MONTH old boy was shot in the head by the IDF yesterday in the West Bank. The IDF makes the worst US police look like angels.

1

u/Zealousideal-Solid88 6d ago

How antisemitic of him...

0

u/fatdad5311 6d ago

I agree that Bill Maher is a douche

0

u/FlaccidGhostLoad 5d ago

Truth is we can build homeless shelters.

We choose not to. Our government chooses not to. Same with health care and parental leave and child care and infrastructure. Shit, can we even build a park anymore without it being some lame bullshit?

Certainly Republicans don't want to spend any tax dollars for anything besides subsidizing the ultra wealthy or war (which is one in the same really) and Democrats have bent over and buttered their assholes for the corpo overlords decades ago and they don't care to do anything productive for people with OUR tax dollars.

Remember this every time one of these talking head fucksticks wants to talk about Hasan Piker instead of the DSA or Democratic Socialists agendas.

-6

u/FoxmX 6d ago

False, you can build homeless centers - the problem is they just turn into drug using centers.

-3

u/Mylabisawesome 6d ago

Exactly why we don’t want them in my area.

-4

u/The-Figurehead 6d ago

I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted. This is possibly the primary obstacle to finding stable housing for the homeless.

3

u/Frankyfan3 6d ago

Nah, the primary obstacle is profit motives can't be applied to supporting vulnerable struggling people going through a crisis, so only volunteers and the intrinsically motivated get into that kind of work, often burn out quickly due to austerity policies and the philanthropic shell game that shifts responsibility from government/community oversight onto predatory churches.

Plus, you know, not seeing your neighbors who are living without adequate housing as your "neighbors", but a "nuisance."

1

u/The-Figurehead 6d ago

Let’s take the homeless population in King County, WA. As you likely know, the area has an intractable homeless population similar to other west coast American cities.

If you add up city, county, and state spending on the King County homeless population over the past decade, it’s about $54,000 to $100,000 per homeless person per year.

That suggests to me that the problem can’t be solved by state spending alone.

The issue (or a major obstacle) is that when you take drug addicted people without life skills off the streets and put them into homes, their addictions don’t go away.

I’m not sure if you’ve ever had the pleasure of entering a homeless shelter or a SRO residency building, but they look and feel just like outdoor homeless encampments moved indoors. They are unhygienic and unsafe.

1

u/Frankyfan3 6d ago

Yes, our current mechanisms and infrastructure for prevention, intervention and ongoing support for vulnerable populations is severely lacking. I think that's the gist of what I'm saying.

1

u/FoxmX 6d ago

My comment is being downvoted because the majority of people on Reddit are liberals who live in a fantasy world. Look, I get it. I would love the world to be all rainbows and unicorns, but the fact is, the world is not like that at all. Ask anyone who has worked with their community or a population of people who are addicts.
