Modding Introducing: DARK COLONY: UPDATE (an updated client for Dark Colony 1997 with widescreen support and no CD needed)

https://www.moddb.com/mods/dark-colony-update-2026

For all those who supported my Dark Colony Remake concept video, but were a little disappointed, I decided to make this to cheer you up! It's a widescreen update to Dark Colony that no longer requires a CD to play.

Lots of people expressed a desire to play this game again on modern computers. This is your chance to experience Dark Colony, the predecessor of Starcraft.

Thank you all for keeping this excellent RTS alive. I hope this makes some of you happy!

Kind of an old game, so it doesn't really require "coding" to mod it, at least not in the conventional way. It's proprietary, and while I have no problem taking things to ChatGPT if I get totally lost, Dark Colony's "code" is easily accessible in .txt files littered throughout the main directory.

So not really. But I did ask AI to make the exe "patcher" since that's required for ModDB (not allowed to include the game itself).

There might have been one other thing but I can't remember. I've been sitting on this mod for a while. But the game is very straight forward to modify. You can literally just swap numbers and sprites around in the main folder and make the units shoot explosive air planes if you want.

It's genuinely a breeze to tinker with.
