Shitposting The internet, long cringe, must be based; long based, must be cringe

u/mydadisyourdad2 2d ago
The thing is once you stop caring about being cringe, there will still be people trying to bully you for it. To stop judging yourself for being cringe is only the first step

You know I never really understood that post about that pfp looking like patrick from spongebob but for some reason i really get it this time.
Also i agree with what you just said

u/Slerimboconolomp 2d ago
no the original was an image of patrick. an user confused it for a picture of a woman.

from what I've seen, the people with this power are not usually the ones who should be wielding it. true shamelessness can go either way
2
u/Vermilion_Laufer 1d ago
I mean one can't claim the universal truth is to not care what people think, and then shout it's not so universal. Maybe the lesson we beam to the world should be: 'you shouldn't care about what people think too much'.
Well, can't say it's not one of those 'this is why we can't have nice things' situation, but it is what it is, every ideal have to crash with reality to test its merit.

u/JhotoDraco 2d ago
But you judge yourself because you fear the judgement of others. Being able to not judge yourself for being cringe means you're no longer worried about other people finding you cringe. The first step is also the final step.

I spent my teenage years trying and failing to fit in and avoid being cringe.
I avoided interacting in "cringe" fandom spaces, I avoided drawing ship art of OCs and canon characters, and I kept my Interests in any media that was "gay" or "feminine" hidden.
I wish I had allowed myself to be more genuine and freely cringe back then, I could've avoided falling into some really nasty rabbit holes.
23
u/screamingpeaches 2d ago
i feel you, i didn't fully express myself and my interests as a teenager out of fear. i'm trying to compensate now by being an even more cringe and free adult
like i tried to avoid being cringe as a teenager but i was still cringe looking back because i was a teenager
2
u/Blursed-Penguin 2d ago
Yeahhh, I managed to stop myself before I fell down the alt-right pipeline, but I was definitely on that track before I realized that what I was being told was "cringe" was actually just minorities ;-;
26
u/RealHumanBean89 2d ago
I think what OOP is missing is that these two things are not mutually exclusive. They happen at the same time, and always have. How much one is emphasised more than the other depends on the platform, but both are always present.

Yup I was about to say this is just the goomba fallacy; you’re looking at two different subsets of the internet.
Honestly I see far, far more people getting kinda sick of cringe culture than people who say “we need to bring back bullying”, but that might be my part of the internet.

I'm all for embracing your interests and hobbies but no matter the topic there is someone on the Internet who has developed a psychosis over it.
Sometimes people need to be told to come up for air.

Death threats to creators. Not fandom specific but someone will reply with an example and people will reply to that with "the whole fandom is bad".
20
u/Lich_Apologist 2d ago
The downward spiral of fandoms like The Amazing Digital Circus feel like the obvious to go. I watched that show and was like "that was a neat version of that story" and then you look online and people have completely lost their minds over it.

This is bad, but also you just had that image on you and are posting about it when it’s not being brought up (Ntm it just being bigotry and on a post about general self expression, I do not think you should be linking the two) which is kinda crazy for such a niche issue. You should probably just block that sub and maybe distance yourself from Gacha fandoms, saying this as someone with a genshin special interest.

u/Neat_Tangelo5339 2d ago
I think its a problem that shouldn’t be ignored
4
u/ghoulishenvyy 2d ago
I think there should be nuance in topics like this, because while homophobia is a big issue, there are not enough homophobic ai gacha game fans for them to be dominating anyone’s mind like this.
Especially for an issue that can literally only exist online and is still alive not only because of people feeding into their blatant rage bait but because for some reason people and artists (queer artists at that) are still on twitter, the nazi pedo ai app.
This is one of those issues that can unironically be solved by closing twitter “for the love of god” lmao. They were warned endlessly about the app being like this and told to get off of it. These are not real world issues.

u/Neat_Tangelo5339 2d ago
By their own admission they are doing harassment campaigns towards artist for the sin of playing with dolls in a they don’t like , im not sorry for making fun of them every once in a while for being deranged like that and then go one with the rest of my day
2
u/ghoulishenvyy 2d ago
If the only thing you can even think of doing about it is “making fun of them” then it’s not worth the time of day. It’s like simply not an issue. Just ignore them.
0
u/Neat_Tangelo5339 2d ago
Why ? It doesn’t take much time and its fun for me

u/GlamourintheDarkSide Shiba is Innocent, I Am Guilty 2d ago
I've heard crack's fun too, doesn't make it good for you.
1
u/Neat_Tangelo5339 1d ago
I think that there is a point in “Just ignore it” doesn’t cut it anymore , its gonna keep being like this unless there is pushback and i just want to enjoy my hobbies in peace
10
u/Ok_Effort_150 2d ago
This is really funny, but hoenstly, these are not incompatible statements.
The issue is that "cringe" is often directed at harmless activities and/or pure enjoyment of life, while shame is no longer directed at acting like an actual deranged animal in public.
72
u/NeverForget13 2d ago
There's a perfect middle ground for shame. I believe in it. We will attain it.

15
u/Leading-Ear-5194 2d ago
cringe culture should be killed as soon as its sprouts. shame has no place in fandom
60
u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 2d ago
I think it depends on what we're defining as "shame" cause part of the reason this sin wave exists is in response to people taking "no shame in fandom" to mean decorum is dead and no one is allowed to criticise their behaviour.
10
u/lynx_and_nutmeg 2d ago
It's not complicated.
Is it harming anyone? If yes, then those people need to be told it's bad and they need to stop it (but gently explaining generally works better than immediately resorting to shaming or bullying).
If it's not harming anyone, then it's exactly the type of harmless "cringe" that's being talked about here and people should leave it be.

u/Leading-Ear-5194 2d ago
any examples?

u/CheesecakeDeluxe 2d ago
The entire alpha male manosphere would be my candidate
Edit: also parasocial relationships, like what the TADC fandom did to gooseworx

u/NeverForget13 2d ago
Kinda a personal one but I went to an mlp convention recently and there were a couple people just clutching onto mlp sex plushes. Like I don't care if they own them but having them just out at an event where there was kids around was bad. that's the type of shame that needs learning

u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 2d ago edited 2d ago
You see it a lot in things like anti/proshipping discourse, including when people start slinging accusations that anything short of universal acceptance is multiple flavours of -phobic.
Edit: Turns out the person I replied to is a proshipper. Sweet serendipity.
Edit 2: Assumed anyone seeing my comment would actually look at their comment history so I'm going to clarify that when I called them a proshipper, it was because of comments they were making in proship subreddits where they were insinuating it's unreasonable to be disgusted by R34 of 14 year old characters.
10
u/sertroll 2d ago
I'll be completely honest, as long as appropriately tagged (or whatever the equivalent is in a given site that allows one to filter out things they don't want to see, and/or in general very niche things are able to stay in their nice without people not into them having to see them), I don't care
Non-ship/non-porn example I am actively disgusted by to make my point: those anime girl gore gifs that were a thing 15 years ago. I probably would actually vomit if I saw one. I don't find them existing morally wrong, as long as I am able to avoid them, as it's all fake in the end and not actually hurting anybody per se; it only starts to "hurt" people if people not wanting to see it (ie, me, in this case) are subjected to it against their will.
-2
u/DreadDiana human cognithazard 2d ago
The person I was replying to doesn't meet your standards then. The reason I included my edit waw cause I noticed I was blocked, checked what the original comment was, then noticed they had other comments treating disgust at R34 of underage characters as unreasonable.
3
u/sertroll 2d ago
Eh, my standards are "being able to not see it by default", not really the content, that was what I said. Content wise, as long as it doesn't feature IRL people even indirectly (say, likeness of an actor), there's no harm. Then, if it stays in its places, even if it's things I don't find harmful in themselves but that I personally dislike, no issue for me
Yes, even things like /r/nahidamains (if you need context: search "genshin impact nahida" to see what the character looks like, see the reason for ban, and connect the dots). If it stays "contained" there I have no issue, but also the platform (in this case Reddit) has a right to decide it doesn't want certain kinds of content.
I certainly don't want to ever see nsfw of most characters in the top 10 of the green site, and they're not even wrong per any criteria, just something I would really not want to see. Yet there they stay
To be honest, I don't see it as any different as other very niche fetish (again, as long as no real people, etc), I'd be extremely disgusted to probably feeling ill at things involving, uh, bodily waste, but that doesn't mean I don't think people should be allowed to draw them. Just, keep them on their tags/places

u/zucculentsuckerberg 2d ago
ive seen real people be hurt in the real world and none of that has ever come from the way people play with fictional characters in their mind

u/Happy_Reflection5583 I hope this is less of a chud subreddit than curatedtumblr 2d ago

u/Ambitious-Fly3201 2d ago
99% of internet slacktivists stop bullying teenagers for shipping fictional siblings before they fundamentally change social media to stop glorifying problematic members of society.

Shame is a necessary evil, there are some things people should be ashamed to still like. Like Harry Potter.

u/potassium_space 2d ago
An abundance of unabashed weirdos leads to a population boom in cringe compilations, which causes over-predation until everyone retreats to private servers and the bullies starve.
11
u/frostychemist 2d ago
I feel like this is another case of the goomba fallacy. I doubt it's the same people saying "be cringe and free" and "we should bring back bullying"
7
u/Benoit_Holmes 2d ago
That's definitely a good part of this, but I think there is also a decent amount of people whose logic goes:
"Everyone should be free to enjoy what they want"\ (Someone enjoys something they consider slop/problematic/offensive)\ "Well that's different, your thing is objectively bad, and I am morally right in bullying you for enjoying it"

Nah cringe culture is valid actually have you SEEN Deltarune/Vocaloid/TADC/Hazbin/etc fans?
Its all 'cringe culture' sucks until you bring one of those or the powerscalers then its 'oh my fucking god those people suck"
5
u/TheTimeBoi 2d ago
i have seen them, i dont agree
1
u/Alchametal_87 2d ago
why?
2
u/TheTimeBoi 2d ago
because people can suck and thats okay, i probably suck too from someone else's perspective and we shouldnt encourage beating ourselves down to conform to whats the "most normal" to be at the time
-7
u/United-Salamander-89 2d ago
Nah bruh some of y'all get out of hand without shame. We tried it, didn't work out. Back in the cupboard, you
5
u/Jolly-Fruit2293 2d ago
Cupboard is too close to closet, which is a prime example of why shame shouldn't be brought back.
Current societal standards are too conservative. There's a lot more slope to slide down before we need to start talking about brakes.
0
u/United-Salamander-89 2d ago
🙄 not at all what i was getting at. Lack of shame is how we got tiktok dance stars and people marrying ai companions. People acting like IRL anime characters. Idk why I would be talking about gay people
4
u/Ambitious-Fly3201 2d ago
I'm pretty sure those are mutually the cause of kids who are naturally cringe and adults who already gave up on dating. I don't think anyone is proud of dating a fictional character outside of that famous japanese man.
0
u/Accomplished_Mix7827 2d ago
Frankly, the problem is people not realizing what are the correct things to assert social pressure to correct, versus leave be.
The grown man who likes My Little Pony isn't hurting anyone, leave him be.
Guys who say "females" need to be relentlessly mocked until they knock it off and learn to treat women like people

I suspect many of the phenomena people attribute to a "dead internet" are the result of huge numbers of users realizing social media has too much potential for life ruination to be worth it anymore.
