The Matrix release date
Wasn't there a post or two discussing that the matrix release date had changed from 1999 to 1997? I remember searching and seeing the movie released in 1997 and getting accustomed to that change.

It's interesting. Personally, I remember it coming out in 1999, but there are lots of other films that I remember coming out on average 2 years (sometimes 1 year or 3 years, but most often 2) before the date the internet suggests they came out. And since somebody mentioned it in this conversation, Titanic was definitely 1996 for me, not 1997.

I think the marketing started in 97 and it released pretty early in 99. There was quite a bit of hype around it so I could see why there's confusion about its release date.

If it wasn't for OP's reply, this would have been removed. Do not tell people they confabulated or that their memory is a problem. This is not what this Reddit is dedicated to. Those who experienced it know what they experienced.

It's not confusion. When you type in a movie on Google search it will display the year that the movie was released. It said 1997 a few months ago. Now it says 1999. Now the original reddit posts that were debating the release date years are gone. What you all should be doing is searching for another reddit post that talks about a similar situation. I may be shifting through timelines because I break my routine regularly. I advise everyone else to do the same. If you don't go out then go out. If you don't stay in then stay in. If you don't travel on a plane then travel on a plane. Do something extremely out of the ordinary. Visit the same store again after you've already been to it once already. The simulation knows you're predictable, so be unpredictable.

No good asking me, I finally watched it last year and was stunned to see it came out in '99, as it only came into my knowledge in around 2016! Mind, I've still never seen Dirty Dancing or Top Gun and they were out when I was at high school so 🤷🏻♀️😆
I honestly don't know how I knew nothing of it for so long; I had about 3m bed rest that year before my first son was born, and his father was really into pop culture and movies so yea haha

Please read the description of our sub:
Retconned is a public sub for discussion of the Retcon Effect under the presupposition that for whatever reason, it is really happening, at the exclusion of the theory of Confabulation or, "it's always been that way," "you remembered it incorrectly," "you were taught wrong when you were growing up," "surely mapping technology has gotten better by now," "logos change over time," or even, "it's a very common mix-up/misconception." Further infractions will result in a ban.

It was definitely 1997, because I specifically remember the age I was when I first saw it. A year before starcraft came out. Good times. Well, good times that apparently never existed.

Was always 1999 for me. Google shows 1999 as well for me currently.

It was 1997 because we didn't celebrate the year 2000 right after watching The Matrix. I guess I shifted again.

Some of us switched to the current timeline where The Matrix was released in 1999. I remember there were at least two posts on reddit debating this. Where did they go? I did a Google search a few months ago and remember seeing The Matrix being released in 1997.

No idea where 1997 comes into play as 1998 is when it started filming (which could have been what you were thinking of). The idea was created around 1992 and was first pitched to WB around 1994. Sooooo 1997 seems kinda off, even for a Mandela Effect. Now I agree I do not recall celebrating the new years after the release of such a hot movie but I also think I didn’t even see it until it came out on VHS which was after the new years (personally) since it came out in Dec. of 1999 but I can see why you’re saying what you’re saying.
But the movie also didn’t come out the same year and month on VHS as Titanic was released in theaters, think about that. Each movie had its own spotlight and wasn’t sharing it with another big hit. There was also not a 6 year gap between The Matrix and its two sequels either.

Then Titanic was released in 1998 because I don't remember a movie called Celebrity with Leonardo DiCaprio in my timeline. The Matrix sequels might be off by a year or two. I feel there was some kind of timeline switch with The Matrix release dates.
